Then don't take it out of context. You, and only you, can define what offends you. If you take other people's completely harmless jokes and look to be offended by them, you're only going to hurt yourself.

In any case, the Third Reich and Nazi Germany were about more than simply hating Jews. To say otherwise is as bad an oversimplification as the recent mythology that the Confederate States were only about enslaving Blacks. The Civil War was not fought to free the slaves, and World War II was not fought to end persecution of the Jews. While horrible events, they are merely pieces to the overall picture.

My point? The Soup Nazi has nothing to do with Jews. It's a joke on the rigorous and unmatched system of order followed by members of the Nazi movement, even to a fault. It's only offensive if you choose to make it such, and while I respect your sensitivity to the tragic events surrounding the Nazi movement, I think it's unfair to expect the rest of us to find offense where none is intended.

Soup...I appreciate the fact that you replied to my comment in the spirit in which it was intended. And I do maintain, that I like reading your posts. In fact, you've been answered a number of my questions a number of times.

I respectfully maintain, that out of context, the name does cause me to kringe. I know from your posts that you're a person of intelligence and compassion (everyone jokes aside. (I would like to re-iterate that I don't think you use of the name in any manner condones this.)

However, the Nazis did kill millions of people of all kinds and I find it painful to be reminded of it everytime I read a post.

And the "Soup Nazi" only denied soup...

Aren't you getting a bit too much PC overboard on this one?

Cow...No, I don't think it's about what is PC. I stated that the Soup Nazi is very funny in the context of Seinfeld. However, out of context and in variations like "Sherlock Nazi" it's not funny.

das..The use of the name in this forum is by very definition out of context. And for the record, I never specificially mentioned Jews in the list of people that the Nazis killed. The Nazis killed many, many different groups.

Apologies. You are correct - you most certainly did not. I disagree that the use of the name is out of context. The context is the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld.

Let's be careful, though. The Nazis are far from alone in the senseless murder department. I doubt any of the nations represented on this forum are above criticism for past wrongs against the innocent. If we hide from our history, not only will we have nothing left, we'll be doomed to repeat it.

Again, I sympathize with your feelings, but I think you're only hurting yourself to draw such negative emotion from such an innocent name. The Nazis, once they began blindly following insane leadership, did many horrible things to many people. The Soup Nazi, however, was just an a-hole to some New Yorkers who couldn't follow his rules.

I guess I have to chime in here too.

Say what you may about his name, but you are way out of line calling Soup Nazi "smart, informed, helpful, interesting, polite and a welcome contributor to the forum".
You know I had the same thought when reading his post.

I don't think he's suggesting Scott advocates Nazism. He went out of his way to laud Soupy (too far, if you ask me). The issue is that he feels the name is insensitive because it trivializes Nazism and does not afford it with the negativity he believesis appropriate.

And Scott's no anti-semite, period. But on the larger issue, I've seen my share of people who harbor anti-semetic feelings and have Jewish friends. -- "Some of my best friends are ______" is a common comment people use, often as a weak defense.

On another forum I read, a member registered the username "Jewkiller". This was about the same time the suicide bombings started in Israel. Needless to say, he didn't last very long.

I don't see anything wrong with the Soup Nazi handle. It's a very well known skit from a popular TV show.

I am so blessed to have lived this long and never to have seen an episode of Seinfeld. Given that, his user name is his user name. If it was not his intention to be seen in any manner that was harmful, then he should keep it.

Seeing as how Geoff, the owner of the site, has put in his two cents, and there has been no other objections to his name, let's table this until such time that we're made aware that it's likely his user name could be misinterpreted.

Closing thread.
