I don't love it, I don't hate it. I suppose I would be a lot more hopeful if this were a work-in-progress (or first draft) rather than what I assume is the final product.

I'm definitely not a graphic designer, although I do have some experience in that area. The first thing that jumped out at me is the shading within the letters. Very disruptive to the eye to go from light to dark (in the first "D"), then back to light to dark ("V"), then back to light to dark ("D"). Makes it seem like a random collection of letters than a cohesive statement. It just looks strange.

I also wouldn't mind seeing some sort of an image (DVD or keepcase or something) worked into the logo.

But, it's not terrible and I'm not complaining. Just my two pennies.

Alyoshka 11-19-02 01:48 PM

Right now, I can't stand it, but I suppose before long I'll learn to ignore it.

vaporware 11-19-02 01:50 PM

Another vote for dislike. Too big.

Rogue588 11-19-02 01:56 PM

I think it's GROWING...

GuessWho 11-19-02 02:06 PM

I think it looks like a logo from an early 1980's arcade game

spoon81 11-19-02 02:07 PM

Too cartoony.

Surf Monkey 11-19-02 02:08 PM

I don't like it. The graphic isn't a logo; it's a text treatment and a garish one at that. I really liked the old logo because it was iconic and elegant. This new one looks amateurish. I’m a graphic designer so I’m inclined to be very critical of such things.

A logo should be easy to remember, easy to scale in size (so that it can be used in many different kinds of ways like business cards, web sites etc.) and should sum up what you're about. In other words, think about what your site IS and build based on that. Your logo should instantly put forward the base idea of your site/company. This one satisfies none of the above criteria.

GeoffK 11-19-02 03:04 PM

You can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time

I appreciate your feedback. I am well aware the logo is going to take some getting used to :)

I will be updating cafe press stuff soon with the New Logo

Take your time, I just placed an order for one w/ the old logo ;)

BTW did you see the thing about the contest idea?

Cheddarmuff 11-19-02 03:31 PM

The new logo is definately less subtle than the old one....

I'm sure it will grow on me, everything else does.. ;)

That was suggested before he started this thread. During the time it would take to have a contest, he could get something by certified mail instead of another fax. I think it was wise to change it immediately. It's growing on me.

MJKTool 11-19-02 03:41 PM

It looks fine to me Geoff

cynthia 11-19-02 04:09 PM

The "V" looks like an "M" hiding behind the D's.

I hope you'll reconsider the logo contest, Geoff. You'll get the best work out of that.

Like Surf Monkey pointed out, it's plain text with a few nauseating effects added.

No offense to the creator. I just don't think it's fitting for this forum.

Jlbkwrm 11-19-02 04:20 PM

It'll take some getting used to, I guess.

I do have to say that my first thought was: Good Lord, AOL bought out DVDTalk. But that's just me.

immortal_zeus 11-19-02 05:01 PM

I liked the old logo....and I think this new logo is alright. I'm not very creative, so maybe that's why I don't think it's as hideous as others think.

All things take time to get used to. I'm sure that after time, people won't be as critical of it.

I don't like the new logo.

I will suggest a new one. This one does not infringe with the DVD associations:

Errr...

that looks like [LOGO] VD Talk.

VD Talk?

And I cant find the T-shirts anymore. HELP me.

GeoffK 11-19-02 06:35 PM

As it's been mentioned in this thread earlier we did have a thread dedicated to a new logo (this was some time back), and while it did produce some nice logos none really fit the needs of the site. (this was in relation to the T-shirts)

McHawkson 11-19-02 06:37 PM

How about

You probably find it at bargain stores. :D

LurkerDan 11-19-02 06:46 PM

The new logo is fine. But, there's no reason you shouldn't continue to solicit new designs. Sounds like there's plenty o'people here who'd like to whip something up...

Read the first page of this thread. :)

Just snagged me an old-school DVD Talk t-shirt... it's gonna be OOP soon! ;)

joltaddict 11-19-02 06:55 PM

That just brings me to cafeexpress. And when I search I find a gazillion DVD site stuff but no DVDTalk.

What am I doing wrong?

Chad 11-19-02 06:57 PM

My initial impression was...hmmm, something's missing:

Ok, it's not that bad... :D

joltaddict 11-19-02 06:58 PM

OK for some reason clicking on the link didnt work but typing out the url did.
You believe I do this for a living?

Astro44 11-19-02 07:02 PM

why is the old logo back up???

Astro44 11-19-02 07:02 PM

whoops, never mind, went back to the "new" logo after I posted.

Goldberg74 11-19-02 07:04 PM

Now that I've had some time to think about. I think that this is a real bad move Geoff. If you ever intend to go "bigger' than what you are know (speaking of DVDTalk) I would not flash this thing around on a business card.

Like I mentioned (as did zOOmz and Surf Monkey) give us a crack at it, just don't accept the work of a buddy as something you want to stake the future of this site on...

... by the way, you might want to think about an entire site redesign, you know update the "house." Then maybe you could play with the big boys a little better. DVD Talk has looked the same for the last three years (not that it doesn't work) maybe its time for a facelift...

... my rant is done.

Weird, I had to do the same thing. I just figured it was something on my end.

Rogue588 11-19-02 07:17 PM

I saw Geoff tells the DVD FLLC to kiss his *** and we support his legal fees by buying 'ol school DVD Talk merchandise. :D

Or we can just add Chad's bunny to it. ;)

[I also agree with Goldberg74's rant.]

The Cow 11-19-02 07:22 PM

I agree that it looks a bit cartoony and doesn't really fit the look-and-feel of the site. I will probably grow to ignore it, but it is a bit big and isn't very techy looking...

I can deal with it as a site logo, but I have to with Goldberg74, it's not something I would want on a business card. This site has grown so much, and the new logo, is, well, pretty cheesy.

My 2 pennies.

Carry on.

devilshalo 11-19-02 07:23 PM

this is what i think of when i see the new logo...

http://www.theforumisdown.com/upload...102/dvdowl.jpg

ain't it a h00t?

I agree. DVD Talk is one of the very best sites on the Web, DVD related or otherwise. It deserves a beautiful and functional interface. The current one has served its purpose well, but I think a reskin would work wonders. Also, there are a bunch of very talented designers that bump around the forums every day. Opening up to some sort of design competition would almost certainly yield amazing results. Something to think about.

rkndkn 11-19-02 07:53 PM

Sorry, I don't like it.
