Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

Welcome back cwileyy, and congrats Ed!

I’m really tempted by that $70 price on the Universal films collection. Those are perhaps my favorite “sub-genre” in this obsession of ours. But I own all the DVDs, and the main film BD collection from the UK, and this set on sale has no new features, and the problem 3D. But I think some of my old DVD sets are succumbing to rot. Decisions decisions.....

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

Congratulations, Ed!

Well, we're finally getting cold weather around here, and I'm hoping for a seasonal Halloween this year.

Started watching Beyond the Gates this morning and I sure hope this one holds up, as I'm enjoying the video store vibe.

Here are my choices for top zombie movies, in no particular order:
Land of the Dead- This one ramped up the action, while providing some nice social commentary. I really liked the idea of the 'protected city' giving the illusion of security in the midst of a post-apocalyptic zombie holocaust.
28 Days Later - Running zombies!
Zombie 2 - This was one of my first introductions to Italian zombies. I really love the effects in this one.

I went ahead and ordered the 30-disk set for those reasons Trevor. I have the UK Essentials blu box, and two of the Legacy blu sets (Dracula and Wolfman), and the entire Legacy DVD set (with monster busts). Some of the DVDs from my Legacy set are not playable anymore, so....

And if you’re going to spend money on iTunes, be sure to never pay full price.

$70 for the full Universal Horror set is a fantastic deal! I''d jump on it if I didn't already own all the DVD sets, plus the Blu-Ray set of the Universal Classic Monsters Collection, plus the Wolf Man and Mummy sets on Blu.

Congrats! I watched "It's Alive" earlier this year and thought it was a lot of fun. The two sequels not so much.

I'm back home from my conference but have a house guest til tomorrow night. I've been able to get in at least a couple a day, but I'm looking forward to the next week when I hope to really glut myself.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I had a good weekend of viewing that has put me at 70. I'm feeling better about my chances at 100. I'm confident I'll keep up with themes and still hope to finish the subset. The checklist is the one that's dogging me right now. It's the recently deceased and director categories in particular that are tripping me up. Those categories never fail to have movies that just aren't on my radar for this year's viewings.

Speaking of checklist, if anyone is still needing the makeup category, the movie Species actually counts for two checks since two of the makeup artists on our list worked on that movie.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I think I’ll hit 100 films tomorrow, although probably over the threshold now if you count TV. Really enjoying the series Fortitide on Amazon; anyone else watch/watching that?

Took this occasion to read through the list thread a bit. As always, impressed by a lot of lists and shamed that I’ve once again gone bare-bones. Surfinhank’s beautiful entry is bound to win “best list” again. In the volume department, looks like MysterioMan007’s record will be safe, as no one is looking to breech 300 this year. Tarfrimmer is on an impressive streak, increasing his total each year since 2006, and on pace to finally break into the win column. Undeadcow and MysterioMan007 have an outside shot to catch them, but would have to get a little crazy, or put a hex on tarfrimmer’s devices.

Same. I am close to on track to hit the 100 and theme night but I have given up on the checklist this year due mostly to the deceased section.

Just buy it, Trevor! It's absolutely worth the price for the upgrade over the DVDs. I own the original, problematic, flippers, the later remastered SS DVD box set, the main film BD UK collection, and have purchased the individual BR sets as they've come out. I've watched all the films on BR except the "Creature..." set (still waiting for my replacement disc - which shouldn't be an issue with this set as it's supposed to have that corrected disc).

The films have *never* looked better. There's additional, formerly missing, footage on one of the Frankenstein films (don't recall just which off the top of my head and am too lazy to look it up right now). It's not much but is there. AND you get "Abbott and Costello meet the Invisible Man" on BR!

Even owning everything I'm tempted by that price just to get the outer box and "Phantom..." with the Legacy Collection insert (even though I own it in the UK set and it's the lesser version of the story - I'm considering putting the BFI BR set in that box with the 1943 movie so it would truly be the "Legacy Collection" that Universal should have published). The booklet is the same as the one in the DVD box and the UK main film set.

Congrats to Ed on the Win and thanks again to Chad and GoldenWheels for manning the ship.

Universal Studios and their double, triple, quadruple dipping ways. $70 is an epic deal.

Finding hidden gems is the best part of the challenge and every year it seems like people's recommendations here and in their lists help uncover them.

I'll just be happy to finally break 200; which I'm on track for doing. I feel like once I make 200 I can 'retire' and maybe slow some in future challenges (yeah, right).

The deceased section is unwieldy filled with random people often with scarce horror offerings. I too hate it, almost as much as the 'masters of commentary' segment. After over 150 films so far I've still been unable (or unwilling) to complete those two.

^ You convinced me Bob! Ordered and set for Thursday delivery. And wow, you reminded me that I own one of those big legacy gift sets with the mini-busts, unopened. Probably own the main originals on at least 5 discs each now.

Everyone who saw the Happy Death Day 2U trailer before Halloween 2018, what did you think?

Seemed almost a little to similar and jokey...

^ Yeah, the deceased and actor sections seemed harder than normal to complete this year. For next year I’d suggest a few more actors, and maybe just 3 instead of 5 on the deceased.

By the way, I enjoyed the movie. It probably ran a bit long, but it was a well-made movie that built up well and ultimately delivered IMO. A nice addition to the sub-genre of isolated villages with evil cults (and their dark god). One little twist this movie did to that formula was:
Spoiler:
that the "god" seemed like it may have been a benign "Mother Earth" sort, but was just exploited (and imprisoned) by the cult leaders. And I thought it was nifty ending with the main hero putting the "god" out of her misery and ultimately getting the powers of life and renewal she had to keep the island alive.
I really enjoyed Apostle today; I had been chancing it on random indie horror movies lately and having just finished one where there was only really one actor the whole movie Apostle was a refreshing change. It's a very grand movie with well staged scenic imagery and a cool premise better I not go into.

Spoiler:
My interpretation is that the Silent Hill style creature was a creation of the Goddess, but it is a mystery because if she had powers like that then you would think she would have been in control of everything - but maybe that was a subtle twist, that she was in control manipulating things along to free her from her true prison (of being a goddess without death).

I think you'll be quite pleased with the set.

My "Bust" set is opened. BUT everything's still in the box and on display that way. My grandson (now 15) called them "Those men" when he was much younger. I kept expecting them to do a 2nd set with The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and The Creature but it never came. Maybe the first didn't sell as well as expected. I can see those last 3 busts in my head and think they'd have looked very cool sitting beside the first 3.

I have at least 5-6 copies each of Dracula and Frankenstein in various releases and sets. 3-4 of most of the others (not including those which have 2-3 copies each across the collection sets - those are 6-9 copies each).

Also saw the new Halloween and really liked it. They did a great job of bringing the story into 2018. It's a must see in the theater.

Anybody been watching Eli Roth's History of Horror? I was so surprised that Steve Miner finally said "yes" to a filmed interview for the Slashers episode. That's the first time I've ever heard the man talk. Btw, I gotta keep in mind to nominate him for the Director list next year.

The deceased section was tough last year as well, but at least I got a fun movie out of one of this year's picks (Dorothy Malone in Rest in Pieces) and I'd also would be fine with lowering the number on those picked.

I don't know what I'm more disappointed in myself with, my inability to juggle a new job and comment regularly here in the discussion, or my aging incompetence regarding technology. It wasn't until tonight that I figured out I can just download ALYXSTARR's file onto a thumb drive and pop that bad boy into the USB on the front of my Blu-ray player and I have a perfect night's watch for the Subset. How long have I missed that fancy little option? Don't answer; save me the embarrassment.

I will probably like it, but it seems like overkill to revisit the same day as in the first movie. However, the idea of things suddenly taking a strange turn where things start to change without her interference is intriguing. I'm wondering of we're getting someone with a similar power to be the antagonist. But it looks interesting. I just hate that we have to see the same day again.

Congrats. Your post made me curious, and according to my scribbled-down-on-paper viewings for the past week due to neglecting to update my list yet again, it looks like my next viewing will be #100.

I'll actually admit I kinda liked it, even if it does have quite a few similarities to The Hidden. Also there's a Creighton Duke spinoff film (sans Jason) in development.

Congratulations to the people hitting 100. Doesn't look like I'll hit it this year. It makes me sad, but I will do my best to get close. I'm sitting at just over 50 now.
