I took off today to get a jump start. Started with Cat People and Curse of the Cat People. Simon makes the first film. The second really is a very tame family drama. Each time I watch it my opinion of it drops.

That was a very unique movie. I enjoyed it, but it's not for everyone. I love how little the movie attempts to explain what's going on with the villain. Apparently the director's original version of the ending was even more vague.

Got an email from Severin today about the limited edition blu Blood Island Collection (BRIDES OF BLOOD, MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND, BEAST OF BLOOD, & TERROR IS A MAN), so I went ahead and bit for the box set. I've seen trailers for one or more of them, so it's not exactly a blind buy. Won't be here until November, though, so I'll crack the box for the next Challenge.

That box set is a must own. the commentaries by Sam Sherman are gold.

Thought Bigfoot vs DB Cooper might be bearable schlock, it had Linnea Quigley listed in the credits after all! But it turns out that she was barely a cameo, and voice only at that! The rest of the film was maybe 10% first person shots of “Bigfoot” spying on shirtless men, 5% laughable action of Bigfoot clawing said shirtless men, and 85% shirtless men dressing and posing with guns and showering. Nothing explicit, but this was obviously the non-porn version of a gay porn film. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but not at all what I was expecting going in.

I too watched a David DeCoteau film today, The Frightening. It lacked bigfoot but had ample shirtless young men. Not quite as overt as Bigfoot vs DB Cooper, though.

I just don't "get it" myself. I've never been a huge fan of this, either. I don't even have any trouble sitting through them. I don't have a weak stomach, but I fond most of the exploitation stuff sacrifices good story for shock value. Not my thing, but to each their own, I suppose.

First night last night was a dud for me. Dressed to Kill has never been a favorite, I thought Mandy was terrible, and The Toybox was really, really dumb (though I wasn't expecting high quality in a movie starring Denise Richards and Mischa Barton about a possessed RV). Tonight, I decided to watch a few favorites as well as the subset pick. The Burbs is a movie I could watch over and over again and I'm currently watching Night of the Living Dead, which is classic.

I kicked the festivities off with the classic Tumbling Doll Of Flesh (1998).This one is a brutal Japanese sickie along the same lines as the Guinea Pig series and August Underground. You won't find much of a story here, just body parts being removed and blurred out Japanese genitalia.

I'm impressed with how well Night of the Living Dead still holds up. I can never pick a favorite from Romero's original Dead trilogy and it always ends up being the last one I watched. Night is full of social commentary and maintains a near constant feeling of dread. This is one classic that deserves that status. And the Criterion blu-ray looked excellent.

I satisfied the theme with the subset choice, and was going to skip NotLD this year. But I snapped out of it and just had to celebrate the 50th. So much on this Criterion release one could fill a weekend; I’ll devour it all someday.

I watched the Rifftrax version tonight. I wanted to watch it for the theme but I've seen it so many times. The Rifftrax one was funny and a nice change of pace. :-)

Also watched Lifeforce (just ok for me) and Dead & Buried, which I loved.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. I’ve watched a few things for the Challenge tonight, with one of our remaining boxers in bed with me. First was a first time view, on SyFy, the Nicholas Cage vehicle, Drive Angry 3D. I don’t know if it would be considered a great movie, but I actually enjoyed it. I followed up with a sitcom, the Halloween episode of Everybody Hates Chris , on MTV2. And I just finished an episode of Paranormal Survivor that was sitting on my DVR. One of the encounters was a Hag haunting a single mother.

Laddaland is so far probably the scariest movie I've seen this month (all 26 hours of it so far at least) and balances suburban angst with terror; if people need a Thailand based film to consider for the checklist you could do worse. Some imagery is cliche and economic anxiety elements overexaggerated but overall it has more melodrama and weight than average.

I'm getting off to a *very* slow start. My son and his family are in town this week so I'm spending most of my free time playing with his kids (ages 2, 4, & 6) or playing board games with him and my oldest grandson (daughter's kid - he's 15). We played "Blood Rage" tonight - no, it's not gory... it's about Viking conquests and dying gloriously when Ragnarok appears at the end of eras.

Anyway... I started last night with a single movie: Messiah of Evil. I've only seen MC P&S versions before and wasn't sure I wanted to spend upwards of $25 on a BR copy so when a used DVD (the Code Red SE) for ~$12 came up I purchased a copy. I enjoyed it much more in this superior DVD version but that Code Red version is pretty good so I don't think I "need" the upgrade.

Tonight is a first time viewing of Fulci's "City of the Living Dead." This one is the older, 2007, Blue Underground release.

Disney's Hocus Pocus and Nightmare Before Christmas are each $4.99 at iTunes right now. It's probably a misprice. They should be $9.99. So grab them quick.

Bummer. I ordered the new Nightwing/Shadow of the Hawk blu ray and planned to watch Nightwing and Bats for Jawsploitation. (someone else's suggestion in a previous thread). But the Nightwing blu won't be out til Oct 16th. I'll have to substitute.

For some reason, I had my theme nights order all screwed up. Maybe they changed after the first iteration. Just had to re-org my excel to match the subset list in the thread. Screwed up a few of my pre-orders which are coming out during Oct but it's all good!

Undeadcow has already mentioned a Thai film but I'm still going to throw in my recommendation for Phobia 2 streaming on Netflix. It's an anthology and so it's uneven as you would expect but I found something good in every story and really liked most of them. It's a good way to get one of the foreign language films if you don't speak Thai.

I saw that announcement on DVD Drive-in! and thought it sounded interesting. Certainly worth consideration. I own a of Terror is a Man, which is not bad... not great but not the worst either. It reminds me quite a bit of The Island of Dr. Moreau in its overall theme. I don't think I've seen any of the other 3 movies in the set.

The Maus, available on Netflix, is well made; nicely ambiguous with hints at terror mixing machismo and paranoia and a dash of sly situational humor played straight. It had me reviewing Bosnia War details because it's very relative to that conflict but a very tense character based horror film. The ending is a bit of a head scratcher but leaves you thinking.

I'm planning on checking out Phobia 2 on Anthology day. I can't decide if I like that Netflix has so many oddball foreign films or if they're just cheaper filler for the catalog (so many end up lukewarm at best but finding a gem sometimes makes it worth it). Edit: This sounds biased against films just because they're foreign, but I like foreign films and ultimately it's probably a good thing these are on Netflix since it's not like there's any chance of finding them anywhere else which goes to show how limited popular cinema and mass media is.

Anthology films I usually enjoy but every year I end up feeling like there are not that many of them; then a Phobia 2 comes along.

I'm leaning toward Chillerama (2011) tonight, though The Nightmare (Der Nachtmahr) (2015) on Shudder is also on my radar. Either way the movie will be followed by an episode of Shiki and maybe an episode of Night Warriors: Darkstalker's Revenge: Alpha or Iria: Zeiram the Animation (depending on which I find first).
