Re: Last DVD you watched?

The first ten episodes from the third season of Cardcaptor Sakura while on vacation at my folks (not watching with them though, watching them 'after hours'). Eriol feels too much like a Harry Potter clone (before the books/movies hit the hype roof) but the more "Sakura" anime I watch the more tempted I feel to dive into "Tsubasa."

If you've read the 'HD Watching' thread you know I'm indoctrinating my father and stepmother into different-from-their-routine flicks (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/9914316-post1780.html). The only SD DVD in the list was watched last night and it was a bullsye: Truffaut's Jules and Jim (Criterion). After the first 20 or so minutes left my folks dizzy and confused (especially a handful of subtitles that went by way too fast) Jeanne Moreau jumped into the river and their attention became riveted. 90 minutes later they were dazzled and said they'd never seen anything like this in their entire lives (they're over 60 each). 'Le Toubleron' is now permanently etched in their minds, just like Constantine's "The 400 Blows" piano theme was after the saw that Truffaut masterpiece.

It's been a while since I posted in this thread. I've just been so busy lately... it can be a bit overwhelming.

Today, however, I had a nice break and got to enjoy Truffaut's Day For Night, and Allen's Love and Death. Both films are classics in my book, and are essential for any true cinema lover. Day for Night especially is one of my favorite films ever made about the art of film-making, and the wonder of cinema.

Seraphim Falls. How could I not be interested in a western starring Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan? The manhunt portions of the film were nicely done (though Brosnan's character probably should have died within the first ten minutes of the movie). The "story" side was a bit uninteresting. The landscape in New Mexico where they shot it looked gorgeous on DVD; I expect it would be even more impressive on Blu-ray.

Not sure how I missed ever seeing this movie. It was definitely entertaining.

10,000 BC. Perfectly adequate way to spend a Sunday night. Story was pretty ho-hum, but the movie looked very nice. I can somewhat excuse a bad story if they give me something nice to look at.

A Perfect Getaway.

3.5/5. An above-average thriller with strong performances from the cast. I saw the twist coming but it was more like, "How would they pull that off?" The answer? Surprisingly well.

Last night (5 January), my wife and I watched A History of Violence, which we'd never seen. We both loved it, and thought it was one of the better suspense movies we'd seen in a while. Plus, I love Maria Bello in everything I've ever seen her do, and this was a pretty daring performance for her. Very glad we finally watched this!
