The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge

8th Annual (2015) Here

Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.

3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions (theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

How to win a prize

There's 1 way to get an entry:
Participate by watching at least 1 item

Audio:

Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio

I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.

If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.

1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.

1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.

3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.

1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

*Exception:* Due to interest and a very good argument, this year the Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.

Checklist:

Spoiler:

*Watching enough shorts or TV to count as one entry, you can use that one entry as a check on the checklist, as long as each of them count for whatever you're checking. You can mix and match what you've seen to make a check, they all don't have to be grouped together as a single entry on your watch list.

I'll get the list thread up a bit closer to the end of the month. I heard someone was asking around where the thread was, so thought I'd throw it up. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions for the check list!

I thought of Charlton Heston, Vincent Price, and Milla Jovovich for actors.

Second for Charlton Heston. Price was more horror than sci-fi, though.

I'd add
Hugh Marlowe
Kenneth Tobey
Faith Domergue
Sigourney Weaver

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Disscusion Thread

I thought of another actor for the checklist, Akira Takarada. He did quite a few Godzilla movies, both Showa and Heisei era.

Along with the Animation Challenge, this is my favorite challenge, and I have already caught myself watching some sci fi to whet my appetite for this challenge, including checking out the new Voltron on Netflix. From what I saw of the pilot episode before Netflix stopped playback, it looks to be quite a good reboot, and I enjoyed the fact that GoLion names were used for some of the things, like Zadak, instead of Yurak, and Planet Altea.

Thanks for the suggestions! Is there anyone I should add to the "He's Dead, Jim" section?

If anyone has a Roku, Tubi TV is a good source for sci-fi movies and TV shows. There's also some free channels that have more than the typical public domain sci-fi movies.

I just started a Sci-Fi movie sheep game. Anyone wanting to get into the mood for this upcoming challenge, and have a little sci-fi discussion, is welcome :)

Looks intriguing. I might give it a whirl.

Would Tarzan movies be considered Science Fiction?

I could see someone trying to argue fantasy, but no, they're pretty firmly action adventure.

Like Trevor said, they don't count. The few I've watched aren't really either, maybe fantasy, but I'm willing to judge on a case by case basis.

One or more of the Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs had sci-fi elements, but not the films. One of the books was "Tarzan at the Earth's Core," but it was never filmed. The prequel novel, "At the Earth's Core," was filmed (in 1975) and is sci-fi.

One of the Tarzan films, TARZAN'S DESERT MYSTERY, had dinosaurs, but they were just lizards tricked up to look like dinosaurs and were taken from another movie (ONE MILLION B.C.) and there was no comment about why they were there. Another film, TARZAN'S MAGIC FOUNTAIN, had a search for a fountain of youth, but I don't recall if the fountain was real or just a myth.

IMDB lists Tarzan's Magic Fountain as Fantasy and Tarzan's Desert Mystery as Sci-Fi, so they count, but all of the other Tarzan films are just tagged as Action/ Adventure. There are also other ERB-inspired movies that will fit the challenge, like The Land That Time Forgot, The People That Time Forgot, and John Carter.

Thanks for the input guys. I didn't think they would be but wanted to make sure

I've only watched a handful of Tarzan movies: One Weismuller, Greystoke, etc. I don't even think I've seen the Bo Derek one. Some of the comics have been more fantasy-like, with the city of Opar and stuff.

One of the old ones had a giant spider monster, which may be why sci-fi is listed as a genre in some places. But even then ... not sci-fi.

Have you seen the first two Weismuller movies? Those two are the best. And its a bit startling to see some of the things that pre-code Hollywood could get away with (like nudity).

I just checked the new Tarzan that is coming out, and that one is action/adventure only as well.

I forget which I watched, but I remember a scene of a nekkid actress underwater. Pre-Code is right.

That would be Maureen O'Sullivan (and her body double) in Tarzan and His Mate (1934). People may not remember which Tarzan movie, but everyone remembers that scene.

I remember both. I watched Tarzan movies *every* Saturday afternoon on the "local" CBS affiliate (WREC, Memphis, TN) when growing up and saw every one *dozens* of times each. They actually aired the *uncut* version. I have no idea how/where they got this version but I know I saw those scenes as I saw it on another station years later and immediately noticed the scene was missing. This same station also aired the original, uncut, Frankenstein where the monster threw the girl in the water (a scene that had been cut from other prints).

Obviously that's the only scene I remember.

If anyone wants to watch a great pre-code movie that does fall under sci-fi ... for the last Halloween challenge I saw the 1931 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the first time. I was really impressed by how visceral it was.

Island of Lost Souls is another great one from that time. Even after all this time, I think they're both the best movie adaptations of their respective classic novels.

BobO'Link 06-17-16 03:14 PM

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Disscusion Thread

^I'll second both of those. They're great films. Island of Lost Souls (1932) is one of my all-time-favorite films and still disturbing: "Are we not men?"

I just renewed my sub to Con TV on Amazon Prime. It has a good selection of sci fi movies and TV shows.
