Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 21: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Here's the theatrical, VOD, streaming and physical media titles for the Theatrical / VOD / Virtual Cinema Showing subset/theme thread. As always, the sources used are both UpcomingHorrorMovies and the IMDB since the latter usually has a few the former doesn't. UHM mentioned earlier this month about moving to another server and an overhaul of the site resulting in less updates, so let me know if anything is missing.

I notice dates for theme nights/subset say not locked down. Is that still accurate?

I like that item as standalone even if it is a little limited.

(Also, while I admire Undeadcow's attempt to encourage conversation with the 'watch and comment' bit, I am humbly requesting that you NOT to make the commenting a requirement.)

I agree with Undeadcow's suggestion. It solves rbrown498's objection and we have had the OHMC Favorites for a few years now and it could use a refresh.

I also agree with Alyxstarr's suggestion to not require a comment. If we attempt to comment on all subset movies alone that could take away from our time to watch movies, so it would be easier if we don't add another one.

Unfortunately it is. Working on it, though. I will say the current dates in red on the theme list are pretty much set in stone.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 21: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Some dates to consider:

OHMC Guide to Screenwriting - Roadmaps first annual Post-Austin Film Festival Screenwriting Reteart starts on October 26th in New Braunfels, TX.
OHMC Guide to Visual Effects Artists - The VIEW conference in Italy for computer effects, interactive techniques and visual effects starts on October 12th.
R.I.P. David Lynch - Criterion Collection is set to release a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me on October 7th
All the Colors of Giatllo - The crowdfunding campaign for Lies by Omission, the giallo inspired role playing game, is set to launch on October 14th.
Terrifier 3 is set to release in theaters on October 11th.
Passport: Australia (or it was a Dark and Stormy Night) - the Dark Night Film Festival begins in Sydney on October 9th

These are extremely hard. I can't imagine how you have done this in past years. I'll try to research more later today or tomorrow.

Hey that gives me a good place to start. I always like to plan at least 1 movie in each of the days to coincide with theme and/or subset. And to not accidentally burn the only thing I have on the ‘to watch’ shelves that may be a theme match. (That’s less of a problem lately as the ‘to watch’ shelves are out of control now around 1000+ with nearly half of that being horror)

The other 70-ish items I just go with how I am feeling.

A few more dates to consdier:

Textploitation Terrors Triple Feature: Volume II - The Definitive Guide to Horror Movies is being released on Kindle on October 2, 2025.
Religious Fanatacism - Suspiria was shown at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival on Oct. 4, 2018 in Spain or the movie Priest was released on 10/12/18 in the USA
Zombie - Alone, a film about a man surviving the zombie apocalypse, premiered on Oct. 16, 2020 in the USA

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 21: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

October 4 - either Religious or TSZDT - The Exorcist was re-released to theaters for its 50th anniversary on 10/4/2023. [Applicable to TSZDT because The Exorcist has held the #1 spot for most of the editions.]
October 12 - Supernatural (Insidious) - Lin Shaye was born on 10/12/1943.
October 13 - Chrono (Phantom) - Kino Lorber released their blu-ray of PotO on 10/13/2015.
October 28 - Dark and Stormy (Felidae) - International Animation Day is 10/28.

Also, I was trying to find a way to make the Final Girl solo board game work for Slasher/You're Next -- several seasons/editions seem to have been released in October-ish -- but it's hard to pin down a date because they were crowdfunded. Maybe someone else can manage to run with that idea!

Big thanks for the help! I put this on the backburner for awhile to get the other stuff out of the way and time just snuck up on me.

I just got the Alexa+ upgrade today and asked it if Final Girl: Ultimate Boxes was released in October 2024 as mentioned on this site. It said yes. I then asked it what specific date - "Series 1 and Series 2 were released on October 15th, 2024". AI's been wrong before (Gemini or Copilot told me Rob Bottin's birthday was in Oct when it's in April)., but good enough.

The spot was previously taken by Textploitation Terrors Volume III, and I was hoping to get both Vol II and III on a Saturday. We currently have both the 4th and 11th open. At the very least Vol II because the Mass Marathon of the Damned is perfect for that one. If anyone can help me with that I'd very much appreciate it.

All I could come up with for Textploitation on those dates were some film releases.

Textploitation Terrors Volume II:

10/4/68 - Night of the Living Dead (1968) released in US (The Definitive Guide to Horror Movies)

10/11/74 - Black Christmas (1974) released in Canada (The Definitive Guide to Horror Movies)
10/11/74 - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) released in US (The Definitive Guide to Horror Movies)
10/11/90 - Hell's Trap (Trampa infernal) (1989) released in Mexico (Bleeding Skull! A 1980s Trash-Horror Odyssey)

Textploitation Terrors Volume III:

10/4/68 - Night of the Living Dead (1968) released in US (The Monster Show: A Cultural History of Horror)

10/11/73 - Virgin Witch (1971) released in France (Satan in the Celluloid)

10/4/25: Kim Newman -- author of The Definitive Guide to Horror Movies -- is doing a talk with fellow film critic Anna Bogutskaya as part of the BFI London Film Festival.
10/11/25: PJ Thorndyke -- author of Satan in the Celluloid -- has a new
novel novel
coming out, Five Kisses from a Blasphemous Num: A Giallo Mystery Thriller

(Phew! Those were a stretch...)

Last date:

Rocktober - Trouble Every Day (#84) premiered in Spain at the Sitges Film Festival on October 10, 2001. That gives an option (some better than others) for the ones that are left.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 21: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Are you allowed to count a movie for the challenge if you already saw it this year? There's at least one that I literally just saw before even thinking about participating in the challenge and while it was good, eh, I'd rather spend my time watching stuff that's new to me. Are there truly "rules" on this sort of thing?

I only count the stuff I actually watch during the set challenge dates and I think that is also technically "the rules."

I have rewatched stuff again, even in the same year, if I wanted to count it during The Challenge.

Exactly. A film has to be watched between dusk 9/30 and dawn 11/1.

^The only exceptions are when there's a Friday the 13th in September. And I think we started things a few days early once during the pandemic.
