I think this looks too slapped together:

I kinda like this, but it reminds me of a logo I've seen, I think for a company called Disc masters or something...

This is nice text layout, but totally anonymous looking:

It's tough business designing a logo, especially when 20,000 voices are part of the process. I do kinda think it should be more horizontal than vertical or circular, since it has to layout nicely on this page. Hmmmm...

Here's an idea. If we get to the point where 6 or so are heading in the right direction Geoff can put a poll up on the front page and in a sticky post. It would be a good way to get a kick in the pants and to give people a feeling that they are really at a democratic web-site. And it certainly doesn't need to be binding.

Hey, and someone's gotta go in and knock down some of those image sizes. Dial up is choking trying to load 300k plus size graphics!

I don't know, I wouldn't exactly call McDonald's, or Pepsi's, or Saturn's, or Cingular's, logos exactly sterling specimens of labored design, either.

Seriously--and this was my concern regarding the "Van Halen" logo--the current fashion in logos does seem to favor a rather minimalist approach--simple, symbolic, graphically communicating the essence of whatever it represents (in other words, you probably won't be seeing the Proctor & Gamble style coming back anytime soon ).

Of course, all of this means less than nothing if the boss doesn't like your little third-string Rembrandt.

*Addendum: BTW, I agree that we should, at least, render all large-size images (400x200+) in thumbnail, as a mercy to our dial-up users.

again like the concept but not the type for the DVD.

Compare the look to the real DVD Logo inserted into the design.

Geoff replaced the "DVD" in your latest logo with the letters from the ACTUAL DVD logo and, essentially, said your new "DVD" looks too much like the lettering in the actual DVD logo. I believe that's what he's trying to get away from to avoid legal issues, etc.

In think he wants the V more U shaped?

Sorry...

Perhaps we need to define this basic point. Geoff, you mentioned earlier that you wanted to move away from the official DVD font, right?

Maybe we should define first what font works for"DVD"?

I whipped these up so that Geoff could take the inevitable Procter and Gamble licensing issues into account when deciding on a logo.

Christmas is almost here again. My last year's Christmas wish was a DVD Talk T-Shirt.
