Speaking of bandwidth, do we really need to know who is/isn't online?

Speaking of bandwidth, do we really need to know who is/isn't online?
Just wondering. Seems to me that every time a page is loaded, the system has to run that search (or whatever it does).

We need that. However, we could probably ditch all the text to the right of the user names. Most of it makes little sense anyway, and I'm sure it hogs the bandwidth.
