I just got a Mindwave Research popup in the Other Forum -- it stemmed from a EarthShare banner, put forth by the Ad Council.

SUPERSTITIAL(tm) format is a standard in online advertising created by Unicast - a non banner, interactive advertising solutions and services company for the Internet.

SUPERSTITIALs are highly interactive, non-banner ads that can be any size on the computer screen and up to 100K in file size, featuring full animation, sound and graphics capable of effectively conveying integrated advertising while protecting a Web site's performance.

Pre-loaded using a patent-pending "polite" delivery system that minimizes the latency problems often experienced with streaming online advertising solutions, SUPERSTITIAL ads play only upon a user-initiated break in surfing, such as a mouse click. SUPERSTITIALs can be used to achieve multiple advertising goals, including branding, direct marketing, commerce and entertainment. SUPERSTITIAL ads play only once fully loaded, ensuring that every user gets a consistent and complete brand message and that each advertiser pays only for guaranteed impressions.

Additionally, because SUPERSTITIAL ad units exist outside the banner space, they can create an entirely new revenue stream for Web publishers.

There is no free lunch. They still slow down overall page loading and navigation by clogging up the browser's cache affecting response on all pages, they eat up bandwidth for everyone whether they're viewed or not, and they still suck.

For the record I think 'SUPERSTITIALs' suck as well. I am not happy that DoubleClick is serving them even though I told them they should not!

Looks like this is now resolved.

Their reply:

We had an issue where two superstitials were targeted incorrectly, and
delivered to a couple of sites that do not accept popups/popunders. We have
since corrected the problem and you shouldn't be seeing the ads anymore. If
you do get another issue such as this, please send us a screenshot with a
mouseover on the 468x60 banner, since it will make it easier to track the
banner/popup down. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks

Well, even if they were uncalled for I trust that financial restitution will be made to the site owner: why should they get free ads just because of a "mistake"....?

Well, that's fair. As long as they understand my way of self expression is to NEVER buy from them or anyone with pop up ads.

I just treat them as a badger bashing game.
