The 10th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

The 10th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread
2019

List thread is here.

The Details

Challenge starts July 31st at 12:01 am local time.

Challenge ends September 1st at dawn.

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled Animation from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine.

This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, computer, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would generally be allowed.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here.

Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Watching the movie/show with the commentary can counted as unique items.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count.

Lists

Since the general consensus seems to be for the easy counting method we will go with that. However, it is not required, so if you wish to count another way, feel free, as I will not be doing stats.

How to win

Names will be randomly selected from http://www.random.org/lists/ The top people, one prize per person, get something. Unfortunately, prizes can only go to people who live in the States.

Criterion Crossover: Since there are so few, I decided to post those movies that qualify for double credit for both challenges. They are: Akira, Fantastic Planet, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Watership Down, Jason And The Argonauts, King Kong, Robocop. Also, there is animation in the By Brakhage and Science is Fiction box sets. Also, Jellyfish Eyes, King of Jazz and the Eclipse set, Dusan Makavejev: Free Radical could count as well.

Newer additions: The Fabulous Baron Munchausen, The Plague Dogs, The Triplets of Belleville, Watership Down
Along with these shorts: Asparagus, Begone Dull Care, Bluebeard, Coda, Edmond Was a Donkey, Hunger, Logorama, Madame Tutli-Putli, Monkey Love Experiments, Solar Walk, Yearbook, Yours Faithfully, Edna Welthorpe (Mrs).

Re: The 10th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

Please take a look at the check list. I alphabetized the sections and changed some of the requirements. I also added Pixar to the studios list and two new names to the actors list (Messick and Garrett).

There is also my thought from last year: I thinking of moving the stand alone list item, Watch a Saturn Award for Best Animation Film winner, down to the 4 stand alones (watch an animated non-fiction movie, Academy Award Short film, watch something that had a tv spinoff (or vice versa) and watch an Academy Award animated film) and make all 5 of them watch 3 out of 5.

OR I could move all 5 of those to the other one of those (with watching an anime/puppet show/etc...) and just make it one big section. So Saturn Award winner, the 4 stand alones and the other short list of options (anime/puppet show).

Thoughts on this?

Looking forward to this!

I don't find anything wrong with the checklist.

Me too! Waiting until the end to break open my set of Jonny Quest that will count for both that last day.

Thanks for looking at the checklist, do you have an opinion on merging those sections?

I'm debating whether to watch Dragonball Z: Dragon Boxes as I have the complete set or to start with Thundercats or He-Man. I will continue to watch Detective Conan from last year challenge.

Decisions, Decisions...

I might start watching cartoons early, as I have quite a few sci fi and fantasy animated series and movies.

Or watch 'em all. Rotate through so you don't burn out? I've had that happen, where I like a show, but after sitting down and watching 20-30 episodes in a row, I'm just ready to stop. But if I alternate between discs (so more 3-4 episodes) then it's not so bad.

Never hurts to start early!

I think I will start this off with A Goofy Movie... been holding onto the bluray waiting for this challenge.

I'm always glad to see some additions to the studios and actors list. I like the current checklist but I'm open to any changes that are made.

This was a suggestion over on the Sci-Fi/Fantasy challenge, but does anyone have any comments/feelings about adding Peter Cullen to the voice actor list?

Based on his resume, he should have been on it years ago.

Adding if no one else chimes in before tomorrow afternoon. Will be finalizing the list tomorrow night. Last chance for a voice in the checklist!

First day of the challenge has arrived! I hope everyone is enjoying their first watches!

The checklist is finalized. Make sure you are using the updated version. The one in this thread was updated but the list thread was only updated a few minutes ago.

Prize update: I've contacted GoldenWheels about prizes a while ago, but so far haven't heard back. Will update when I get more information!

Enjoy the challenge, everyone!

I started in the middle of the night when I woke up with the first episode of a documentary series on prehistoric animals. I like to take advantage of this Challenge to watch cgi movies and tv shows as well as other kinds of animation.

LorenzoL 07-31-19 05:07 PM

Re: The 10th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I just came back from the cottage and didn't have time to start anything yet. I'll probably watch a episode or two of the latest Detective Conan episodes on Crunchyroll.

After a very long time, I watched Vampire Hunter D tonight. I loved it the first time I saw it but rewatching it, I don’t think it holds up as well.

Just make sure that it's more CGI than regular live action! Or maybe at least 40%. It is the animation challenge after all! :)

I hate when that happens. Something you grew up with doesn't age well or now you're in a different mind set than you were originally. There's one or two films/TV shows I wish I hadn't rewatched as now they're a bit tainted.

Re: The 10th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

Um LJG, could you look at orlmac's list in the list thread. It kept reverting to like this in the Science Fiction list thread but only when I hit edit. Now it's all bolloxed up without hitting edit. Could you (or anyone else) tell me what to do to stop this from happening (and hopefully fix it right now). Thanks!

Hmm. Looks like somehow the source button got turned on but didn't turn itself off. Weird. I'm coming up with only a couple suggestions. You used to be able to revert to an older save point. Is that still an option? Or trying to delete all the extra code you don't need (<>). Typing that, I think that's the problem. All the < should be [, right? Maybe switching them would fix the problem?

It's pretty early in the challenge, could you just start over? Delete everything that's there and re-enter your watches/checklist? A pain, but do-able.

My final suggestion is try to get a hold of a mod. See if there is a way for them to fix it on their end? I haven't seen this glitch here before so not sure what would have caused it...

Sorry! I hope something I mentioned ends up helping!

Sent you a PM with corrected text. Just copy and paste the text into your editor and click Save. I checked it with Preview and it looked good, but if your editor is on the fritz it may still garble it. (I could only access what was visible).

Thanks, coyoteblue! My version that I saw was pretty garbled. I had hoped that I still had a clean version but I had already refreshed it after it went wonky.

The English dub which I saw first is quaint but I enjoy it more in Japanese with subtitles. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is the one I struggle rewatching... "Charlotte, Charlotte, I love you..."

Re: The 10th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

Most of the editors are pretty horrible on a browser - even the recommended, supported, one breaks things horribly (that would be the "Enhanced Interface - Full CKEditor editing" one).

Here are the choices:

Basic Editor - A simple text box
Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls
Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG editing
Enhanced Interface - Full CKEditor editing

I've found only the "Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls" works well and still allows "old style" formatting of posts without adding the junk that messes things up royally. The main drawback is often you get a smallish box that can't be stretched horizontally but can go vertical as far as you want. That normally happens with quoting a post *or* editing an existing post *if* the page hasn't been reloaded recently. If you're editing your list you should reload the page first then select "Edit" and you'll get a box like the one before they messed up the site with the "New improved layout" junk and broke the editors.

The editor is changed in the "User CP" - "Options" section.

Yeah, this is a big help, it will give me some things to try when it happens again. It's been happening constantly for about 2 weeks so I expect it will again. Thanks!

Yes, thank you very much for the work you put in. It is very much appreciated. I'll make sure I start copying the fresh versions of what I do so that I can delete and copy them if it continues to be necessary. Thanks again!

Looking much better! Though, I think there's one more <> that's still showing right above the checklist.

Going to pop something short in the player in a bit. I am about to start Jonny Quest disc 2 but may watch something else. Not really in the mood for that right now but I'm not sure what I'm in the mood for!

I started my rewatch of the new Jonny Quest BR. I'm still amazed at how good this looks!

I have two small complaints about its execution on disc.. The first is they *loop* the theme song (the show open) on the main menu. I really don't like that practice. Put it there if you must but play it once and stop. The second is they fade it out *two* seconds before it completes. *TWO SECONDS!!* That's just wrong...

I been watching some episodes of Baki the past couple of days before falling asleep on Netflix. This ultra violent anime is not for everybody but I find it almost soothing because it's so ridiculous.

I have to admit that I finally watched Wreck-It Ralph today. I started it back when I bough the Ultimate Edition Blu-ray when it first came out but never finished it. I still find the beginning slow and boring but once they get to Sugar Rush land, the movie picks up. As a gamer, it was nice to see all of the little nods to the old games.

I feel you as Vampire Hunter D is not the only one for me either.

I have a beautiful He-Man DVD complete set in the shape of Castle Greyskull and is wasted as I don't enjoy the show at all as I used to when I was younger. I find the show boring with the use of the repeated animation that it does when they are running or changing characters and the worst part is the preachiness of it. It make me think what I was thinking for liking this show and begging my mom to buy me the toys.

I think that's why I have been hesitant to watch my Thundercats set in this challenge.

I don't tend to sit on the menu that much, but I get you. That is annoying when it just repeats and repeats and repeats...

I enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph but get what you're saying about the beginning. A lot of my like for the movie is nostalgia, looking to see who all they included in the film. I do like Vanelope though. The sequel isn't that great, unfortunately. Lots of hidden Easter Eggs, but it didn't catch my attention like the first one did.

I have totally been where you are with He-Man. I think part of it too is that we have instant access to a ton of them all at once. Back in the day, we had to wait at least a week for the next episode and who remembers what happened other than generals from week to week? I have a feeling they also used a lot of animation over and over again to save time and money. "Let's use this 2 minute segment and save 2 weeks of work!" Now with things on computers, it's a lot quicker to put out new episodes. I used to watch He-Man too, but don't remember the preachiness. I guess I'm glad I never picked up a season! That would annoy me too.

Forgot about future double credit possibilities and watched my August animation Criterion tonight. Wow. If you want a true WTF sort of film, I’d recommend Jellyfish Eyes. Pokémon Kaiju sort of sums it up I guess. I either hate it or love it, can’t decide yet.

I watched this myself a few years ago and had the same feeling. It's been long enough I don't remember a ton of details, but I do remember the WTF feeling. Often.

But talking about double credit with Criterion, has there been any new films added over the year? I should probably just ask Travis, but I'll ask it here first.

A little over a month ago, I got a subscription to VRV. That should give me lots of animation to watch. Besides Crunchyroll, there is also Boomerang and a couple other anime sources on there. I look forward to making use of it this month.

I only know two movies: Akira and Fastastic Mr. Fox. Thanks to Trevor there's a third one.

If you take a look at the original post towards the bottom, I do have the crossover's listed. They are: Akira, Fantastic Planet, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Watership Down, Jason And The Argonauts, King Kong, Robocop. Also, there is animation in the By Brakhage and Science is Fiction box sets.

I'm just not sure if there were any more released over the last year...but, that gives you a few more to chose from!

My son absolutely loved He-Man and still does (doesn't care for She-Ra at all - which I find odd). So much that it's one of the few DVD sets he didn't purge when they got rid of a bunch of discs a few years back in a "clutter reduction" type purge. I bought him the series about 10 years ago for Christmas and he was thrilled. During the original airings a local toy store went out of business and I was able to get Castle Greyskull, Skeletor's Castle, most of the vehicles, characters, and a few carriers for the figures at ~$.10 on the dollar. It also helped that the series and toys were on the back end of popularity but high end of availability (he was born in 82 so didn't see it until he was around 6). It was a He-Man Christmas.

Me... I saw it for what it was back then - mostly a vehicle for selling toys. At least it had a "moral" at the end (but didn't almost all of the 80s cartoons have that?). It didn't help that it was from Filmation - Kings of cheap, very limited, animation. There are times in their product that the only thing moving on the screen is a mouth. They also overused animation loops (especially with backgrounds). All of it was to reduce costs. At least all their work was produced in the US but it's such a lower quality that it's immediately noticeable. You can show me a cartoon they produced that I've never seen before and I can pick it out of a "lineup" every time because of their techniques. They're one of the reasons it took me so long to finally accept Star Trek: The Animated Series.

I don't tend to sit on the menu that much, but I get you. That is annoying when it just repeats and repeats and repeats...

If they'd have just allowed the theme to complete I'd be a bit more forgiving. I just don't understand why they'd fade it out 2 seconds before it naturally ends.

I watched V5 of Family Guy yesterday (contains the first 13 episodes of S5). I don't remember the first 4 seasons of this series being quite so vulgar. Sure, it has its moments but this seemed a bit over-the-top on a regular basis. So... I can't decide if I like it or not at this point (I do like the first 3 seasons but don't remember much about S4) but have 3 more volumes so...

I switched gears to S2 of King of the Hill after that. I'd never seen this one during its original airings and did a blind buy of the first 2 seasons several years ago. Some time back I watched S1 and was surprised at how good it is. I'm finding S2 continues the overall goodness of the series. I have 4 more seasons of this one.

A few years ago I bought the Mill Creek collection of He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe , Season 1 as well as both volumes of Season 1 of She Ra. I’ve been considering watching some Transformers , but am not sure if I want to start over with Generation 1, or continue with the Japanese series,
