13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

Guess what time of the year it is! That's right, it's the 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge!

List Thread for 2020 is HERE.

Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.

3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions (theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

Audio:

Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio

I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.

If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.

1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.

1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.

3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.

1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

*Exceptions:*
1: The Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
2. Superhero films. If they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy tag, they count for the watch list, but not for the check list.

Finalized Checklist:
Spoiler:
*Watching enough shorts or TV to count as one entry, you can use that one entry as a check on the checklist, as long as each of them count for whatever you're checking. You can mix and match what you've seen to make a check, they all don't have to be grouped together as a single entry on your watch list.

Prizes: This year we have a sponsor, Goldenwheels and HamiltonBooks! Thank you so much for sponsoring us!
I will randomly pick 3 winners at the end of the challenge. You must have a numbered list and live in the United States to qualify.

You will be able to gain up to 4 entries into the prize winner drawing.
1. Have a numbered list of your titles watched
2. Have at least 5 entries on the check list
3. Complete the checklist (don't have to watch something that fulfills every entry, but need to watch what the requirement)
4. Blackout the checklist (meaning complete every single entry)

I will randomly select the winners at the end of the challenge using a random number generator. Winners will be able to pick their prize ($15-$20) from HamiltonBooks.

2019's Discussion thread here.

Suggestions for next year, 2021:
Spoiler:
Par down the sub-genre list. Maybe pull out and make own section (Romance, Action/Adventure, Horror, ect)... Add Mythology to sub-genre list. See how the new time travel to the past that hasn't come yet did over the 2020 challenge.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds to actors' list, Michael Ironsides. Luke Evans
remove (maybe) Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee

Add: DTV and Made-for-TV movies, Food based movies. "Watch a TV mini-series or a complete season"

Remove director Francis Lawrence

Add to directors: Peter Jackson, Guilermo del Toro. Need more work on directors-maybe drop # required, need new names. Antonio Margheriti, Sam Katzman, and Globus & Golan, Alice Guy-Blaché. Maybe switch to "Watch 3 films by female directors, watch 3 films by male directors, watch 3 films by a POC director?" Roger Corman, Terrence Fisher, Freddie Francis,
Robert Stevenson, Robert Zemeckis has roughly 24 Sci-Fi/Fantasy credits. Robert Rodriguez has roughly 16 credits. Roland Emmerich has roughly 12 credits. Bryan Singer has roughly 10 credits but the vast majority are for the X-Men franchise. Christopher Nolan has roughly 8 credits and they are mostly for the DC movies. Alex Garland has roughly 7 credits and Duncan Jones has roughly 4 credits.

Suggestion: a core group of, say, ten "gimmes" and then another group of twenty "deeper cuts" from which half gets rotated in and out of the checklist. Gimmes I'd suggest:
  1. Harrison Ford
  2. Samuel L. Jackson
  3. Christopher Lee
  4. Ian McKellan
  5. Vincent Price
  6. Zoe Saldana
  7. Arnold Schwarzenegger
  8. Will Smith
  9. Akira Takarada
  10. Sigourney Weaver
In the rotating pool, I'd suggest including Michael Ironside in one group and David Warner in the other. Neither is an obvious gimme, but they each have more than a hundred eligible credits on IMDb so participants may well stumble across either without actively seeking them. I'd also suggest splitting Peter Cushing and Boris Karloff. suggest removing Gene Roddenberry, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Stan Lee, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells from "He's Dead, Jim" since they've each been dead for quite some time. Maybe create a "Thank the Maker" section for them since more stuff is based on things they created than things they personally wrote or directed? I'd shift George Lucas from Director to that pool and add Philip K. Dick.

Discuss removing NC-17/X/GP/M ratings, removing 1890s, 2020 decade until there are more years.

taken from alyxstarr's checklist:
Cover all the title types on IMDb:
-X- Feature Film -
-X- TV Movie -
-X- TV Series -
-X- TV Episode -
-X- TV Special -
-X- Mini-Series -
-X- Documentary -
-X- Video Game -
-X- Short Film -
-X- Video -
-X- TV Short -

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

Here are some of the suggestions from last year for this year's checklist.

For the actor list:
Dwayne Johnson (16 titles)
Josh Hutcherson (10 titles)
Tim Thomerson
Emma Thompson
Helena Bonham Carter
Peter Cullen
Nicolas Cage

Add "watch a superhero movie" to sub-genres.
Film based on a book

Remove Duncan Jones from Directors list. Add Francis Lawrence to director's list.

For the "he's dead, Jim" list: Rutger Hauer and David Hedison, Stan Lee (Missed him in 2019's challenge) Stuart Gordon, Kirk Douglas, Max von Sydow, Ian Holm

Any objections or suggestions to add?

I love this challenge. Have the whole month this year too, with Airventure Oshkosh going virtual this year, so won’t be going on vacation. I’ve watched some sci fi documentaries this month, and listen to an episode of Coast to Coast AM almost on a daily basis. And this month, they count. Been tempted to watch some sci fi tv and movies too.

This is my favorite challenge. I love the horror one but SF/Fantasy wins handily for me. It's also the first challenge in which I participated.

I have far too much unwatched material to get in so it'll be a month of difficult choices and that's a good thing. :)

Just ordered several movies in anticipation of this challenge. Can't wait!

We might consider Francis Lawrence for director and Nicolas Cage for actor.

I can adds them to the list. My only objection is that Lawrence only has a 3-4 titles total that he seems to have directed. 3 of which are The Hunger Games. Is that really enough titles for an add? That being said, change is good...so if no one objects, I'll add him to the check list.

Any actors/directors that have passed in the last year that should be added?

For a bit of exciting news, we are having prizes this year! Goldenwheels and HamiltonBooks have agreed to sponsor the challenge! A bit thank you to Goldenwheels!

Now for the rules: I will randomly pick 3 winners at the end of the challenge. You must have a numbered list and live in the United States to qualify.

I was thinking of giving an extra entry for people who use the checklist. So 1 entry for the numbered list, 1 entry for a complete checklist. Would people like that option or should I just stick to 1 entry per list?

Either way. If someone's actually making the effort to do the checklist might as well reward them. I gave up on the checklists years ago; too much work/too much structure.

Looking forward to next month! Just bought the original Planet of the Apes films the other day in anticipation.

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I'm kinda flip-floppy on Kirk Douglas. He only made four sci-fi movies:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
The Fury (1978)
The Final Countdown (1980)
Saturn 3 (1980)

and they're all watchable, but is four movies really enough or does he get a pass for being in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

tarfrimmer 06-20-20 01:23 PM

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

He was also in the fantasy films:

Ulysses (1954)
The Light at the Edge of the World (1971)
The Story of Three Loves (1953)

I'm cool either way. :) I'm planning to watch The Light at the Edge of the World. Don't recall ever seeing that one before.

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

What with the end of the SF/F Challenge and the beginning of the Animation Challenge overlapping I thought I'd post a helper for those that want to double tap the challenges (I'll probably re-post it when the Animation Challenge thread goes up).

Movie
The Incredibles (2004)
The Incredibles 2 (2018)
The Iron Giant (1999)
Fire and Iced (1983)
Heavy Metal (1981)
Hellboy: Blood and Iron (2007)
Isle of Dogs (2018)
Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
Onward (2020)
Nocturna (2007)
Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)
Zombillénium (2017)
Castle in the Sky (1986)

TV
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts
Adventure Time
Steven Universe
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Amphibia
Jonny Quest
Gravity Falls
Steins;Gate
Patlabor
Slayers
Gurren Laagan
Thuderbirds are Go!
Danger Mouse

There's enough sf/f animation out there that you could watch stuff everyday for this challenge and there would still be more than you could possibly watch available for the Animation Challenge.

Doh! I forgot fantasy. With these there's seven movies total and that's good enough for me.

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

While I haven’t bought any DVDs recently, I still have plenty I can watch for this challenge between the discs I do have, and streaming services. Among others, I get HBO Max free through AT&T, and also there is a lot on Disney+ to watch. Add into that others like Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc, I’ll be spoiled for choice.

Regarding sf/f animation, most of my animation is eligible for this challenge. Among other shows, I’m still working my way through Voltron. I’m on the Vehicle Force episodes right now. I also have Season 1 of both He Man And The Masters Of The Universe and She Ra: Princess Of Power. Other shows I have are the US and Japanese Transformers G1 series, MASK, Saber Rider, Jayce And The Wheeled Warriors, Tekkaman Blade, Teknoman. Those are just DVDs. I have more on digital through Amazon and Google Play.

Edit: Thanks to a $5 credit on GameFly, I just ordered a free copy of Geostorm. Looking forward to to watching it next month.

A friend of mine just bought Star Blazers, so I might borrow that this year. I haven't seen that show in forever

Of all people, I can't believe MY WIFE actually asked if I'm doing the challenge this year. She suggested I watch the Outlander series. So besides new Blu-ray and 4K movies I guess I'll be watching that for the challenge!

Let me go make my list...

Yep, he gets a pass purely for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. :) I love the song Whale of a Tale! And since I'm the host, he's in! But I think he has enough of both titles to qualify. There are a handful of TV guest spots that qualify too. I swear this by my tattoo!

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

For the prizes, I think what I'm going to do, if there is no objections, is 1 entry for having a numbered list (basically, just participating). 1 entry for having at least 5 entries on the checklist. 1 entry for a completed checklist. That way if you don't want to follow the checklist you don't have to, but it'd be pretty easy to earn a second entry without having to fill a full one out. If you participate at all, it is super easy to get checks for the list without even trying.

AND if you have the time and energy, I'll give another entry for a full blackout checklist because you would totally deserve it if you manage that!

That means that you could have up to 4 entries for the 3 prizes.

I'll update the first post at some point, but prizes will be up to the winners. Each winner will get a "budget" of about $15-$20 at HamiltonBooks.

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I was thinking earlier today about one of my possible watches. Many years ago while at Wal Mart, I picked up the Discovery Channel special, Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real . It is filmed like it was a documentary, dealing with a man who found a fossil of a dragon in the mountains of Europe. I haven’t watched it in two or three years that I can recall, but enjoyed it.

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I watched Val Kilmer's The Saint (1997) (aren't we due for another take on Simon Templar?) last week. I was surprised to see that it qualified as sci-fi, though 23 years later, fantasy is probably more accurate now.

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I was talking about the check list with a friend last night, trying to find a few new ideas. We came up with a few. Please take a look and let me know yay or nay, please!

Romance as a new genre/type.

Steampunk (Ex: Anything based on Jules Verne like Journey to the Center of the Earth where it's 19th aesthetics with futuristic technology. Wild, Wild West would work)

Time travel to the past from the future, but that past is still our future right now (opposite of what we have now, kind of.) ex: Star Trek: First Contact. I may combine this one with the original one but open to suggestions if people are interested..

Watch a movie that has no weapon use (swords, lances, guns, ray gun, phaser)

David Warner to actors list.
