Anyway, this is new to me, the removing of a forum with no in-forum notice. Will the treads be available anywhere so I can finish reading some that I was following?

Yeah, I miss it too. I'm wondering if I should reply to that "I'm a dork" lone thread?

You can't reply to a thread in a closed forum.

Mods can close an entire forum now? They sure are gaining power. What's next, they can see which users are browsing each forum?

While I think the war forum was an important thing to do, it took a real toll on the moderators whose task it was to keep things in line. Most have expressed a wish to see it folded back into Other and I agree. I'm not really in favor of then creating a politics forum.
Honest question, do you have some sort of an aversion to seeking more moderators? I know that there are dozens of people who are willing and able to do it.

I think that if there is a need for a politics forum (I'm not sure if there is) it's a non-answer to say you won't make it because it is too tolling on current mods. Unless you can't get more mods.

I do think there are probably other reasons you are concerned about making a politics forum, which, I think are more intellectually honest answers to why it won't be folded into a politics forum.

I do think many, many, many members will miss the order that was in Other for the past few weeks. Oh, and good luck to the mods who will have more work in Otter once again.

I'm afraid just adding more moderators to the forum wouldn't have made the job any easier. Closing errant threads or posting an in-thread warning is the easy part of the job.

Much goes on behind the scenes and involves more people than you would think. Adding more moderators would have added to the time it took to reach a consensus on actions and communications. We never felt the need for more help, we just wished for less antagonistic posting.

Short of assigning one moderator per poster and giving them complete and final authority as to actions taken in regard to that poster, I do not believe throwing more moderators at that forum would have helped.

Just make everyone a moderator. It'll be a mad dash to delete each other's posts. We'll wear ourselves out in a week.

If that's the case then I TRULY cannot see any logic behind how the war forum added any extra work to the overall moderators duties.

You point out the options are to either come to a concensus "on actions and communications" or just have each mod make the call. I think that the other option is to just have the three or four mods in each subforum come to a consensus.

Either way, my involvment is sort of moot. I don't think that dvdtalk needs a forum for Politics/Int'l Issues. I was just confused, still am.

You have no idea of the number and type of issues that arose so I understand why you don't know how much extra work was involved. And who needed to be involved.

A single forum with the type of focus it had amplified the tone and frequency of less than polite discourse. Mixing those threads with other threads less prone to those problems tends to dilute some of that out.

I agree, I really don't think there should be a separate forum or subforum for politics. I think people get too personally attached to political beliefs, so that when someone criticizes their belief it feels like a personal attack. It's nice to mix up the threads.

There are others risks, however, when there are politics/war threads in other members leave. The political posters do get passionate and sometimes flood the forum with their political beliefs. Which constrains the amount of advice, fun, recommendation type threads Other is known for. To combat this we ask moderators to try to put the kabosh on the amount of political threads in other.

Either way, it's a very tricky job for you guys.

If you read the War Forum and the type of posts that were being made over and over again, it doesn't take too much imagination to guess what must have been going on behind the scenes (think beyond simple thread-locking). Some of it got so far out of hand that I put three posters whom I would normally consider reasonable individuals on my Ignore List. While I enjoyed the War Forum and would very much like to see a Politics Forum, I can certainly see how mixing it back into Otter has a diluting effect.

I advocated that myself concerning Iraq threads when War got sent back to Other.

So far it hasn't been a problem. But if it becomes one we'll look into it.
