a 300 character limits on sigs?

talk about pain when trying to put links in sigs, I can understand a limit say 500 but 300 is too small, IMO

The forum rule is five lines. I suppose that's based on a browser width of 800 pixels. Not sure how that jives with the new character count limit.

"There's also a five line limit on signatures. That includes empty lines. It's also based on a maximized browser window at 1024x768 screen resolution, with no child windows (like search or bookmarks) open."

Is there any way this can be increased? Just linking to a couple of URLs (especially DVD Talk threads) is a real pain in the ass with only 300 characters.

I asked the DVD Talk tech god if he could open a socket to fix this glitch [and another one limiting poll options to 100 characters], but it might not be possible?

He gave me a tip for shortening the urls [http://tinyurl.com/], but I haven't gotten around to trying it..

I was going to suggest www.tinyurl.com myself. Perfect for long links.

Example: http://tinyurl.com/54c9b

However that signature looks like it's over 5 lines.

300 is to small I had to remove the names of my tests and put in the numbers. Oh well there are worse things that can happen to me in life.

It's interesting that some sigs are well over this imagined 300 limit. Does this limit actually exist, or is it a number someone conjured up because their sig wouldn't work?

I recently tried to post a quote and was told (in two different ways) I need at least 3 characters.

Let's count, shall we: [ (1) Q (2) U (3) O (4) T (5) E (6)...

I'm guessing the sigs longer than 300 characters were grandfathered in before the software upgrade.

Yeah, that's really annoying too. When I want to quote someone else's response from one thread as a response to something else in another thread, I have to type some nonsense to get over the 3-character minimum.

And the 300 limit has to do with updating sigs, not retrieving them. Also, the limit is on the web scripts not the database, so old sigs are still stored and displayed.

Yeah, I thought of the concept of old vs new (post v3) sigs. But it seems to me that El’s sig has changed since v3? Of course, I could be wrong, and frequently am.

But the quote problem is obviously a bug, yes?

It shouldn't bet too hard to filter out url's when tabulating a proposed sig's character length. That way you can still have your five line max while being able to include links. Don't believe me? Then wh

Any news on this? I got no complaints about the 5 line rule, but, like people said, with links, it's very easy to go over 300 chars. and still be less than 5 lines.

This blows goats.

I just checked my little sig, and it's 297 characters (including spaces). If I take out the formatting, it's 70 fewer.

talemyn's comes in 7 short of the limit, not counting formatting.

Rogue588 is over by at least 2 just with the quote, never mind all the links.

We'll be reading about Dragon*Con 2004 well into the next decade.

And the question will be "Who the hell is Shaq?"

Goats never had it so good.

The way vBulletin determines length says your signature is 225 characters. (That's also why data in the QUOTE tag isn't taken into account when tabulating length.)

Even with the tinyurl links, my sig would go over 300 chars. if I tried to add in a link to just one of my online DVD collections (I used to have 3 links, plus another quote, in my sig . . . still under 5 lines . . . but couldn't fit them in any more when I updated my sig a little ways back).

I don't understand the 300 character limit on signatures. Five lines, sure, I can see that... even if some of our more, ahem, august members seem to use more lines than that...

But 300 characters? The other day I had a great quote I wanted to use... it was more than 300 characters. I took out 2 sentences and completely bastardized the humor of the thing...still longer than 300 characters.

I mean, this isn't about server space... this entire forum is stored in a database, and virtually every comment here is more than 300 characters. I cannot believe that adding in an extra 200-700 characters to the limit would really affect bandwith or server response time.

And there's gotta be a single switch setting in vBulletin to bump this limit up. Or a very simple patch. Can someone explain why the sig limit is so low?
