BS spam popups

Do we really need popup ads that proclaim: Congrats! You've Won! Claim Your Prize!

Isn't this the worst type of email-grabbing spam generator possible? Ads for products are one thing....

From: Bartertown due to it having a better economy than where I really live.
I'm not sure if the ads I've gotten like that were from here or not but if they were dvdtalk generated I agree that they need to go.
I understand this site is expensive to run and I thank the owners for letting us use it for free, but please stick to legitmate ads from retailers or ads for new dvds or cds or other products

Peep, have you cleansed your computer of spyware recently? If not, I suggest using Spybot, found at http://security.kolla.de/.

As mentioned before:

- We don't generally have pop-ups we have pop-unders a much less envasive form of advertising
- We've got an ad network who serves some of the ads in the forum, so sometime we don't know what ads are in the queue to be serverd
- We are planning a subscription option in the next 6 months which will enable you to surf the site AD FREE for an annual fee.

Is there much difference between spybot and adaware?

I downloaded adaware a few months ago and love it, I have never used spybot.

Oops. I meant to say that it was a pop-under, although I'm not really sure why one would be considered "less envasive" then the other. And it's not the fact that advertising exists that bothers me, just the nature of ads like this one that don't actually advertise a product but merely invite spam.

They are similar programs. I like the interface of spybot better. Plus, some of the reviews I've read has said it's a little better at catching things.

It is the worst type only if you are naive enough to think you actually won and try and claim a prize.

Static - thanks for that link! I've cleaned up my home computer, and I had not idea there was so much STUFF on it.

Thanks for the tip. I installed it last night and was amazed at the crap that it cleaned off of my system.

FWIW, The new Google Toolbar 2.0 blocks popups pretty well, if you happen to be using IE. It also has a lot of other handy bits.

No offense, but that's the silliest, most unenforceable thing I've ever read. What about people who read this forum at work, where PC's may be forced to run ad-blocking software.

How do you see the membership agreement, once you're already a member, because I don't remember that line when I joined a few years back.

Wow. That's an interesting suit. We don't use doubleclick, but I am sure that we'll see a dramatic drop in error message like ads. I'll contact our ad network and make sure they are aware of the suit.

Companies that go to that much trouble probably don't want you visiting non business related sites from work. Geoff has to pay a small portion of the bills somehow.

Possibly. Our company is worried about viruses because lots of sites aren't all that particular about what goes on in their advertisers' popups.
