Sure, there are an infinite number of ways to make the ad go away ...

But it's hardly an effective revenue generator if every user runs advanced ad-blocking all the time.

I turn off my ad-blocker and cookie manager when surfing only DVD Talk to help support, but it's back on now.

I hate it. I came here to comment, and i found this thread.

Luckily, after closing it 5 times, i realized i could just minimize it and it would just sit and taunt me on the task bar - and I can live with that....

I almost brought this up earlier. I didnt because I havent donated anything to the running of this place. But to turn off the ads youre basically taking money out of the sites pocket. Is it that big a deal? You have to turn your wrist a whole two inches or so? Im not saying all us regular posters should mail checks but christ all you have to do is minimize or close them.

Way to pull together as a community.

Like I said, I turned them off for DVD Talk viewing because of this very reason, but there's a point where it's a little past reasonable.

Argghhh, Geoff, make this go away! EVERY page has the popup! It's linked to the banner on each page.

Geoff asked us to use the direct links and I think most of us do (I know I always do). He uses the three dvd ads at the top of every page which I frequently will click on to check release dates on upcoming titles and other information about a disc that I'm interested in, I think that is a good format for having ads on a site like this. What I have a very difficult time with are the 'popunder' and 'popup' ads. First off I find it difficult to believe that the previous ad methods are all of a sudden an ineffective revenue generator. Second I don't see the point of using ads like popups because the vast majority of ppl are either running software to block them, or are making it an explicit point not to click on the ads in order to show their distaste for them. So I guess what I'm getting at is if there really is a need to generate more money to keep the site running, surely there has to be a much better and more effective way of advertising without using a concept that is flawed to begin with; like popups.

Either this site is in dire-straits, or this (the pop-ups) is excessive ...

I really don't see much of a grey area ...

you assume we all have computers that can support pop-up killers. I have a 5 year old pc that can barely run what I already have going. I can't really support another background program....

Unless the ad-blocker sucks, it should read the code that initiates the pop-up and not execute it, meaning the request is never served for the image or whatever trigger gives Geoff revenue. You'd have to be pretty dense to pay someone for an ad that's never shown. I'm sure the advertizers wouldn't be too ready to do business with DVDTalk if they knew everyone was just blocking the ads and considered it a non-issue.

Not exactly. The reason I come here is the number of members. With 28,000 members registered, no matter what kind of arcane question you ask, odds are somebody is going to know the answer. If these pop-ups start driving people away, and discourage new people from joining up, we're going to lose critical mass. Look at the forum at DVDFile. I never go there because the lack of numbers means very few threads that I have an interest in. Here there might be 50 new threads started in a couple of hours. But if enough people leave here, that will only encourage more people to leave, and start a death spiral.

Not going to go into the 5 year old PC thing. That's not an excuse to hate popups (pop-unders)...
