All right, I've found the solution to the problem. It's essentially what I proposed earlier in the thread, but this time, it eliminates the auto-select JavaScript from the bottom forum-generated menu, so you are forced to click the "Go" button to make your selection work. So now there is no way to "accidentally" go to the Mature forum.

I've created a working mock-up of my proposal here, based on the Feedback Forum:

http://www.aloha.com/~tabanger/dvdtalk/feedback.html

If you play around with it, you'll notice that it's a deliberate 2-step process to get to the Mature forum. No slip-ups.

For those who are complaining, you won't have any more mousing accidents. For Mature Forum visitors, you have one extra, minor step to get there. If you use the top drop-down menu, you have to click the Enter link. If you use the bottom drop-down menu, you have to click the "Go" button to get to the forum.

What do you think? Is this an acceptable solution for everyone?

I haven't really followed this discussion, but thanks for isolating the Adult Talk quick-link a bit in the top menu.

The downside is, I think Geoff wants to remove barriers to people going to revenue generating areas (understandably) and not add barriers.

It's really no different than bars having bouncers check IDs at the door. Bars still do pretty well financially.

It's different on the web, though, where every incremental step causes readership to plunge.

Thank El Scortcho. His comments at the Portland Otter Meet prompted me to address the issue this way

The only way to stimulate change in the forum is to corner Geoff in person and intimidate the shit out of him.

I can't imagine moving the link slightly in one drop down list will cause people to stop reading it.

If anyone's that lazy they should shoot themselves and put themselves out of there misery.

I was speaking more in general. I didn't know moving the link slightly in the bottom dropdown was even a topic of discussion anymore.

It was the topic of discussin as Geoff did indeed move it down a little in the top drop down, by putting a ------ in between it and sports.

I think the initial thrust (excuse the pun) was to have it REMOVED from the list.

El Scorcho basically asked if I could move it down... Which when looking at it made a lot of sense.

Works great for me. Really my only complaint (although I never complained about it) was that the freewheel on my mouse would scroll a tick past what I wanted, and I'd have all kinds of nauty on my screen at work when I just wanted Sports or Other. Just adding a small buffer solves that problem nicely. No need to go overboard.

Well, removing it would be best, as it would eliminate the scroll wheel accidental clicks, but this is a suitable middle ground, as at least I won't smack it accidently when trying to click on sports anymore.

I agree, I understand not removing it. Can you fix the one at the bottom too?

The one up top is created by hand and is easily modified. The one at the bottom is generated by vBulletin, and repositioning it would likely either entail moving the subforum to a different forum or recoding the software, neither of which are likely to happen.

Hey, guess what I had to ALT-F4? If we could do this on the top bar too, that would be great.

CTRL+W would probably be faster, and it was the bar on the top that was changed.
