Has this place 'lost its edge' ?

I mean... even Bando's starting to look edgy... this place is looking pretty bleek. All the music, book, sports, and sex freaks have thier own places now... what's left?

:shakes head:

Don't give me that ebb/flow crap either.

When did this place have edge? It's a bunch of overeducated, undersexed, right-leaning white guys posting on the net.*

It lost its edge when everyone followed their remarks with disclaimers meant to assuage those that were called out for what they were.*

*This remark has only been meant to offend those that read it.

Yeah, KS yer right. I poked fun @ that fat tub 'o goo Ebert falling down & said "insert fat joke here"; the PCPD blew me off the map. Slapstick don't cary water in this joint?!
So add chubby chasers to the aforementioned "bunch of overeducated, undersexed, right-leaning white guys posting on the net.*"

Question is can a place that resembles a high school have an edge.
Popular kids, jocks, nerds, bullies & the "not- pictured-here" just to name a few.
I guess to have "edge" you have to be a GED kid, and that's kinda sad.

Well the "edge" was in that it was a sort of flea market, it had everything for everyone. a little news here, a little sports talk there, some sex and (mature) topics spread out. between those there was humor. Now with everything in there own little place, the gathering is less since everyone who was posting something is in there own section now. so the "meeting of minds" has pretty much slowed down. not to say that the seperation was a bad thing. but now people have the place they like to go first and foremost, and this place becomes more of a area of just really really randomness since all the regular randomness is in its own section.

It does seem a little different with the sports and mature threads out. The Other Forum is still a great hangout, though.

WARNING: Suckekeke simile ahead

Before the fracturing, The Other was like a Sears... you could wander around and find almost anything here. Now, it's feeling more like a strip mall, not that it's a bad thing. It's just... different.
Here's hoping the strip won't open a "photo-mart".

Yes, Other is big time lame now.

The topics are still here, that hasn't changed, but a lot of the great personalities that made Other so fun are now spending their time in Sports & Mature.

Topics didn't make Other, Personalities made Other.

</small>Over the past year or so I seem to recall a number of people - fairly regular posters IIRC - explaining that they didn't like posting/reading in Other so much any more because of the atmosphere. Perhaps they'll return. Cometh the hour; cometh the (wo)man.... etc.

Not to knock the comments made by those expressing this viewpoint, there seems to be a kind of paradox inherent in taking the time and trouble to enter a "room" just to comment that the place is not so good any more - and there are better places to be. Anyways, I thought there was a separate forum dedicated to that

Not it's edge, but it's definately slowed down considerably. Threads are staying on page 1 forever, and the traffic has slowed to a crawl..but I guess that's what they wanted.

The personalities have all split up, and now...we are left with the shell of what it used to be.

Whoah, that's the first time anyone has ever called me an overeducated, undersexed, right-leaning white guy!

What's the world coming to?

Other hasn't interested me for some time, but the forums I read and post in regularly (Video Game Talk, Movie Talk, DVD Talk and Music Talk) are better than ever, and Sports Talk was a welcome addition.

At any rate, as long as the DVD and home theater/entertainment related forums are flourishing, the site is in great shape IMO. Afterall, this is DVD Talk, not some random general topic chat site.

There was a reason I caveated it, no?

I was speaking on average, and no one has ever claimed you're average.

Josh,

Geoff never meant for this place to "just" be about DVDs and home theater. He was hoping to create a community of members who helped each other out. Other is the "funhouse" part of that equation. The community playground, if you will. It obviously doesn't appeal to, nor entertain everyone, but there's no need to talk about it like it's the bastard child of the family every time you mention it. That just antagonizes the other members who enjoy the opportunity to get to know each other outside of our movie and HT likes and dislikes.

Really, enough already.
