Premium Membership - A NO GO

Well it looks like even if we were to upgrade to VB 3 we'd have an insurmountable issue to getting a premium membership. Basically I'm told that Paypal will immediately close any account of any company which uses Paypal to collect monies for any adult related content.

Even though a DVD Talk Premium membership would have absolutely POSITIVELY NOTHING to do with adult content we could still have our account closed beausethere are adult reviews on the site.

So unless we can find an alternative to paypal, the Premium Membership is DOA!

You need an agent. Someone that collects paypal payments as a fee for joining some dumb club named ClubDT and delivers you the database of user names.

That person would then "advertise" on your site and the fee would be the net revenue.

You just happen to have a relationship with the agent where you extend membership rights to his club members as a token of gratitude for his spending those advertising dollars on your site.

It could work damn it!

Paypal shouldn't be the only way to collect money. There are lots of payment services.

Here's Paypals policy on adult content, there seems to be some wiggle room. I'd email them and see what they say, the Adult reviews are a very small part of DVD Talk and they might not see it as a violation.

This is the part that I question:
"Small and insignificant parts of a catalog, book, periodical, or other work which is not, as a whole, primarily devoted to sexual matters."

vBulletin supports payment through NoChex, WorldPay, and Authorize.net in addition to PayPal.

We'll see. We got an email from them informing us that our account was frozen, which is insane. I called them right away and sat on hold for over an hour (in between talking to 5-6 people there). But it seems that there's NO wiggle room on their end...Which is INSANE as we've used paypal on this site for over 3 years!

I'll be looking into other options, but of course it just makes it all so much more complicated.

Lot's of horror stories of paypal freezing funds, I think it's been mentioned in Other.

Can't we just send you personal checks/money orders? Starbucks gift cards?

Dude, are you trying to get banned?

I think RandyC's idea could work.

I will donate $5 via Paypal for a signed nude photo of one of the moderators. Any of them will do.

I think so too. Geoff, let me know if you need help. I don't know how separate you want that agent to be.

Yeah, eBay owns it now though...and eBay doesn't allow any adult material to be auctioned off.

Geoff,

Have you considered setting up a merchant account and accepting credit card payments directly? My friend did it for his small business and he said it was surprisingly easy. It would require some web development for the secure pages and whatnot, but I'm pretty sure there's lots of free php/mysql solutions available for that.

Also, I can pay by escrow, but I am in Romania. Is this posing a problem?

Geoff, are you a Costco member? They use Nova. Not a big deal at all to set it up.

Geoff, do you like gladiator movies?

I am not sure why but it seems like this post and any answer should go in a Private forum

Geoff, you ever seen a grown man naked?

FirePay is pretty decent. Not great, but decent. Stay away from FirstData, they are very good but not the most internet friendly.
