Avatars as "rewards" to longtime members?

I know that mods and reviewers have avatars, but what about allowing members above a certain level (say Platinum) to have avatars as well?

Will this not simply encourage more padding?

Maybe we could go by reg date? If you registered ____ months/years before today, you get to have an avatar. The members that have come and gone won't care and won't upload one, and the ones that are still around will get to have their fun.

I was going to say it, but I thought it was too easy of a target.

I hate AVATARS! If they were used properly they might be okay, but any time you allow them they will become an annoying nuisance because there are a lot of morans in this world. We better at least have the option of hiding them if they become widespread.

Ugh. No avatars please.

That is both fair and balanced....as long as it's based solely on reg date and not the number of posts.

Quality over quantity.

I have no problems with avatars as long as they're tiny

I'm all for this -- sounds like a great idea to me. How about the year 2000? A nice round year and its members are now 5 years old at DVDTalk - another round number.

That has been quite a problem in this forum.
