Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

Just as a quick recap these are the current suggestions for changes/additions to the check list:

Charlton Heston
Vincent Price
Milla Jovovich
Kenneth Tobey
Faith Domergue
Akira Takarada
Christopher Lloyd
Patrick Stewart
Peter Weller

Director: Luc Besson

Subgenres: Disaster Films

Anton Yelchin to the He's Dead Jim category.

There were a few doubles that were already added to the lists so I removed those from this reminder.

Any objections to move Alan Rickman to the He's Dead, Jim category?

There was one objection to Vincent Price being added. I went through his filmography and there are a few fantasy/sci-fi movies and shows but not a ton. He really did focus more on horror. Anyone else have any pros/cons before I make a final decision?

I'd say no on Price

I'm good on Rickman, and no on Price.

I'd say yes on Vincent Price. He's easily been in enough sf/f to qualify:

Night Gallery TV-F
Bionic Woman TV-SF
Time Express TV-F
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea TV-SF
Batman TV-SF/F
Science Fiction Theatre TV-SF
Scream and Scream Again SF
The Fly SF
Return of the Fly F
Master of the World SF
The Raven F
The Last Man on Earth SF
City in the Sea (War-Gods of the Deep) F
Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine SF
Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs SF
Dead Heat SF
Edward Scissor Hands F

It does look like there are enough choices for Vincent Price to be added. Just don't add to the number of actors/actresses that have to be watched!

coyoteblue beat me to it! :)

I'm on the "yes" side. There are all these and quite a few more. A somewhat informal count using the advance search at IMDB shows ~20 *movies* that are either SF or Fantasy and dozens of TV episodes. Sure, lots of the product is also tagged Horror but it still qualifies.

I revise my answer! I say yes to Vincent Price! I had forgotten how many SF movies he was in.

Ditto! I have all three VP box sets from Scream Factory, so I'll be cracking those open.

Way to rub it in! I waited too long to buy them and don't have the funds for a OOP purchase. I'm definitely fine with Price being added to the list. Are we just adding people to the list or are the new people replacing others on the list?

I need to buy II & III lest I suffer the same fate.

That's a good question. It is getting a bit long. Any suggestions for people to remove if I do so?

Samuel L. Jackson
Scarlett Johansson
Harrison Ford
Richard Denning
Sir Cedric Hardwicke
Ted Cassidy

Maybe try to come up with some sort of rotation strategy. Two years on, two years off...

I own, and am happy with, the (pressed) DVDs of his output but "need" III for a pressed copy of Master of the World (I refuse to purchase the MOD). I keep hoping it'll go on sale but am afraid to wait too long as that first one seemed to sell out rather quickly.

I had a couple possible pictures for my list, but I can't change them to jpgs, oh well.

You should be able to open the picture in Paint (assuming you're using a Windows PC), then just click on "File," then "Save as," and click on "Jpeg Picture." That'll change it from a gif or png file to a jpg. PM me and I'll be glad to help.

Thanks for the tip. That clears things up. I'll try it next time I'm at my computer. I'm on my phone right now.

Or download and install "Irfanview" - a freeware image editor that's vastly more powerful than Paint. Just make sure to look for those piggybackware junk apps that want to co-install and uncheck the default "install" box for them during the installation. You may need to select "custom" install to be sure you get them deselected.

I just picked up III during the B&N 40% sale last week stacked with a 20% coupon, so I paid $33. I'm surprised that it didn't include Theatre of Blood--maybe Shout is saving that for IV.

Good suggestions, I'd also delete
Lena Headey
Callum Keith Rennie
Winona Ryder
Ray Milland
Gina Torres

Actors to add to the list:
Morgan Freeman
Gary Oldman
Peter Jason
Julianne Moore
Brian Thompson
Hugh Jackman
Keanu Reeves
Famke Janssen
Will Smith

Thanks for the suggestions! If anyone else thinks of any to add or would like to be considered for removal, please post by Sunday night so I have a bit of time to go through the list before the challenge starts on Thursday. Thanks!

How does the Battlestar Galactica (2004) series hold up?

I haven't seen it yet and was thinking about watching it for the challenge. But then I noticed it's 75 episodes (+2 movies). That'll take up most of the month and won't leave much time for other movies.

So is it still one of the best sci-fi shows ever, or was it overhyped? Are all four seasons worth watching? Or does it fall apart in later seasons?

I haven't seen much of it, but I enjoyed the early part of the show I saw. I might watch a few episodes here and there myself.

If anyone gets MeTV and has a DVR, Island of Lost Souls is on Svengoolie tonight. Just thought I'd let folks know who are interested.

Since we're sharing viewing suggestions, if you have a roku, B-Movie TV shows sci-fi films Wednesday nights at 8:00 & 10:00.

They also show them randomly all during the week, but it's a streaming channel and they don't publish a schedule, so it's like opening a surprise present every two hours. Maybe it'll be something you want to watch, maybe not. I've gotten a little bit addicted to it.

Edit: They're playing Digital Man (1995) with Adam Baldwin and Ed Lauter, which I've never seen.

Thanks for the heads up. Roku is a veritable treasure trove of movies.
