The 13th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - Discussion Thread 2024
The 13th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge Discussion Thread March 2024
Dates: Sunset on February 28th (bonus day this year. Whoo!) to sunrise on April 1st.
We have multiple overlapping challenges this year. The Oscar challenge runs until March 10th, so any action/adventure/crime/mystery flicks that were nominated or won Oscars will count as double credit for both challenges during those 10 days of March. Same with Romance/Musical overlaping on the 28th & 29th and Leap Day Challenge media overlaping over 02/28 - 03/02. I think this may count as the most overlaps evah.
Also, the B-Movie/Exploitation Challenge begins at dusk on March 30th so any action/adventure movies that also qualify for the April challenge will count as double credit.
Rules: Any film or TV show listed on IMDB/AllMovie with a genre of action, adventure, crime, or mystery counts for this challenge. You can use any counting method you choose.
Checklist is open for discussion, and will be in post #2 for easier editing and cut and pasting.

Starting at dusk tonight (the 28th) until dawn on March the 1st, there will be a ~36 hour crossover period where at least two different films, The Sword in the Stone (1963) and The Time Machine (1960), will count for quadruple Challenge credit.
These two films would count for February’s Romance/Musical Challenge, March’s Action/Adventure Challenge, the Quadrennial Leap Day Challenge, and the floating Academy Award Challenge. Don’t miss this chance to be part of DVDTalk history!

This is probably my favorite challenge after the horror one. Watching the Beverly Hills Cop trilogy today as I "work from home".

Would a documentary about an investigation count as a "crime" film? I'm thinking particularly about something like the Chilean film, The Mole Agent (2020), which I just watched for the Oscar challenge.

I would think that you could argue it as true crime pacaway.
I finished off my first season yesterday with Season One of Dogfights. The old History Channel show was filled with action showing famous dogfights in history move by move through the use of CGI.

Kind of a slow start for me this year especially since I was out of town most of this week. I celebrated getting back to the challenge today with a film-noir and near-noir triple feature. The standout today was Pitfall (1948) with Dick Powell, Lizabeth Scott, and Raymond Burr. A typical guy makes a couple of bad choices and ends up way over his head. Nice and tense with an interesting finish. Earlier in the challenge I watched the classic caper film Rififi (1955) which I also liked a lot. It's a French film. If you can deal with subtitles it's worth seeing. I watched an old Criterion DVD and I'm not sure if it's streaming anywhere or not.

I watched one episode each of Tokyo Vice and Shogun. Both are probably interesting enough for me to watch some more.

I'm trying to finish off Hawaii Five-0, a project I started over 7 years ago and stalled after a death in the family. Two more season left, basically. Will definitely finish it up after the challenge is over, though.

I often continue a series after a challenge ends and keep recording my watches in the list thread, especially when it’s a long series that will need multiple challenges.

A few days ago I found a playlist of the old Superman shorts from the 40s that used to air as bumpers during Toonami. I’ve been indulging in those at at least a few at a time every time I want to start my challenge for the day.
Also, a few days ago I was watching an old episode of Law & Order: SVU that I had on my DVR, and was shocked to see who the villain was. It was none other than Robin Williams, RIP. Just more proof that his dramatic acting ability really did know no bounds imo.

Watched A Close Shave (1995) tonight and as well as introducing us all to Shaun the sheep, you also see a lot of elements, like the Thunderbird-esque motorcycle launching sequence, that we would see again in Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005). Also covered both Trinity movies this weekend, and find it fascinating that the sequel, Trinity is Still My Name (1971) was the highest grossing Spaghetti Western made.

Interesting that you bring up spaghetti westerns. I was too tired to watch, but last night I was looking up Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name Trilogy. I discovered that it is available on Max. Roku TV's search option makes it very easy to find things.

It's a long weekend for some of us, so find your second wind, and make the most of it. Also, Sunday the 31st, is the last day of the Challenge, but the first night of the Drive-in/Exploitation Challenge (starts at dusk) so get those double credits while you can.
Sorry the list thread never got moved up to Sticky (won't PM next year), but it wasn't particularly onerous in any case. I'll try the Report link (from inside the List thread) next year and see if that get better results.

I got off to a slow start (being out of town) and a slow finish (Wonder Con) but I still managed to beat my scores for the last three years with 52 views, most of them movies. I haven't got really high numbers for a while now but I enjoy this challenge so I want to thank coyoteblue for keeping it going.
For folks moving on to the Exploitation challenge I found a great example of a B-movie streaming on Amazon Prime. It's called Pier 5, Havana and stars Cameron Mitchell and Allison Hayes with several other familiar faces. It's obviously low budget and has a predictable plot but I really enjoyed watching it. As a lobby card shouted "THE SCREEN'S FIRST BOMBSHELL OUT OF NEWLY-FREED CUBA!!!". It was released in 1959.
