Locked threads without an explanation?

I just had a thread closed and locked, and the moderator didn't say why? Can I get an explanation?

Since you've been a member for a while you must have read the rules of the forum. We are not allowed to speak about or ask about banned members.

Actually, that wasn't a rule I knew. I wasn't even sure that he had been banned anyway.

Regardless, it would be nice if that was said in thread as it was locked.

Actually, now that I read the rules, I still don't see that one.

Sorry about that, might be an unwritten rule.

While part of me understands the reasoning behind this, another part wonders if maybe understanding why some people are banned would help other people in knowing what is and is not acceptable and therefore prevent more people from being banned.

That was a long sentence.

Also, if this is going to be enforced, perhaps it should be made an "official" rule.

The logic behind this (and it makes sense) is that it isn't fair to discuss/make fun of members who are not here to defend themselves.

DVDTalk does not ban members quickly or for trivial reasons. Usually you are either doing a very obvious bad thing (multiple accounts, spamming, etc.) or you have been given several warnings about your behavior. There's really no need to 'educate' people about why members have been banned. Don't break the rules, listen to warnings, and you should be golden.

That is one of the two biggest reasons. The other is that it encourages banned members to come back to defend themselves or just cause trouble as has already occurred in this thread.

Just do a search under the user's name and you should find an answer after reading some threads.
