Unwelcome Member Name

You've probably gotten this before but I strongly object to the name Soup Nazi. Mind you, I find the person who writes under the name to be smart, informed, helpful, interesting, polite and a welcome contributor to the forum.

However, the name Soup Nazi has always been offensive to me. Yes, I know he's referring to a character from Seinfeld. And in the context of Seinfeld it's very, very funny. However, out of context and in it's various variations its hurtful.

In one thread Soup Nazi jokingly refered to himself as Sherlock Nazi. I know it's a variation on the original joke but it still keeps the Nazi motif.

I don't have to remind you what the Nazis did to millions of people. The use of Soup Nazi and it's variations in the context of a website like this is very unpleasant and offensive.

-rolleyes-

That's the most ridiculous, load of PC crap I've ever heard.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Kube, I'm sorry that my alias, if you will, is offensive to you. I thought long and hard about a user name that would appeal not only to the masses, but my personality as well. I thought if it was good enough for Hollywood, it would be good enough for a message board ...

Are you sure that you have the right person?

While i respect your opinion, i disagree. I think the name is comical, and harbors no offensive undertones.

Its a catch-phrase, a character name, an icon of sorts... How can something that completely exsists in two words be taken out of context? ... I mean i can understand if his name was flat out "NAZI" ... That would be out of context and inappropriate. But "Soup Nazi" doesn't mean anything close to "nazi" ... two different ends of the spectrum if you ask me. Which you didn't. :)

shaun3000 06-11-02 12:22 AM

In my oh-so-valid opinion, he's been here longer and has far more posts. Beings that he is by FAR the more active of the two members AND your reason for thinking it is offensive, Soup Nazi gets to keep his name.

--------

OT: I hate the fact that staring at any particular word for too long makes said word appear misspelled. I had to spell check opinion. Oi...

If you're going to go into longevity arguments, I personally think it's more salient to point out that he's made over 14,000 posts and no one (that I can recall) has ever expressed a problem with his name before this.

And just to be clear, it is not, and never will be, an issue of who's been here longer.

Well, you've been here longer than any of us. So i guess you're right.

I wish more members thought like you do. I'd have to type a lot less.

;)

I guess I have to chime in here too.

Say what you may about his name, but you are way out of line calling Soup Nazi "smart, informed, helpful, interesting, polite and a welcome contributor to the forum". :D

No - I'm right. I'm always right. My seniority reigns supreme!

I've objected to his name for months, but only now have the courage to speak out about it. I don't like soup. I never eat it, and I find the texture to be displeasing. I'd prefer that he call himself Pizza Nazi, or Beer Nazi.

Seriously, though, I don't think there are many people on this forum who are not familiar, at least in passing, with the Seinfeld character after which Soup named himself. Since the context of his name is popular American culture, it is hard to take his name out of context. Couple that with the fact that he has never, in my experience, advocated any fascist principles and I can't see how his name would be inappropriate.

Aghama 06-11-02 08:57 AM

You don't by any chance run a soup shop in NY?

So I guess changing my name to Stew Stormtrooper is out.

Groucho 06-11-02 09:56 AM

While we're here I would like to ban the username "Kube." It takes the word Cube, and replaces the first letter with K. "K Cubed" in other words "K^3" in other words "KKK". Offensive!

GeoffK 06-11-02 10:38 AM

I appreciate the fact you've expressed your feelings over the name. The first time I saw it posted I had a simular reaction, but I think there's something to be said for not being too PC. The name is a character from a well known show and so while it wouldn't be my first choice, I do think it's within the bounds.

Deftones 06-11-02 10:48 AM

I object to you people calling this guy smart! :p

I say we get rid of all "handles" ... but then I guess that'd make me, um, a dirty, dirty nazi.

Seinfeld is on DVD? Or are you referring to something else?

Heat 06-11-02 12:44 PM

Here is some Seinfeld trivia (from imdb):

The "Soup Nazi" is based on the actual owner of a take-out soup business in Manhattan on W. 55th St, between Broadway and 8th Ave.

In the very first episode, the first conversation was between George and Jerry about a button. In the very last episode, when they were sitting in jail, the last conversation they had was the same thing about the button.

There is a Superman somewhere in every episode.
