The "Rules"
</td></tr></tbody></table>

</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#76eec6">
What is This Thing?

Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to watch 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#668b8b">
Creating a List.

As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior (possibly sooner!) to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc.

The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 35 to 60. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The date for list completion is November 15.
The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!
</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#cdaf95">

What Counts?

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB.
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):

30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

Trailer Compilations count.
Longer Comps (4+ hours) = 1 entry for every 2 hours
</b>

A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLICATED EXPLANATION:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

<table border="25"><tbody><tr> <td bgcolor="#B0B0B0">
Spoiler:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
(Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show)

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.

</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#98a8a8">
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray via Playstation VR, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Virtual Reality, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Amazon Fire TV, Hulu, Youtube, Pay-per-view, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with obnoxious on-screen graphics and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.

</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#76eec6">
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.

- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple  / :thmbsdwn: or one word description.

Create a list in advance of what you plan to watch utilizing a site such as:
iCheckMovies | Listal

If you're indecisive and can't decide what to watch next copy/paste your titles into the List Randomizer (via random.org).

If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.
Increase your coffee consumption.
Insomniac? Use your disadvantage to your advantage!
Work from home? Ditto.
Save the supplemental material for November!
Boredom setting in? Watch another movie!
Stay within your comfort level and try not to get too caught up in the numbers.
ENJOY YOURSELF!

Extend the conversation by joining our Facebook Page.
It's fairly non-intrusive - basically it lets you know about the upcoming giveaways, new threads posted, etc.

Also, be aware that very few subscribers are getting posts from the page due to Facebook being one greedy bastard.
If you hover your mouse over the "Liked" button and click 'Get Notifications' this should fix the problem.

Chronological Horror Years Faceoff - Chapter 6

1943 (Diamond) Vs. 1968 (Gold) Vs. 1993 (Silver)

Spoiler:
<iframe width="400" height="150" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yooaYum13SM" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Son of Dracula dates the original Count Dracula as being destroyed in the 19th-century, when the original novel was set.

The following year, the Dracula-related series continued with House of Frankenstein in 1944, and House of Dracula in 1945,
both of which starred John Carradine as the original Count Dracula.
The famous arrival of Dracula's coffin by train was reprised in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948).

While Brewster and Lazlo speculate that he might be a descendant of the original Dracula, congruent with the film's title,
Katherine tells Frank that "he is Dracula". However, he is described as his descendant in the 1943 press kit.

This is the first Universal Dracula film to take the Count out of Europe and bring him to America.

You can start in 5 days. Plenty of Criterion horror content.

Heck, you can start today with Animation horror. Or any day of the year!

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I was reading over last year's planning thread, and I saw a discussion between Trevor and a few others that I wanted to raise again.

Trevor was arguing that there should be some wildcard leeway for subset picks:

Originally Posted by Trevor (Post 13148873)
Definitely agree that we need at least two options for alternates in qualifying for the theme and subset list checklists. If someone works a 24 shift and misses one day of viewing out of 31, they shouldn't be penalized in missing both lists.

Maybe have the subset and theme nights of Criterion and Comedy count as wildcards? So one could miss two of the 31 proper days of October, but still be counted as completing both lists. This could be in addition to the theatrical wildcard and whatever else we have or implement.

The discussion went on from there. Here's a link:
https://forum.dvdtalk.com/13148873-post405.html

On the con side was the concern that not enough people participate in the subset movie discussion threads as it is, so giving leeway there might dampen participation further. Trevor argued that it should *help* participation since it's currently and all-or-nothing deal, which might make people just give up and not do the subset.

Another argument against the change ran along the lines of "it's supposed to be hard."

I wanted to raise this discussion again, for what's worth. You can all ignore me since I'm a relative newbie (last year was my first Oct and Christmas challenge). But my thoughts on good reasons to allow a wildcard to two with the subset list is:

1. Just watched it. I watch a ton of horror. I don't mind rewatching films I haven't seen in a while. But if I *just watched* a movie, I don't want to watch it again. So my options are to give up on the checklist because of that one movie -OR- put it on and half ass watch it just to get it checked off (which is the sort of grunt work that's just dumb).

2. Some people may have a strong reason not to watch one movie. For example, some people will simply never watch Martyrs or Wolf Creek because "torture-porn". Or they may have a reason they will never watch a certain actor, or they legit get panic attacks over spiders or whatever.

I think Trevor has a good point that if people decide they can't/won't watch one or two movies on the subset list, they may give up on it entirely and simply do their own thing. This decreases participation for all the other subset movies. Even with 2 wildcards, there are 29 movies you'd have to watch on the subset list, which is still quite a challenge and will push people to watch movies they wouldn't have picked for themselves.

SUBSET RULE SUGGESTION:
2 subset wildcards where you can sub 1 or 2 movies from this year's subset list with another film from past year's subset lists -or- the Criterion/Comedy picks.

We have that great list of past years' picks. Would be nice to use it for something like this.

ETA: Since there are already 3 wildcards (for watching non-horror or watching shorter episodes), this could be added an an option under those same 3 wildcards so that the number of wildcards stays the same? If people want it harder.

I think this sounds pretty good. I've been trying to get the wifey more involved in the challenge, and I think this would help us reach that goal. I'm trying to watch from a more diverse pool, but there are a few titles that have turned her completely off.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 14th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

Another awesome banner Chad  excited for this challenge to begin as always especially since I saved pretty much all the super talked about horror films or new releases this year like Hereditary, A Quiet Place, The Strangers: Prey At Night, Incident In A Ghostland, Terrifier, The Meg, etc. just for this & managed to avoid spoilers for most part as well which is a feat in itself. Also exciting to see a skyrocket in a bunch of horror or mystery/thriller tv shows coming this fall such as The Haunting Of Hill House and Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina on Netflix, I tend to watch an episode or so of those after watching some horror films each day. Noticed that there is quite a lot of book to movie adaptations this fall makes me want to read more of them in addition to watching it’s film adaptation which I haven’t done in past challenges, so many upcoming adaptations as well such as Bird Box and I Am Thinking Of Ending Things. Also noticed amazon prime has some hard to find titles such as Ghostkeeper which I’ve always been curious about but never watched elsewhere due to needing subtitles being hard of hearing, hopefully those titles continue to stay up throughout October (side note - wish some of the more obscure horror titles like tv horror films on dvd or streaming rentals had subtitles or captions major bummer as I think I’d enjoy the older 70s/80s tv horror movies quite a bit).

Just a heads up there's a 15% eBay code PREGAME15 good until 10 PM PST.

It goes well with the Blowitoutofhere 15% off 4+ items or 15% off 2 items (box sets) promotion. Quite a few horror titles.

Having problems for this years challenge. Lost my best TV and my region free Blu-ray player to a lightning surge.
Plus my computer. We were away on vacation when it happened. So it’s going to be extra tough signing in and listing titles this year. I will do the best that I can. But i’m a bit handicapped at the moment. Hopefully i’ll get things straightened out by start up. But can’t guarantee it.

Awe yeah, it's almost that time of the year! I watched 82 last year, a new record for me. Not sure how I'll do this year but I can't wait.

I watched a Rob Zombie movie to complete the subset challenge one year. There shouldn't be susbstitutes.

I agree almost entirely, which is why my version was very limited. Allowing a substitution to include any past subset film is too broad.

My reasoning, iirc, was something like this: Person A watches the 31 October date subset films, posts nothing in discussion threads, but gets full credit for both the subset and the theme checklists. Person B watches 32 of the 33 total choices (adding the bonus Criterion and Comedy dates), posts discussion in all the threads, but misses one day in the middle (due to working a 24 hour shift, or getting sick, or being opposed to non-legal sources, or whatever) and gets no credit for the subset and theme checklists. My idea was to allow just the already voted on subset choices to be wildcards to allow flexibility for people who run into a problem one or two days. As others have said, I think having a bit of flexibility allows people to not give up if they miss one, and creates an atmosphere of more participation. And my severe limitations on this flexibility may appease the purists who want it to be hard or not really different from previous years.

So you're saying that only the Comedy and/or Criterion picks can replace 1 or 2 movies on the 31 subset list? This is good for me as well.

In terms of the subset list I thought the flexibility was that you can watch the subset films on any day of the month. If you miss a subset film you can always catch up and watch it another night, which is something that happens to me all the time.

I just see people using a substitution as an opportunity to skip something they're not interested in: "I'm not into horror comedies so I'm going to skip Tucker and Dale and watch Silence of the Lambs instead." Which goes against the spirit of the subset challenge, which is to force us out of our comfort zones and force us to give films a shot that we might not otherwise.

If it's something that a lot of people would think improve the challenge, it's worth discussing, but I imagine everybody that participates in that subset challenge winds up watching something they're not excited about.

Yes, the exact day thing only applies to themes, but there are more reasons than timing to miss a subset film.

Yes, but I’m still watching at least 31 of the specific subset films. Why would you watching just the inner 31 subset films be superior to me watching 32 of the 33?

I think most wont really care one way or the other, but then most don’t even do the optional things. And if a few think it’ll help, and it doesn’t hurt anyone or have a valid argument against it, then maybe it’d be a nice rule to have available to help someone out of a jam?

Say you’re committed to watching them all, but then something happens in your life and that last day you’re jammed up with an emergency or a bad disc or no internet and you miss that last film you were saving to complete the subset. It’d be cool to breathe a sigh of relief because you had earlier watched the subset for day 0 and/or day 32.

I definitely an interesting aspect of the challenge that you end up watching a lot of films other people select that you would not normally watch. That would still be the case for at least 29 films. 31 if you count the group picks for Comedy and Criterion.

For me, it's more about not watching a film I just watched. Yesterday I watched Deranged and Cult of Chucky, for example. And we watched A Quiet Place last week, which will likely be on the challenge. I'll rewatch movies if it if comes to that, but it would be nice to be able to sub 1 or 2 of these. Trevor's suggestion of only allowing the Criterion or comedy picks to be substitutes would make it pretty minimal impact for the purists, I would think.

<shrug> It was only a suggestion. :-)

When are the subset picks likely to be final? I need to stop watching movies or only watch ones on the previous years' subset list!

Anyone else watching Castle Rock? It's awesome.

I totally agree with you. I've certainly watched films I didn't like or had already seen and didn't want to revisit many times. The fact that we allow you to watch on any day provides ample opportunity to complete this. You can watch all of them in a matter of days and be done with it.

The whole point is to get out of your comfort zone and encourage discussion. Keep in mind these movies were all chosen by challenge participants. So even if it's a title I have seen and didn't like, I feel like I should show that participant some respect and watch his or her selection. That's what I would hope for with my own selection.

And it's not always so bad to revisit. You might notice something you hadn't previously, might like it more. You can watch with a commentary or Rifftrax if available or an alternate cut. You often do have options.

As for the themes, I still stand by that one as well. It's the only optional category that requires you to watch a film every day. That takes planning, commitment and even a little luck, and should be rewarded as such.

If this is all about providing more access to prizes, keep in mind there are trivia questions open to everyone as well as prize categories involving all participants.

I put more emphasis on the inner 31 because those are the only ones technically within the challenge. The only reason we have the crossover is for the challenge fanatics. Many (most?) of us don't even participate or have any interest in the other challenges.

And if that scenario that you described were to happen to me, I think my reaction would be something along the lines of, "oh, darn. I guess I'm not going to be able to complete this part this year." It's really not that big of a deal and wouldn't diminish my challenge experience whatsoever.

These are all optional things. If you're so stressed about completing all optional things that it would affect you that much for not completing something, maybe you shouldn't be trying to do them in the first place and should just enjoy the challenge. Or devote your free days to just the optional categories so you aren't scrambling at the end of the challenge.

I guess I'll go back to the fact that all of these are films chosen by us and should therefore be given the proper and equal respect. I think the Zombie film is a great example. Like many, I'm not a fan of his work. If given the chance, I imagine many of us, including myself, would have opted out of seeing it. Yet, as I recall, that film ended up being one of if not the most discussed film that year. And there was real discussion, not just people saying it sucked. Without "forcing" us to watch it, we might have missed out on a lot of good discussion, which is supposed to be the real point of this anyway. It's not supposed to be about just another check mark.

And I’d say that if you’re bothered by one or two people getting a break and watching a subset film not in your personal preferred 31, then maybe you’re the one too stressed and should maybe just relax ;) If it won’t affect you at all, ignore it and let others enjoy the flexibility.

And having a slight bit of flexibility will encourage more discussion.

I'm not bothered that people are "getting a break." I'm more bothered that our participants make selections and some of them will willfully not be watched. That's fine if you don't want to watch something, but I don't think you should be rewarded for choosing to skip a movie that one of our participants took the time and thought to select.

I understand; the comradarie of a select few of us choosing specific films and watching them together is a great part of this Challenge. But I just know how close I’ve come to missing a subset or theme due to life getting in the way. And if I can almost miss it with my extreme OCD and commitment to this Challenge, then it can hit anyone. It’s not necessarily purposeful or one willingly not watching one or more, it’s circumstances. A lot of people refuse to watch illegal links, this makes some of the subset choices very difficult and expensive to acquire in time. Many people work long shifts, people get sick, people are poor and can’t afford to rent or buy them all, all kinds of reasons. It should be hard, yes. It should foster community, of course. I think the compromises still satisfy those.

Also remember that at least 75% of the Challenge participants willfully choose to not watch any of the subset choices. And more than half the participants don’t post at all in any of the discussion threads. I’m hopeful that adding some flexibility will cause more people to “go for it” when it comes to the subset. Maybe there is no one in the Challenge that is just waiting for a sliver of flexibility before committing to the subset, but the advantage of possibility gaining someone is greater than the disadvantage of a few people being upset that the 31/31 is sacrosanct.
