Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I just discovered that Hulu has a more complete selection of Classic Doctor Who episodes than Netflix. While Netflix only has one story arc per season, Hulu has almost, if not all of them. I just finished the very first episode, 'An Unearthly Child'.

There was one fairly recent one (late 90s or early 2000s) that I heard about when it came out and meant to get when it came on DVD and then it went clear off my radar and I don't recall a thing about it. Do you have any idea which one that is?

Thanks.

That would be The Wesley's Mysterious File (2002) with Andy Lau as Wesley (Wisely). The movie's a dog, but given it's been over ten years since I first watched it, I suppose it deserves a revisit and re-evaluation. There are two from the early Nineties, that I've never seen, and don't seem available: Young Wisely (93) and Young Wisely II (Rebirth Of The Goddess) (94).

I'm not burnt out, but decided to take a day or two off the Challenge to avoid burn out. I'm going to focus on a combination of sports and documentaries for the next couple days. I'm doing this before I get burnt out to stop it ahead of time, as I've been hitting the challenge hard lately.

Maybe try and hold off from starting challenges early. I've noticed you've been starting a bit early on the last few and then get burned out before it's over.

When I get burned out, I sometimes try and find something that qualifies but is at the other end of the spectrum of what I got burned out on. You seem to have a sci-fi streak going, so why not switch to something from the fantasy realm. You remembered the first Nightmare on Elm Street was dark fantasy but also brought up Friday the 13th. One or two of those films might give you a qualifying break before getting back into the adventures of time traveling ancient aliens named Doctor Who.

My challenge update: If I keep up this pace, I'll have Dark Shadows done in October, which means I got through the series in a year since I started during the last Horror challenge. Right now I've gone through about 100 episodes in 15 days and I have 355 episodes to go. I'll probably still watch some during next month's challenge between animation challenge material, so maybe I'll be able to finish in September. The bonus features might still push me into October. There's a lot of discs of that stuff.

Isn't it about time for the animation discussion thread?

This isn't really breaking my routine. I don't do nothing but challenges anymore. I learned last Horror Challenge, that taking it slow helps keep the fun. I may do some dark fantasy though.

I've also been listening to Coast to Coast and Inception Radio Network too, just not listing them at all.

I'm fantasizing about my vacation to Oshkosh next week. Does that mean EAA Radio would count? jk.

I'm watching His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th right now, and at one point in the documentary, it is actually stated that the series is most definitely fantasy, as the killings themselves are more fantastic than grounded in real life.

Good luck! I looked at that collection when it came out and was amazed at how many discs are in it!

I have been focusing on the sci-fi one, but I can get the animation one up soon so people can start planning. I'm amazed at how fast this summer is flying by!

Ha! It probably would cover the science part, but not the fiction! Hope you have fun, it's sort of in my neck of the woods ('bout 3 hours from me). I've been to the museum/area around the festival but not the actual event. There's a nice outlet mall nearby if you want to get away...

Thanks, I'll look into it. There actually is a shuttle bus that takes you to the outlet mall, though never been there myself.

Watched Spring (2014) tonight (Amazon prime). A real treat. Been wanting to watch it since I heard about it at SXSW film. It lived up to my hopes, which is a really nice sensation. It's a...horror movie for romantics or maybe it's a romance for horror buffs. Either way it's a grown up romance...with tentacles.

I'm not familiar with all the new pokemon of the last 5 or 6 years, but I still enjoy seeing the show now and then. Just watched the Forest Champion episode of Pokemon: XY, on Cartoon Network.

I had a problem with the end of Ex Machina.

Spoiler:
Why would the helicopter pilot leave with Ava, a stranger, rather than the guy he came to pick up?

One show I always enjoyed was Destination Truth, from SyFy. I wish Netflix had more than just the fourth season though.

Good point; I wondered the same thing myself.

Spoiler:

Since we know Ava is able to lie and to manipulate men, I assume she spun a story to fool the pilot.

I like to listen to Coast to Coast AM, though I miss most of it, as I sleep most of the show away. Anyone else who listens to it, am I the only one who noticed that at least half the shows are more reality based? Another good all paranormal and UFO radio station, is Inception Radio Network, which is available on Roku.

That had crossed my mind. It would have been nice to have been let in on the conversation.

I always had to find places to download it but I haven't listened for a long time. I was more of an Art Bell fan and don't care too much about all the angels that Noory used to go on about. I can also live without reporting from Linda Moulton Howe.

There's still some random episodes that turn out to be really good. One episode was about people that said they were animals trapped in human bodies and another one about some company that does tours to look for leprechauns, gnomes, and fairies, was pretty funny.

You might be glad to know Art Bell is coming to Dark Matter network on July 20, and if you have Tune In, the channel is on there. One Coast to Coast the other night had a segment on marijuana of all things.

Sometines, a bit of ambiguity adds something to a film. like when Bill Murray whispered advice to Scarlett Johansson. What did he tell her? It's better to provide the answers ourselves.

Note to self: when creating an AI, be sure to add the 3 Laws to her software.

BTW, I strongly recommend checking out These Final Hours on Netflix. It's an extremely powerful film about a man trying to sort out priorities in the face of planetary extinction. The basic setup is that the Earth has been hit by an asteroid and a wave of fire is circling the planet. Australia has 12 hours left before it is incinerated. James, the protagonist, leaves the woman he loves to go get wasted at a party so he won't feel anything when the end comes. It's a brutal film that does not hold back, but I really liked it.

Watched The Cat (Lao Mao) (1992). The movie is truly wonky. My evidence:

Alice in Wonderland came up for discussion over at the Animation Challenge thread and that reminded me of a good off-beat version, Malice in Wonderland (2009). Worth a lookup.

Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I woke up early this morning, so decided to work on the challenge. Started the day by finishing an episode of Destination Truth that I still in the middle of the night, on Netflix. It dealt with a ghost hunt at Angkor Wat, and a search for Ogopogo, a lake serpent in Canada.

Here's another version of Alice in Wonderland that I like. It's a bit darker than the original, I think, but still fun for the family.

Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I've learned not to go completely by the randomness of what is on TV. I saw a lot of sci-fi on the Dish Guide, but none of it looked good right now. Looks like it's Roku or DVD.
