I watched Viy (1967) on Monday. It's a Russian film and has a very authentic Russian folklore feel and casting. It's a bit slow at first, but the ending is genuinely creepy and has some cool effects. Reminds me a bit of Haxan only not as old as that. It's also fairly short. Only in DVD that I've found.

Prize Pack #2 in the mail, enjoy Ed!
I've been making some good progress this year thanks to Netflix+having a desk job...3-4 movies in once day is nothing for some of you guys but is a major accomplishment for me!

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/
I am no way hitting the pace I did in other years but should hit 100 by end of the weekend. This year I am doing something totally different by basically planning the bulk of my viewings around the checklist. I relealized I haven't completed one of those since the first few years and with so many options on it now one could do their entire 100 off it pretty much.
This leads me to a question...
Do any of you have any challenge traditions? You know movies you ALWAYS add, nights you plan around the challenge, etc.?

I had a friend waiting for me when I got home yesterday, so I let her choose the theme movie. I called up all my options, and for some reason, she chose Uninvited from 1993. I received it as a double feature from Horror Pack a while back. It was truly terrible and also perhaps the worst looking Blu-ray in my collection. I was teasing her the whole time about what an awful pick it was.
But we decided to use that as inspiration for our own theme of the night: bad movies. So we watched the director's cut of The Carrier. It was still fun but the extra minutes seemed to really slow things down. I'll stick to the theatrical. We ended the night with Don't Go in the Woods. It turned into a fun night.

Goddamnit. I could’ve swore I had Frankenstein Myth set to record last night on TCM. But I don’t see it anywhere on my list. Well, for those who saw it, what was it like?

Yep.
Looks like it either had a last-minute name change or the Bloody Disgusting article I used for the schedule had the name wrong ...The Strange Life of Dr. Frankenstein.

1 - Every day is a multiple movie day no matter what. I’m blessed with a job that allows viewing, and a very understanding wife, so it’s easier for me than others I know. The subset on that specific day, and at least one other theme film, are the minimum requirement before I go to sleep.
2 - Pretty much stick to theme-compliant films every day. A huge collection and multiple streaming services make it pretty easy to find enough options that I’m excited about viewing, yet still hit the theme.
3 - The main exception to the theme-centric rule is the first week when I’m obsessed with finishing the checklist. I sort of hate the checklist. I know I sort of created it, but it being there at the beginning of the month just stares daggers into my soul until I complete it. Except for the subset choice and one other theme film, I just hit that checklist super hard the first week, researching options that satisfy multiple checks. Finished on the 4th this year, which is probably not the fastest ever.
4 - Plan family-friendly films and episodes on the rare nights my wife and I are home together. One of us is usually working that evening, or me early the next morning, or we’re driving our daughter back and forth to places, so nights together are quite rare. But she loves the Peanut specials and Muppet movies, and “light and fluffy” films, so I try to be nice.

It doesn’t look that unpopular, the first three being the best is fairly universal. I’m intrigued by how many put the Zombie films above the very bottom, and his second seems to be rising on these sort of lists. Personally, my first and second reactions to his versions were that throwing monkey poop in a film canister would be a better film. But I almost want to give them another try. Actually, I know I’ve tried his first Halloween multiple times, hating it more each time, but perhaps have only tried the second once. Is it self-contained?

Not all that strange, except for #4 which I assume refers to the 2nd Rob Zombie film. You don't have the first Zombie film listed. Maybe that was supposed to be #4 and his second film didn't even crack the top ten. That would make even more sense to me.

No but my distance from my last viewing of the first one may have helped.

Just finished The Houses October Built...gotta' say, this is probably the nail in the coffin on my tolerance for the found footage genre.

Had more of an arthouse day...
Possession (1981), first time viewing, that seems like an impenetrable film that I will need to re-watch. The martial discord first part was good and it really seemed to jump the shark. I'm adding that one to the 'revisit with supplements after the challenge' pile. I can see how this might have influenced Clive Barker.
Franco's Succubus was disappointing. I can be a fan of Franco's odd fever dream stuff and he has some prime eurosleaze but it does seem like he tends to so heavily repeat the same themes that with some of his vague plots it can feel like a remake of a film he himself did better before, Lorna the Exorcist IV. I think Succubus might be my leave favorite Franco so far - he does get a lot more arthouse in this one and a lot less lurid but it was kind of a bore and some of it a bit too campy. The idea of a sexualized female who may or may not be a demon controlled acting of her own free will or controlled by an outside force preying on those attracted to her seems ripe, but not here.

Happy Death Day was a great surprise. Hadn't heard about it before. Seeing so many horror flicks takes a lot to impress me these days but this one did. Fun film.

My highlight yesterday was watching Trilogy of Terror (1975) on the new KL blu ray. I know I saw it long ago, but all I remembered about it was the killer Zuni doll. There are 3 stories here, all featuring Karen Black. Three different creepy tales about women and sexuality/repression. I loved that theme and Karen Black was terrific. Sort of a gothic actor showcase. In the first story, "Julie", she plays a buttoned-up college professor. A male student gets it in his head to seduce her and appears to blackmail her into depravity. In the second story, she plays a super conservative woman who rails against her licentious sister. In the 3rd story a woman oppressed by her mother buys a Zuni doll for her boyfriend and it ends up coming to life and stalking her. Twist endings on all three. Vintage horror goodness!
I hope more TV movies are given blu ray treatment. There are so many good ones that are only available in super low res on YouTube, if at all. The visuals on this blu ray are just OK, not super high res, but I'm sure it was the best they could do with the source material.

Trilogy of Terror is a key cog in my becoming a horror fan. Pretty sure I was 9 and saw it as it originally aired. It was re-aired on TV often, and became a favorite. I was too young to really appreciate the first two segments for many years, but oh that third segment. There have been at least two DVD releases that I’ve enjoyed for years, might have to get the BD.
