Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fantasy Challenge List Thread

My spot goes here:
Titles in BLACK: from my personal DVD/BluRay collection
Titles in RED: seen streaming on Netflix
Titles in ORANGE: Seen streaming on Amazon Prime
Titles in GREEN: Seen on some other streaming service (I will specify which one in each entry)

July 1
1. Children of Dune
(2003) TV mini-series part 1 - Totally underrated adaptation of Frank Herbert's two Dune sequels. Yes, the effects are dated but the film still stands up with a deep and complex story and big ideas.
2. The Expanse (2015) Episodes: Windmills / Salvage

July 2
3. Children of Dune
(2003) TV mini-series part 2: The Children
4. Children of Dune (2003) TV mini-series part 3: The Golden Path
5. The Expanse, S1 (2016) Episodes: Critical Mass / Leviathan Wakes

July 3
6. Dollhouse, S1
(2009) Episodes: Echo / Ghost
7. Dollhouse, S1 (2009) Episodes: The Target / Stage Fright
8. The Expanse, S2 (2017) Episodes: Safe / Doors and Corners

July 4
9. The Expanse, S2 (2017) Episodes: Static / Godspeed
10. Dark, S2 (2019) Episodes: Dark Matter / Ghosts

July 5
11. The Hidden
(1987) Seen on VLIX streaming service. Cult classic about an alien that can inhabits human bodies.
12. Underwater (2020) Rented on the Cinépolis streaming service. Much better than expected aquatic thriller. Kirsten Stewart really shines as the main character.

July 6
13. Star Trek, S1
(1966) Episodes: The Cage / The Man Trap
14. Star Trek, S1 (1966) Episodes: Charlie X / Where No Man Has Gone Before

July 7
15. Star Trek, S1
(1966) Episodes: The Naked Time / The Enemy Within

July 8
16. Star Trek, S1
(1966) Episodes: Mudd's Women / What Are Little Girls Made Of?
17. Dans La Brume (A Breath Away) (2018) Seen on the Cinépolis streaming service. French movie about a killer mist released after an earthquake. The story focuses on a couple whose daughter is in an isolation tank and thus cannot be moved.

July 9
18. Star Trek, S1
(1966) Episodes: Miri / Dagger of the Mind

July 10
19. Star Trek, S1
(1966) Episodes: The Menagerie, Parts 1 & 2

July 11
20. Star Trek, S1
(1966) Episodes: The Corbomite Maneuver / The Conscience of the King
21. WILDCARD 1: The Dungeon Masters (2008) Seen on the Plex streaming channel. This documentary is not about D&D at all but about two men and one young woman whose very mundane and pathetic existence is made even more so by their obsession with D&D and the fantasy life they crave. The film is so cringe-inducing that it's difficult to watch at times.

July 12
22. Star Trek, S1
(1966) Episodes: Balance of Terror / Shore Leave

July 13
23. Star Trek, S1
(1967) Episodes: The Galileo Seven / The Squire of Gothos

July 14
24. Star Trek, S1
(1967) Episodes: Arena / Tomorrow is Yesterday

July 15
25. Star Trek, S1
(1967) Episodes: Court Martial / The Return of the Archons
26. Star Trek, S1 (1967) Episodes: Space Seed / A Taste of Armageddon

July 16
27. The Expanse, S2
(2017) Episodes: Home / Paradigm Shift

July 17
28. Cursed, S1
(2020) Episodes: Nimue / Cursed
29. Cursed, S1 (2020) Episodes: Alone / The Red Lake

July 18
30. Cursed, S1
(2020) Episodes: Nimue / Cursed
31. Cursed, S1 (2020) Episodes: The Joining / Festa and Moreii

July 19
32. Cursed, S1
(2020) Episodes: Bring Us In Good Ale / The Fey Queen
33. Cursed, S1 (2020) Episodes: Poisons / The Sacrifice

July 20
34. Star Trek, S1
(1967) Episodes: This Side of Paradise / The Devil in the Dark

July 21
35. The Expanse, S2 (2017) Episodes: The Seventh Man / Pyre

July 22
36. The Expanse, S2 (2017) Episodes: The Weeping Somnambulist / Cascade

July 23
37. Ex-Machina
(2014) Rented on the Cinépolis streaming service. A tech millionaire builds an android and recruits an employee to test her behavior to see if it can pass for human. One of the better films to explore the consequences of AI.

July 24
38. The Expanse, S2 (2017) Episodes: Here There be Dragons / The Monster and the Rocket / Caliban's War

July 25
39. Star Trek, S1
(1967) Episodes: Errand of Mercy / The Alternative Factor

July 26
40. Star Trek, S1
(1967) Episodes: The City on the Edge of Forever / Operation - Annihilate!

July 27
41. The Colour out of Space
(2010) Not the recent Nicolas Cage movie, but an artsy black and white German version which was slow moving but a decent effort.

July 28
42. Star Trek the Motion Picture
(1979) I've said it before and I'll say it again - this is my favorite Star Trek movie. Big ideas, a sense of wonder, fantastic effects (some of which blow away anything done today that look like video games) and the original cast still in their prime. Behind the scenes this was a very troubled production but the final result still holds up.

July 29
43. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
(1982) By a hair, this one comes under The Motion Picture as far as my favorites because yes, this is as awesome and deserving of its classic status. Whereas the first one was the old crew coming together and facing big science fiction ideas, this one is all character motivated with a simple revenge story.

July 30
44. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
(1984)

July 31
45. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
(1986)

Brainee's 2019 DVDTalk Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List

Previous challenge totals:
2009: 76
2010-2015: Abducted by aliens?
2016: 33.5
2017: 66.5
2018: 73
2019: 60

Goal: 31
Total: 31
First Time Views: 25

= first time viewing

Movies rated out of 5 stars (*****) based solely on my personal enjoyment.

June 30th (Dusk)
1. Russian Doll (2019): Season 1, episodes 5-8.

July 1st
2. ☼ Lost in Space (2018): S1E1-2.

July 2nd
3. ☼ Lost in Space (2018): S1E3-4.

4. Bacurau(2019): It seemed to run too long for its own good, and wasn't as fun and entertaining as the synopsis makes it sound. Still, there were a lot of interesting ideas at play here and certainly many striking moments. The sci-fi elements are light but there, with the story taking place in a near-future dystopian Brazil where corrupt politicians and "big city" Brazilians make money setting up kind of a competitive murder safari for Americans in a small town. ***1/2

July 4th
5. ☼ Lost in Space (2018): S1E5-6.

July 5th
6. Birds of Prey (2020): Not particularly sci-fi/fantasy (Black Canary is the only character with superpowers, and there's only one scene showing that). But I'm counting it using the "all superheroes movies count" umbrella, especially since it takes place in the DC Universe Nothing ground-breaking here, but a lot of fun. ****

July 6th
7. ☼ Lost in Space (2018): S1E7-8.

July 8th
8. ☼ Lost in Space (2018): S1E9-10.

July 10th
9. Snatchers(2019): Fun, silly 80's throwback kind of movie (comparisons to movies like Gremlins and Evil Dead are pretty on point). ***1/2

July 13th
10. The Platform (2019): Really interesting idea, that has a lot of real-life parallels. Doesn't quite stick the landing for me (though I wasn't really expecting it to). ***

11. Farmageddon(2019): Nothing ground-breaking, but a lot of fun especially for fans of sci-fi movies and tv shows that this references (like ET, Close Encounters, 2001, and a hilarious nod to Doctor Who). ****

12. I Lost My Body (2019): I've seen so many movies, and even good ones are usually derivative of something else. That's why it's such a treat when something unique like this comes along. Surreal, touching, sad, and beautiful. ****1/2

July 14th
13. Fast Color (2018): A low-key indie superhero/mutant story that drags a bit, but ultimately came together enough that I'd recommend it. ***

14. Greener Grass (2019): I guess this will be a wildcard (though any movie where children magically turn into Golden Retrievers has to be considered some kind of fantasy, right?). There were some funny bits and it certainly wasn't boring. Though 90 minutes of weird surrealism is a bit much, especially when it doesn't lend itself to me caring about the characters or what's going on with the story. **1/2 Wildcard #1

15. Sea Fever (2019): I had higher hopes for this based on glowing reviews and a strong start (and I'm always game for a good creature feature with a mix of gory body horror). But it wasn't that satisfying by the end, and I found the lead character frustratingly unlikable. **1/2

July 15th
16. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997): I watched the first movie shortly before the month (it's one of my favorites ... I'd rate it ****1/2 or *****), but I wanted to get around to rewatching the sequels (which I haven't seen in a long time). This is a big come-down from that, and feels like something Spielberg is doing just for the paycheck. **1/2

17. Jurassic Park III (2001): This, on the other hand, benefits from lowered expectations (though director Joe Johnston, while no Spielberg, has a solid filmography). This plays like a fun fast-paced popcorn flick, and I found it more enjoyable than Lost World. ***1/2

July 16th
18. Underwater (2020): Fast-moving and stream-lined thriller that I enjoyed. We've seen deep sea monster horror before, but this ups the pace from earlier movies with the entire movie being one chase (running from a collapsing drilling station, lack of oxygen, and monsters). A bit hard to tell what's going on at times, but I liked the reveal of the "boss" monster (looking a bit like Cthulhu). ***1/2

July 17th
19. Aniara (2018): Bleak but I like movies that don't telegraph where they are going. And ones that give you a lot to think about after they're over. ****

20. Butt Boy (2019): This movie was ass. No, I liked it ... it really was all about ass A nice example of how the dumbest sounding idea for a movie (in this case, a man who causes a string of disappearances by sucking people up his ass) can turn out ok. And despite the "comedy" tag on IMDb, this plays things very seriously. ***1/2

July 18th
21. The Old Guard (2020): Despite supposedly costing $70 million, this felt like a pilot for a mediocre SyFy channel series. While not bad, I thought it was awfully generic. **1/2

July 19th
22. Back to the Future (1985): I had to watch this after making it the picture for my list! I'll probably cue up the two sequels soon as well (unlike the original, I don't think I've watched them since they first came out). *****

July 20th
23. Back to the Future Part II (1989): A bit messy, but continues from the first movie in an interesting and fun direction. Of course it's funny now seeing what 1985 thought the future world of 2015 would be like. The original is in its own class, but the two sequels are very solid movies in their own right. ***1/2

24. Back to the Future Part III (1990): I wasn't so keen on this when it came out (I think I was put off by the Western setting). But this is great fun and a wonderful wrap-up to the series. ****

July 23rd
25. Zombi Child (2019): The last 20 minutes saved this ... up to then it was a disjointed and extremely slow-moving affair (and I don't know if it was Amazon's streaming print or the movie itself, but night-time scenes were so murky it was hard to see what was going on). I do like the idea of a French art house mix of Caribbean voodoo mythology, coming-of-age story, and geopolitical commentary. ***

July 24th
26. Before We Vanish (2017): I haven't been following director Kiyoshi Kurosawa since the late 90's and early 00's where he made a number of striking and creepy movies (like Cure, Pulse, Charisma, Doppelganger). While not bad, this is nowhere near the level of those. It has some interesting ideas (with body snatching aliens "stealing" concepts from people to prepare for an invasion) but runs far too long and just doesn't deliver in the end. There's a follow-up (Foreboding) that reviews say isn't nearly as good as this and I may pass on that one. **1/2

July 25th
27. The Vast of Night (2019): I like old-school sci-fi (which tends to be talky) so I was good with this. Nothing terribly original but it had good style and I thought the cast (and their dialog) did a good job of keeping me engaged despite relatively little actual going on. ***1/2

July 26th
28. ☼ The Expanse (2015): S1 Ep 1 and 2.

July 27th
29. ☼ The Expanse (2015): S1 Ep 3 and 4.

July 29th
30. ☼ The Expanse (2015): S1 Ep 5 and 6.

July 30th
31. ☼ The Expanse (2015): S1 Ep 7 and 8.
