A sign of things to come...

GeoffK 04-20-03 12:32 AM

The War forum has always been a temporary forum. With the main military action now winding up, so will the war forum.

Oh, come on ... the war for hearts and minds will continue for years. ;)

Seriously, I've very much enjoyed the War Forum and will miss it. We've had quite a few interesting and informative debates in there. There's still a lot going on in Iraq worthy of discussion, so I hope it doesn't disappear too quickly.

what I find odd, and forgot to mention originally, was that the war forum is still there but the link isn't
I could understand if the forum had been totally removed

No, actually it makes a lot of sense. This is the first step to making it go away. Leaving it on the front page encourages new people to try it moreso. You and the others who frequent it will still find it with no problem.

Consider this a weening off process.

The Antipodean 04-20-03 12:30 PM

Now the war can return to the Books forum where it really belongs! :D

Why don't we morph War Forum into a Politics Forum? This will satisfy those who are upset about politics polluting the Other Forum.

Because I added the war forum as a temp forum to meet real and immediate needs of the forum, I don't want it to morph into a permanent Politics forum by defualt.

Then how about you create a Politics Forum on its own to meet real and long-term needs of the forum?

it's not gonna be the Rebuilding Of Iraq forum? ;)

Das,

While I think the war forum was an important thing to do, it took a real toll on the moderators whose task it was to keep things in line. Most have expressed a wish to see it folded back into Other and I agree. I'm not really in favor of then creating a politics forum.

To be honest, I didn't think about it from a moderator perspective. I can accept that explanation. I do think the War Forum was a success from a poster's perspective, though, and I would hope we could revisit this subject at a future date when there is more moderator time available. Thanks for the answer.

What's going to happen to all the threads and posts??? I hope they'll be archived, but I guess that could take up too much room. We've had such good times. Now we have to go back to Other where we're looked down upon for posting serious current events or political threads. Don't get me wrong, I knew this day was coming, but damnit, now we have to be funny and carefree again. :(

Nobody can force you to be funny or have a life. Fight the pressure and resist the urge. ;) Plus look on the bright side, the US can always start another war, maybe even on soon. :)

Serious question now, should we limit the number of war and political threads we start in Other once the War forum is gone?

joltaddict 04-21-03 07:59 PM

Can we get the Sports link back on the top of Other now?
Yeah Im a lazy bastard.

Yeah Im a lazy bastard.

Sports has 'graduated' to it's own full blown forum and is no longer a sub forum of other.

-sniff- Thank you Pharoh, that makes me feel better. :)

I don't think we should. We already have the "no more than X amount of threads started by one user on page 1 within a certain amount of time" rule, which I think is enough. What I'd rather see is some moderation of those cute little carefree Otters that skip through the forum all blissfully until they stump their toes on a political thread and then turn into bitter little mutant Otters baring just sprouted fangs and going on a rampage for fun. :)

- I'm just playing here folks. While the kernal of my statement is pretty much what I think, the language is all in fun. Please don't chew me a new one. Thanks! - -biggrin-

Gallant Pig 04-21-03 11:12 PM

I'm going to have that thread where Mutley Hyde thought I was changing his posts archived. Now that was a classic!

Mutley Hyde 04-21-03 11:16 PM

That was classic, I agree. :)

Spoiler:
But then, I think all my posts are classic!
;)

Gallant Pig 04-21-03 11:29 PM

I need more proof.
