I'm taking my son to see the new Ice Age film tomorrow evening. For anyone interested, I saw an AMC theater I visit from time to time advertise free large popcorn tomorrow for Stubs members. So Sci-Fi/Animation double credit, time with my boy and free popcorn. Can't beat that!

I look forward to kicking it off as soon as I get home tomorrow. And my flight gets in in the morning too. At the airport right now, as it's an early flight.

I know muppet movies count, but what about something like Farscape? It has a few muppet characters throughout. If it counts, I could continue watching the series from last month.

Well crap, I was thinking this started tonight, not last night.

Like most of my Animation Challenges I will start with a series and this year it will be Super Dimension Century Orguss which I saw 13 years ago. I'm looking forward to revisiting this series, watching some favorite shows and movies along with some first time views.

Same here. I was planning to squeeze in as many live-action things today before screening some anime sci-fi tonight.

I still haven't watched a Hong Kong fantasy yet, nor any Godzilla or Gamera.

Oh neat. I didn't realize it started at 12:01 AM, so was raring to go for this challenge to start at dusk. All the better that it is already active. I am looking forward to another fun, and productive for my animation backlog, challenge.

Alright! I need help picking a couple of crossover titles! Here's my qualifiers...
Book of Life 3D - (never seen)
Caroline 3D - (never watched in 3D at home)
Mr. Peabody and Sherman 3D - (never seen)
Wreck-It Ralph 3D - (not watched in 3D at home)
Clash of the Titans - (not watched on Blu-ray)
Scooby-Doo and Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery - (never seen)
Mirror Mask - (never seen)

Any suggestions?

Rigel is a main character and in most, if not all, episodes. Many (all? have to check) have Pilot as well with several featuring the character. Other than that there's quite a bit of CGI. I'd think it would count but don't know for sure.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman is really good. My sister insisted that I watch it with her despite my reservations, and I'm glad I did. Also, I like Mirrormask quite a bit.

Those are good points for sure. I would like to keep watching it this month because I didn't get very far into it last month like I had hoped to.

Thanks for the input! I'll throw one of those on right now.

I too thought I'd have to wait till midnight tonight, until I saw the post last night. Eager to start, I kicked off the Challenge as soon as I got home with a revisitation of Bee Movie, on HBO Family, that I hadn't seen in years.

The only one I haven't watched is Clash of the Titans. I'd say watch Book of Life, Caroline, Wreck-It Ralph, Scooby Doo, Mirror Mask, Clash of the Titans and Mr. Peabody in that order. Mr. Peabody wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either. I really enjoyed Book of Life. It was beautifully made. The visuals are awsome. Caroline is just such a good film, dark and mysterious. Read the book if you get a chance. Short kid's book, but Gaiman is a great writer.

Ha! I kind of had the opposite reaction. It was watchable for me, but I didn't really like it.

I have not watched this, so go on your gut. Someone said there is a lot of CGI as well as the puppets. Rule of thumb is 50%. If you think 50% of the show is either one of those two, it can count. If you watch and it isn't that much, you do get one wildcard for the challenge.

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I just finished the two part episode of The Transformers, 'Dinobot Island', and noticed a couple things I never noticed as a kid. First, since this was the first of the episodes that introduced new characters, almost all of the new characters introduced in Season 2 got some screen time. Second, and something I really enjoyed seeing, while most kids probably just thought of this being cowardly Starscream, I find the fact that he didn't want to upset the chronological balance of Dinobot Island, for fear of causing dire consequences, merely him showing his scientific side, since in the Season One episode, 'Fire In The Sky', when he told Megatron the story of how Skyfire was on Earth, he said how he used to be a scientist.

If anyone is interested and gets the El Rey Network, there is a Puppet Master marathon going on right now, with movies 1-5. I'm watching the first one right now.

Just finished my first watch of the challenge, The Lord of the Rings: The Original Animated Classic. I definitely prefer the live action ones, but this wasn't bad. I could certainly see a few spots where Peter Jackson "borrowed" a scene from. I do wish they had been able to finish the third movie, though.

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

Tonight I will start finishing off the back-half of the third season of The Adventures of Puss in Boots and pick some movie from Netflix or Prime that I've been holding off on for the Challenge. I think I'll try to squeeze in one or two shorts a day between tv/movies; I've got a lot to pull from, UPA (Magoo/various), Warner Bros, Disney, DePatie-Freleng (Pink Panther/Inspector), Universal (Woody Woodpecker), Paramount (Popeye) and MGM (Droopy -- still no Tex Avery box set).

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I have a small pile of unwatched animation that I'm going through before going onto other things. I have The Croods, Inside Out, Zootopia, Mulan II, and Back to the Future: The Complete Animated Series. I've seen them all except for Mulan II but just not my copies of them. After those I plan on just playing it by ear and see what catches my attention.

I rented that a few times as a kid and hated it each time. I'd get bored and never finish it.

I saw it when it was on Cartoon Network to promote the first movie. I hated it. But I always loved Return of the King.

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

It definitely wasn't my favorite and I own it but probably won't watch it again (I got it clearance'd out somewhere so not a big investment). I got distracted by the shakiness of the animation-because of the rotoscoping maybe? But at times I really did get involved in the show even though I had just watched the extended versions earlier last month. So, glad to get it off the to watch list, but for sure won't be the highlight of this month's watchings! ;)

I tried a couple of times to watch that one after it came out and over the intervening years. Each time I've given up on it for the same reason as Peepers... I get bored as they're just not that good. Part of it is the animation style. In spite of that I purchased a copy some time back when I found one at Big Lots for $3. I *may* give it another go this year but honestly expect it to still be in the unopened pile come September 1.

I'm currently watching S1 of Shaun the Sheep (the recently re-released WS version). It's a hoot! :)

I'm getting closer to finishing Superman: Red Son Motion Comics. It's shaping up to be an interesting story. I might have to get the Elseworlds comic book some day.

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I started off yesterday with finally putting the final two episodes of Hellsing Ultimate out of their misery. With the staggered release and me sitting on this blu-ray for a long time, it had been years since I watched the prior 8 episodes. I guess I wasn't overly motivated since I had read the comics so knew how things would end pretty much. It was an enjoyable ride though.

Today, I started watching another series from my anime blu-ray backlog in From the New World. So far so good through six episodes with them setting up an interesting setting and dynamics. We'll see how it goes from here. Other than that, I have just been keeping up to date with some of my airing or recently finished anime shows that I watch streaming.

My goal for the challenge is 100 entries, but with a ton of stuff in my to watch pile and my streaming backlog this year, it would be nice to do closer to 200 episodes or movies.

That too. I've never been a fan of that style.

I finished disc 1 of The Clone Wars season 2 last night. I watched this season a year ago, so I still vaguely remember the episodes. The only reason I'm rewatching them is because I bought the first two seasons in the fancy book format but then saved money getting the rest of the series in one box set, so I'm rewatching the first couple seasons to make sure the discs are fine.

Then I took a break to watch Minions. It was ok. Never been much of a fan of them and I don't see myself watching it again. The mini-movies weren't great. I liked the one with the family but even that wasn't great.

I'm jumping back to Clone Wars and for my next break it's going to be the Shaun the Sheep movie.
