The Ninth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2019

Rules

This Challenge overlaps with two well-established Challenges - October's Horror Challenge and the November-December Holiday Challenge. During the overlapping days, you can receive "double credit" by listing any qualifying items watched for those other two Challenges on your Comedy Challenge list.

It should be self-evident what titles qualify, but if you have questions about something you've never seen, check out its genre classification on IMDB, Allmovie, or metacritic, or ask about it in the discussion thread. Live events (stand-up acts, plays, TV show tapings, etc.) and audio performances (comedy albums, old-time radio shows) can also be listed.

Post your list in the list thread. Be as creative or as basic with your list as you want.

You may number (or not number) the items on your list any way you like. However, the preferred method is, as with the Holiday Challenge, any title watched, no matter how long or how short, counts as one list item. This should make it easier to record qualifying items on both lists if you participate in both Challenges.

PRIZES: Three winners will receive their choice of $20 worth of items from Hamilton Book. Thanks again to Hamilton and Golden Wheels for sponsoring the challenge!

To be eligible (US addresses only):

-Have a list in the list thread with at least one item in it = one prize entry
-Watch and list an item that also counts for the Holiday Challenge (begins 11/22) = one prize entry (please note this in your comedy list so I don't have to cross-check )

The winners will be randomly selected from all the prize entries after the Comedy Challenge ends.

Hamilton Books is a confirmed sponsor for the 2019 challenge! Thanks, Hamilton and Golden Wheels!

Prize eligibility is TBD, but having a list with at least one item in it is always a good start.

I wasn’t able to watch anything last night due to a power outage, but this morning I was looking for something to watch, and came across some Three Stooges on AMC.

I don't know if it's still available (and I'm not home to check), but there was a Three Stooges channel on Roku about a year ago. They sometimes had commercials - usually played before the film. I burned through the ones I hadn't seen recently (A,C. - after Curly) pretty quickly, and I don't remember if I kept the channel or deleted it after I finished. I have them all on disc, but it was easier to watch them streaming.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to check it out. I too have them all on DVD, but you’re right. Streaming is easier. Case in point is that I just watched ‘Spook Louder’ for today’s theme, on YouTube,

Nevermind. I checked on Roku after I got home, and I can't find that channel anymore. I'm surprised it's gone. You'd think there would be enough people who want to watch the Stooges to keep an ad-supported channel afloat. Maybe it wasn't an official licensed project and they were forced to shut down. Anyway, I'm sorry I mentioned it. I had gotten my own hopes up about watching some of them again.

I guess there's just so much to think about before we can put it into words.

This is the first day I've gotten to really just sit and watch for an extended period. I was still feeling the horror vibes from October and couldn't seem to make myself enjoy any other genre. But, today, I sat down and got a few comedies in... I rewatched Son in Law expecting to hate it because Pauly Shore, but actually found myself enjoying it. I also watched Easy A, which may be my most overlooked movie in years. I loved it a lot and now I finally understand why Emma Stone has the following she has... Just started Stuber, so finally starting to settle into the groove.

Haven't gotten into "movie mode" yet... still recovering from a month of horror with a first time viewing of Doc Martin. Been watching 2-5 episodes a day the past week or so and am just about to finish S5.

I typically very much dislike when a kid/baby is injected into a series - drama or comedy - and was dreading it with this series. Surprise! It's not that bad and doesn't detract at all. In fact it adds quite a bit without truly changing the show's dynamic.

Thanks for bringing the funny to the comedy challenge!

I didn’t get to Happy Death Day 2 U during October but figured it’d work here. I thought it was an effective sequel that maybe suffered from getting too much into the secret sauce, but thought I should read the dedicated thread to see the reaction there.

I was in the mood for a Richard Curtis movie, so I watched Four Weddings and a Funeral. I like the movie, but not as much as Notting Hill and others. I guess I’ve never really warmed up to the Andie McDowell character.

I've watched a few episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard this month. When I was a boy, I would have said the main element of this show was the car chases and such. The comedy stands out when I see it now. The characters are so over the top--Sorrell Booke and James Best are as much fun as the Dukes.

I had been away from the challenge for a few days, so tonight I decided to look at some cartoons. I discovered that Dish On Demand has DC Super Hero Girls. I had never seen the show, so decided to give it a try. I actually enjoyed it.

I’ve loved every “kid” DC comic animation I’ve ever tried. They may suck at movies, but DC has always had strong animation.

Aw, thanks Bob! I would say thanks for the reminder, but I picked 11/11/11 partly so I’d never forget!

There've been a couple of DC animations I've not much cared for but overall they're superb. I've often stated they need to turn the animation group loose on the live action stuff so we'd get a really good live action movie too. They tell a much better story and don't waste time/effort on visual effects. CGI visual effects bore the crap out of me and it seems like all the live action super hero movies are becoming not much more than giant CGI fests with little to no story tying it all together.

I remember you saying that before you married - and it's also why I remember the date.
