Safe Lists
The following lists are Automatic Safe lists. They are not definitive and there might be exceptions therein, especially concerning Distributors. Generally, the presence of those on the lists in an actual creative capacity (that is, more than just a cameo or bit part. For instance, Bruce Campbell appearing in Spider-Man does not make Spider-Man safe) is enough to make a film safe. Got more? Post them and I'll update the list. Obviously, films not including these participants are safe, too. Update: I added several new names to the actors list. Some of these actors appeared in actual big budget Hollywood fare, but most of their career was in B-Movies, then obviously discard the Big Hollywood movies and just watch the B's (For example, William Shatner. Ignore Star Trek movies but anything else is fair game. Or Patrick Swazye. Ghost is probably not right, but most of his other films were B-Movies).

I didn't realize that they had added Let Me Die a Woman, so I have 3 more to watch. I don't know if I can handle that many in a month.

Just finished The Enchantress (1983) a late period Shaw movie directed by Chor Yuen. While I was watching the look of the movie reminded me of Mario Bava. In fact the look of a lot of Chor Yuen's movies remind me of Bava. What would it have been like, I wonder, if somehow Chor Yuen and Bava had managed to get together to make a movie. I don't know who would of directed or maybe they could have co-directed, I dunno, but that movie would have been either a magnificent failure or a mind-bending success...the world will never know.

My favorite Shaw Brothers movie is Love in a Fallen City, and I've seen more of their opera movies than swordsman movies, so my experience with them has been more on the prestige side of their output. I didn't start watching Hong Kong movies (except Enter the Dragon) until I got a DVD player and could get the subtitled DVDs, so I've never watched English dubbed versions. My wife's older sister used to take her to see English dubbed kung fu movies in the theater, and she probably never watched anything subtitled until after we were married, so her experience is the opposite of mine.

On the other hand, the English dub is usually better for a giallo or spaghetti western with one or more American or English stars.

Friday evening, I watched Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold and was surprised that its basically a James Bond movie... and it works. Tamara Dobson is charming as Cleo, and I wish the sequel had spawned a franchise. I've not done any research into how it was received critically or commercially. Maybe there wasn't an appetite for Bond rip-offs.

I've seen all of those, but I wouldn't mind watching the interviews. I think I first saw Nude on the Moon, Deadly Weapons, and Double Agent 73 on Joe Bob Briggs' show on the Movie Channel back in the '80s.

I was never into action movies (especially kung fu movies, which I thought were silly - I especially hated seeing people jumping over buildings) when I was young. Then, some time in the late '90s or early '00s I caught a Jackie Chan movie on cable, and was impressed with the humor and the stunts (and the realism and lack of wire work), and I started looking for more of his stuff to watch. Then I spread out into watching more Hong Kong movies, and eventually, mostly got over my dislike of wire work (I read comic books with people flying around, why was it bad in movies? I figured I should just go with it). I had a lot of cool stuff to discover (and still do).

I really don't care if I watch foreign movies subbed or dubbed. Both have their good and bad points. My hearing is bad enough now, that I usually play the subtitles on any movie where they are available anyway.

I'm beginning to discover that eligible movies are quite often on Dish if I don't feel like plugging in my DVD player or streaming something. Last night there was a Randolph Scott western on Encore Western, Coroner Creek. And earlier today I was starting to watch The Delta Force on Retroplex. I ended up getting sidetracked though, and never finished the movie.

Re: 13th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30, 2022

A slow start for me this year since I couldn't resist going to Wonder Con in Anaheim last weekend, my first comic convention since January of 2020. The crowds seemed smaller than previous years and many of my favorite dealers were not there or had less table space but still a good time.

Before the convention on Thursday evening I started out with Enter the Dragon from the Criterion Bruce Lee set that I picked up recently. That was as good as I remembered it and looked great. Then last night after I got home I fell into The Dungeon of Andy Milligan with The Ghastly Ones. Cheaply done but entertaining. Today I plan to watch one of the three (!) commentaries included and then move on to something else.

I watched my first Santo movie earlier this afternoon and really enjoyed it. Santo And The Vengeance Of The Mummy was on Tubi. I guess that’s what would be considered a Mexican Wrestling Movie?

You got it. Santo is the king of Mexican wrestling movies. Blue Demon would be 2nd.

My first semi-regret of the challenge was watching Fist of Fear, Touch of Death. All I can say is maybe Bruce Lee's daughter should stop getting offended at revisionist Tarantino portrayals when this exists. One of the flashback scenes uses clips from Invincible Super Chan while calling his great grandfather a "Samurai Master". I guess that's why they call it Brucesploitation, but at least it led me to seek out that film.

Tonight I'm catching the only two Corman-produced films in my collection I've yet to see for his 96th birthday - Angels Hard as They Come and Dead Space.

I thought that was just them streaming old episodes of their in house productions, and nothing new. Their cast from El Rey Nation pops up on Attack of the Show, Vannessa is a producer.

I have no idea, never had it with my cable tier. All I can say is I couldn't find a schedule other than the onscreen Roku guide that goes for a week.

Thanks for mentioning this! I wouldn't have thought to check Tubi for Santo movies but when I did a search, almost a dozen came up several of which I haven't seen yet.

Just finished Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) for the first time. Took me a little time, but by the end I was into it and there's definitely worse Django (1966) 'sequels' out there. Also got to thinking how many other Asian Westerns exist now. These are all the one's I'm aware of:

The Millionaires' Express (1986)
Tears of a Black Tiger (2000)
Dynamite Warrior (2006)
Sukiyaki Western Django (2007)
The Good, The Bad, the Weird (2008)
The Warrior's Way (2010)
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (2010)

Re: 13th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30, 2022

My challenge has slowed to a halt since the baseball season opened, though as a Reds fan I feel like those games should count as exploitation. Before that, I'd gotten to:

Circus of Fear/Five Golden Dragons double feature & Baba Yaga on Blu-ray from Blue Underground
I'd seen a black & white cheapie DVD version of Circus of Fear under its American title, Psycho Circus. I liked it enough I wanted to see it properly. It didn't look nearly as shoestring in full color HD. It even looked like a legit movie! I enjoyed Five Golden Dragons even more. Bob Cummings was charmingly affable throughout and I got a kick out of it. Baba Yaga, I learned, was intended to evoke its comic book origins and I think it largely accomplishes that. There are a lot of shots that feel blocked and lit in comic book ways. My favorite, which I can describe nebulously, is near the end as we look up to see Annette outside the house, lit up by a streak of lightning. And this was 22 years before Robert Rodriguez did Sin City, or Zack Snyder started doing any comic book movies! I felt Blue Underground did an exceptional job with their video, but the audio was possibly the weakest I've ever heard on a Blu-ray. I had to turn up the volume to almost twice what I usually have it set, nearly to full. Circus of Fear has a solid commentary track. Baba Yaga has a lengthy interview with its director and some other supplemental pieces. I found all of those material interesting and would recommend making time for them if you happen to have these releases.

Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls on DVD from Vinegar Syndrome
This was one that played in town the day I was born. It has an enjoyable whimsy and humor. It even has a coherent plot. Not a particularly complex one, but coherent! I think John Holmes was more into tossing pizza dough than any of his sex scenes. Dude looked like he was really into the pizza-making stuff. Desiree Cousteau vacillates between naive and clever depending on the scene. The plot includes a rapist for hire working for the pizzeria's competition to drive the staff into quitting and the pizzeria out of business. The attacks are played for laughs. I'm sensitive to that topic and playing it for laughs bothers me on principle, but I knew about it going into the movie from the summary on the back of the case. They happen off-screen and are downplayed enough that it didn't upset me beyond the conceptual level. The DVD includes an interview segment with producer Damon Christian in which he shares some anecdotes that I think I enjoyed even more than the movie.

Things have been busy for the past week or so for me, so haven’t really been in a movie watching mood. I remedied that oversight tonight with one of my comfort food movies. I hopped onto YouTube and watched White Zombie. I’ve always been a fan of Bela Lugosi, no matter what movie he was in.

Paper Tigers is a goofy little 2021 film about middle-aged guys who reunite to avenge their old sifu (a kung fu sensei). Funny and kinda sweet. It reminded me of an obscure comic book called Sons of the Tiger, which tried to capitalize on the 1970s martial-arts craze, because that was also three guys (one Black) avenging their master. Could just be a coincidence, though. On Netflix.

I didn't bother watching it, since it was already over half an hour in by the time I saw it was on, but on one of my movie channels last night, I saw a Sabata movie was on. A couple days ago I was in the middle of watching Unknown World on YouTube, but even though I had internet, YouTube lost its connection

Made time for Venus in Furs late last night, my first ever Jess Franco flick. I dug the story, James Darren's noir-esque voice over, and Maria Rohm's eerie mannequin-like performance. There was some distracting, intrusive, editing gimmickry at times, though. I was relieved to hear Franco note in the DVD interview supplement that even though he signed off on all that, he disliked it, too. That reassures me that these things are atypical of his filmography.

Just browsing the Dish guide alone today has led to a productive day today. I’m planning more movies tonight, but have already got three in. Early this morning a Roy Rogers and Gabby Hayes movie was on FMC. This morning Comet had American Warships. And following that, a Randolph Scott movie, Age Of Abilene was on FMC.
