Funny People BD

I understand why opinion is split on this film. It definitely rambles on the way to its destination, and the ending isn't particularly strong, but I think that's part of its charm. I liked the characters, liked spending time with them inhabiting that world, and wasn't ever bored even when the movie wasn't really going anywhere in particular. It's a pretty self-indulgent movie, but that doesn't make it a bad one. Also I thought the fight scene was particularly ell done and layered in a good deal of character with some pretty convincing 'comic fight' choreography.

The disc, on the other hand, had what looked like some serious video noise towards the beginning (not during the Adam Sandler home video stuff, after that) and featured automatic preview downloading from the Internet and wouldn't let me skip the previews during the first ten seconds or so of each. This serves only to make me angry and not want to rent or purchase the advertised movies. Stick the previews in a menu option.

Shanghai Noon

This is the kind of Hollywood crap I enjoy. Nothing about it is particularly great, but everything is just good enough to keep you watching. The writers of this movie went on to write the unwatchable Showtime with Eddie Murphy and Robert De Niro, and Herbie Fully Loaded, while the Director went on to make Showtime, Failure to Launch, and Marmaduke, so it's not clear why this film works as well as it does (It's not like Jackie Chan (in the U.S.) or Owen Wilson are strangers to making dreadful movies) but it's pretty much everything you could ask from a Jackie Chan movie called Shanghai Noon, except for maybe a little more martial arts action. It also seems completely forgotten. Not that it's great cinema, but it deserves to be a cable staple.
