a 300 character limits on sigs?

we keep them small so they don't take up alot of space (on screen)..I think that's the reason..just so it takes up less space..I don't think server space even comes into play..

THIS SIGNATURE FITS THE 300 CHARACTER SIGNATURE LIMIT AND TAKES UP MORE THAN 5 LINES. IT IS APPALLINGLY UGLY. AS YOU CAN SEE, A LIMITED NUMBER OF CHARACTERS DOES NOT MEAN A LIMITED AMOUNT OF SPACE.
Meanwhile, the following quote should be fine and take up considerably less space, even if it does take up more than 300 characters:
Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones. So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious: if it were so, it was a grievous fault. And grievously hath Caesar answer'd it.
Not asking much... maybe 500 characters? What do you think?

if it's huge we'll remove it and tell them to use a smaller font ..if we see a huge signature, or someone reports one, we fix it. personally I don't care, I don't have one
I think they're pointless, but everyone is not the same. I have changed your signature so you should be happy now. Maybe Geoff can increase it but it's really not my call.
your previous signature was
-
REALaly?! S om any people donut like to hear about other people's dreams? I loe ve ot to. because it is so frackin' insane usually and doesnt mke any sense! -- muggins
-
I think because I changed it manually, you'll need to have an admin change it for you if you are to ever want it changed because it's over the character limit..

Pilot, thank you. I did not actually want the quote from Julius Caesar as my sig line... I was just providing that as an example.
(I was actually looking to add in a quote from The Sports Guy on ESPN.com... but thank you for thinking I am far more cultured and intelligent than I am.)
Since you quoted my original sig... I'll change it back after a while. Right now, I'd like to leave the Julius Caesar quote up, just to give this thread some context.
And pilot... all of this begs the original question. It is obviously impractical to write an admin every time you want a longer sig line. In the old system, we were allowed more than 300 characters, and we just set and enforced a 5-line policy. Why can't we do that here?

Count me in for an increase in the sig length. Several times I have wanted to use a long quote in my sig, but it exceeded the 300 limit, even though it would have been less than five lines.
It's ridiculous to have BOTH a five line limit and a max character limit. The five line limit will determine the character length on its own.

With 300 character and 5 line limit, that means each line can have maximum of 60 characters only. That doesn't seem to be a lot of characters to play with once we start adding in URLs.

Once again, I found a signature that I want to use... but damned if it's not more than 300 characters! Please, please, please, can we at least get this bumped up to at least 500 characters, if not 1000?

I ran into this the other day. The quote would have taken up maybe three lines of regular text, less as size=1 like I had it. But I couldn't use it because it was well beyond the 300 character limit and there was no way to shorten it without losing the meaning.

Never understood the point/reason. You can add anything you want to your posts and make it look like a sig. Why bother repeating it over and over (for frequent posters)?

Well, see, here's the thing. While I do agree with you about repeating a sig over and over and over and over again in the same thread, I guess it would be up to that individual poster to uncheck the "Show your signature" box before hitting the "Post Reply" button.
As for those who might not like sigs, avatars, etc..if you don't want to be annoyed by them, go to your User CP and then click Edit Options. Scroll down to Thread Display Options. Once there, in the Visible Post Elements subsection, uncheck the Show Signatures, Show Avatars & [if you want to go for the trifecta] Show Images.
That way those who want the sigs/avatars can have 'em and those who don't, won't be annoyed by 'em. But to sit there and complain about them because you either don't know how to do the above, didn't know you could do that or are too lazy to do it, is ridiculous.
Of course, Geoff has the final say..

I just posted to try and see why people actually want them? I don't see the point.

Okay . . . breaking out the shovel to dig this thread back up.
I just went to change my sig and ran into the enigmatic "no more than 300 characters" rule again. Remembering this thread, I decided that I'd check it out to see what the eventual explaination and/or resolution was, only to find that, after 7 months, there still wasn't one of either.
Any updates?

I would imagine that the major issue in our forum slowdown is either database access (which really is more a function of bringing up a thread or doing a search -- once a record is tagged, the load difference between 300 characters and 3000 characters in a field is pretty minimal) or web server access (which again has no corrolation to this issue.)
Frankly, I do not understand why we cannot get a definitive answer on this. Pilot, you've been great, and I appreciate your honesty, but the gist of your answers all seem to be, "well, I don't really know why it's set at that limit." In theory, Geoff and the admins should at least be able to justify this rule... or amend it or abolish it completely.
