Avatars as "rewards" to longtime members?

I like the "registered before" idea.... it could be a rolling 24 months or whatever.
I like avatars because they are a visual cue to who authored a post. And they usually take up less space than sigs because they appear in the whitespace below the member name on the lefthand side.

Not sure if I mentioned this earlier but why not just allow "hotlinking" of avatar images. For example, I would be linking to a graphic from my own website, and DVD Talk wouldn't be charged for the bandwidth--I would. So, if avatars would be allowed, members could only have one if they had a place to host their image.
