I'll volunteer for a subset. Are there any particular themes that need more suggestions that I ought to focus on?

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Here's some recommendations, will add potential links next time I am on a PC (though I am based in Australia so will likely have less stream-based options than some of you!)

Cujo (1983) - NOTLD; Dogs, Bogs and Logs
Phantom of the Opera (1943) - Universal Monsters
Sometimes They Come Back (1991) - Video Stores
Salem's Lot (1979) or Once Bitten (1985) - Vampires
Scream 2 (1997), Scream 4 (2011) or Urban Legends (1998) - Horrorspondents; Slashers
Cat People (1942) - Criterion Crossover; Weres
Wolf (1994) or Wildling (2018) - Weres
Silver Bullet (1985) - Weres, Cheesy 80s movies
Little Dead Rotting Hood (2016) - Weres; Zombies
Freak Out (2004) or The Bride (1985) - Frankenstein/Mad Doctors
The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) - Mass Marathon of the Damned; Cheesy 80s Horror; Slasher
The Vanishing (1988) - Studies in Terror; European Passport (listed as Horror on The Movie DB, but not listed as Horror on imdb...)
Long Weekend (1978) - Studies in Terror; Blood on the Beach
The Toolbox Murders (1978) - Video Nasties
Grindhouse (2007) (Can watch either Planet Terror, Death Proof or both) - Modern Horror Films; IMDB Highest Rated Horror
Upgrade (2018) or Don't Breathe (2016) - IMDB Highest Rated Horror
You're Next (2011) - Rocktober

Let me know if there are any themes seriously lacking suggestions and I am happy to find more movies

Looks like we're almost there! Can't wait to get the final subset list so I can figure out what I have and what I need to get.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Looks like the theme category most in need of suggestions at the moment might be Chrono, so here are a few picks for each of the three years:

Phantom of the Opera (1943) [archive.org]
The Leopard Man (1943)
Son of Dracula (1943)
The Devil Rides Out (1968) [airing on TCM on 10/10]
Destroy All Monsters (1968) [filmstruck]
The Green Slime (1968)
Arcade (1993) [fullmoon]
Necronomicon: Book of the Dead (1993)
Jason Goes to Hell (1993)

And picks for some of the other themes that are a little lighter on options so far:

When Michael Calls (1972) - Halloween
Invitation to Hell (1984) - Halloween
The Beast Must Die (1974) - Video Companies Spotlight [fandor|snagfilms]
Demon Wind (1990) - Video Companies Spotlight [
prime prime
|https://www.shudder.com/movies/watch/demon-wind/4032001]
Psycho Beach Party (2000) - Blood on the Beach
Nightmare Beach (1989) - Blood on the Beach

(Since I aim for a high percentage of first-time watches each year, all of these are movies I haven't actually seen, so please don't kill me if my pick turns out to be horrible. )

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Progress report! I've been a bit quieter than usual for a reason. That's due to this year's subset picks being a) so damn good it's hard to make a final decision and b) for the first time in recent memory the theme to subset sync ratio is the best it's ever been at 27 to 25. In fact, I'm skipping over the usual next step of asking for re-picks entirely and going straight to the final round. That's listing the final (8, as of right now) themes left and asking the remaining volunteers to pick one and go from there.

In other words, for the two volunteers that have yet to give picks ...please hold off until I list those remaining unused themes. There's also the two (subject to change) that unfortunately didn't make it on to the current list. And, of course, we still need four more people to step up and volunteer.

The plan is to have it up tomorrow night.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

For the record I'm just throwing out suggestions and I don't care what subset I get (I'll even take the one no one else wants). I won't have a problem finding any movie that gets picked. I'm happy with whatever subset I get.

I definitely appreciate it, but I was able to use a title from your original subset suggestions.

I've been eyeing that Blu Ray of The Maze. I don't have a 3D set-up, but it still looks like an intriguing movie. Never heard of it before.

Speaking of recent blu-ray releases, it is a shame Candyman won't be released until November on Scream Factory but really excited for Trick 'r Treat to get released in that special collector's edition.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Sorry, I know I'm way behind in participation in the pre/building/talk/etc threads. Just a few weeks ago I moved from NC to IL to accept a job offer, so I'm a bit distracted this year. My big goal right now is to find my horror movies and get those sorted. Right now just drowning in a sea of boxes and packing paper.

Dick Laurent isn't dead.

And we're down to 3 subset volunteers needed...

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Since there's always a debate about video quality, I'll let the masses decide on this one...

clckworang selected Dr. Caligari (1989) as a subset pick. Personally I love the film and have been waiting for a Blu-ray (or DVD) release for years, but who knows if/when that happens. It never made it past VHS, and it's currently only available (to my knowledge) on YouTube in a 240p version:

Spoiler:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/67WvMNpW6uI" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And a much better quality version that's divided into four parts:

Spoiler:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HtCMTn8r8b4" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Is the video quality acceptable?

Same; I'm ok with Dr Caligari quality - in fact after skimming through parts of it I now HAVE to see it, looks pretty trippy. There are some interesting video store era films that never made it to DVD or blu-ray and it'd be a shame to cut those from subset and the lower quality is sometimes a nice throwback.

Almost forget -- for the remaining subset volunteers, here's what the current progress of the subset list is lacking ...if you're interested:

Spoiler:
Decades missing: 1930's, 1950's
No Asian horror films

Remember, it's spoilerized for a reason. Pick what you want to pick and don't feel this has to influence your decision in any way.

I would be happy to watch either of those links. What a bizarre looking movie! Pretty sure I would be too absorbed by the story to notice the quality before too long haha

I'm also ok with the Youtube links for Dr. Caligari. I've never heard of this and definitely want to see it now.

For what it's worth, there is a DVD release of Dr. Caligari, although it's not a great one. From what I understand, the owner of the film rights owns the adult website Excalibur Films. There's a DVD listed there. I have been told it's the only release of the film, but it's not much of a release. Still, it's something.

Just a reminder that this link is NSFW.
