Perhaps it's time to retire the "most impressive list" category/prize. Or let's just not mess with the voting and give it to Surfinhank and/or SterlingBen ahead of time. Those guys put the rest of us to shame year after year. :D

I vote that we finalize checklist and subset pics several months in advance of the next challenge to give everyone time to buy it (hunt for lower prices). In fact we could have a OHMC deal thread where we look for deals on said movies. Might be just me being a cheap bastard but that is why I join this forum in the first place, for the deals!

I like that idea. I'm one who favors purchasing rather than streaming and that would be a nice solution.

I third this. I hate having to go to shady websites to view some of the choices.

+1 to liking the idea of solidifying subset/themes crazy early.

I'll post a few suggestions once I have a chance to mill things over. It'll be easier while horror is fresh on my brain and it makes sense for people to suggest some of their favorites from the challenge for next year.

I'd like to see more changes to sub-genres in the checklist and will make suggestions later. For one I suggest opening "Frakenstein" up to a more general "Mad Scientist," many of those are derived from Shelley's formula anyway (if not Mad Science would make a good new addition on it's own).

If it were up to me, I'd start the damn challenge at Dusk on Labor Day. :)

So solidifying things early is a-ok by me.

LOVE the early themes narrowing idea. I had the most fun with just focusing on theme nights this year.

I'm going to work on a list for the PREGNANCY HORROR.

Also, have we done ELEVATORS AND HIGH RISES? Some of those came to mind during the challenge. I feel like there's another combination in there for a good theme night.

Also one that came to me during the challenge: MOVIE HOUSE MASSACRES- DRIVE IN THEATRES
Films that are set at movie theatres or drive-ins, or have substantial scenes set therein. Surprised at how many there are. Another list I'd like to start compiling for the challenge via Letterboxd.

yet another. MOVIE-TIE INS. Horror films that have a book written based on the screenplay or a novelization. These were popular back in the day and I have an old FANGORIA issue that lists many.

I'd like to see "Radio Horror" added as an option to the checklist, the way "Literary Horror" is now. There are so many good radio dramas to choose from. Could also be expanded to audiobooks.

Good idea. I also tend to favour lumping listening to audiobooks with radio/audio, rather than with physically reading a book. (Not that I have anything against them, but I tend to think it's a different experience..)

Personally, I'd like to (continue to) see some 'staples' of the genre permanently attached to the actors/directors lists - e.g. Karloff, Price, Cushing & Lee - alongside the niche-r and more obscure. It's nice to be inspired by new names, but it can be terribly hard to track down anything they've been in to actually watch.

I can see the merit in discouraging competition or curtailing arguments but it seems like the person who watches the most stuff should automatically win some prize, if there are to be prizes.

We don't need to get the challenge shut down yet another year, even if it was only a temp shut down.

I can see this resulting in people going all out trying to get 300 watches and massive fights ensuing questioning the legitimacy of other lists and people getting butt hurt like in years past.

Yeah, even if the thread isn't in danger, I'd be against any incentive to watch the most. It just encourages cheating or making up numbers.

Maybe a new incentive could be one to encourage discussion or other forum participation?

How about just the lawn for Prom Night 2/3?

I like this idea--it levels the playing field to a certain degree. For instance, this year, I only got in 32 movies because I have a full-time job and a part-time job. I truly had only about three hours of anything resembling down-time from the time I got up in the morning until the time I went to bed. Under those circumstances, it's nearly impossible to get in more than a watch or two per day (except for weekends, naturally). Whereas watching a movie takes somewhere around an hour and a half, writing a comment about one, or replying to someone else's comment about one, takes only a few minutes. I know that I enjoy reading others' comments about the films they're watching, and I get a lot of leads for movies that I should watch from them. With more people discussing what they've watched, everybody wins.

Maybe the subset film checklist should not be to watch a film on that list but to COMMENT on a film to count a check, honor system such as it is.

As long as you watched a minimal amount of movies and participated in the threads a bit, I think random prizes does its job (and this is coming from someone who did not get a random prize this time around).

mightysparks 11-12-14 06:29 PM

re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2015 Horror Challenge

Yeah, I'm also against giving prizes to whoever watches the most. I think participation prizes would be much more relevant and would be more beneficial to the challenge (creating discussion) than someone just adding numbers to their list. Not sure how that kind of thing would work though. And as Spiderbite says, I think the random prizes do their job anyway.

I am, however, for finalizing the checklist etc way ahead of time, because it gives me more time to plan and I love planning :D But I know how much work goes into doing that, so it's not a big deal.

I watch movies and TV shows because I enjoy it. I use the challenge to help me organize what I watch, not to win a prize (thanks Chad and sponsors for the prize that I'm getting this year). It wouldn't surprise me if some of the past lists with hundreds of titles were largely made up, but even if they weren't, I doubt that the viewer got much enjoyment from it. I'm guessing that some "legitimate" lists included movies that were playing as the viewer dozed, showered, talked on the phone, etc. Without reviewing past challenge threads, I assume that many of the people who complained about being bored or disliking just about everything that they watched had lists with "impressive" numbers. I like my October viewing to get me into the Halloween mood, and for me that means horror and a spooky atmosphere, not bored and sleepy.

Basically, I'm in favor of quality, not quantity.

re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2015 Horror Challenge

I tend to dislike most of what I watch whether I'm watching 1 film a week or 10 films a day :D The year I watched 300 was definitely the best year quality-wise that I had; I found tons of new favourites and had a lot of fun. This year I watched half as many and there was so much mediocre crap that I didn't even bother trying to watch as many as I could.

indiephantom 11-13-14 09:57 AM

re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2015 Horror Challenge

Liking what I'm reading. I watched about half of what I normally would during this challenge, but enjoyed it twice as much. Guaranteed myself one film per day and more on days off or when I was really into it. It also allowed me time to read more reviews and write more of my own.

I think we need to make some changes though, even just to refresh things a bit. I'm not too worried about prizes. I didn't get either of my wins from last year, which as I recall was the result of a SNAFU with the titles. And, it's not why I do this challenge. I'm all about discovering new horror. I think that I have found it a bit less of community vibe. I know of IRCs and possible setups where people can share thoughts on movies while watching them. I think we should try to implement that next year. Does Google have a way to do this? Hangouts on line, or something.

I'm hoping to get more tech savvy in the coming year and I think what we're missing is a more interactive possibility. Even if and hour each day were devoted to some kind of live discussion of watches...something. We need a new gimmick to be thrown into the mix.

shadokitty 11-13-14 10:30 AM

re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2015 Horror Challenge

I know next year I plan to set a lower goal, maybe 50, or 31, as I enjoyed taking things at a slower pace on my way to make 100. Taking breaks now and then to watch what I normally like to watch helped keep the enjoyment of the challenge.

Undeadcow 11-13-14 12:30 PM

re: Comments, Suggestions & Feedback for the 2015 Horror Challenge

I agree enjoying the challenge is paramount but feel that even watching a large amount of movies can be amazingly fun over a limited time.

With more frequent viewings there's a wider variety of films I've enjoyed but might otherwise not devote time too. There's some really crappy looking movies out there that end up being amazing and if I weren't going for the gusto it'd be easy to bypass them. It's especially interesting to watch an entire franchise, like Friday the 13th, in mostly one day.

Yeah, though I normally save films that I'm not particularly interested in for the horror challenge to 'force' me to watch them - which may contribute to the fact that I end up not liking a lot of them - but better to give them a shot than to always wonder :)

The only franchise I've watched completely in a day was the Hellraiser series which I watched earlier this year on my birthday (had nothing else to do lol). I think I would've preferred watching the Friday the 13th series.

My goal is always 31 but I usually end the month somewhere in the 50s.
I easily made 100+ a couple of years ago when I was between jobs and at home all October. Now I work shifts, impossible for me to do 3.2 movies per work day.

I had all these horror movie posters that I was never going to hang at my house, so I started taking them to work and putting them in the break room (HR has not called me in yet).

And why did I post this here you ask, because the Poultygeist poster on the end was part of a prize I won from the challenge a few years back! Yes there is a Lloyd Kauffman signed poster in my employees break room.

Just wondering if I am the only one who gets on horror kicks out of the blue on other parts of the year. I just turned on Doc of the Dead on Netflix, because all of a sudden I want to watch a lot of horror. Could it be because I'm ill? And it makes me feel better?

I read somewhere that the fear in a safe situation that horror movies deliver can cause your brain to release dopamine and some people can get more of a kick out of it than others and this could explain why some people enjoy horror and some don't

My urge to watch horror movies comes and goes but it is usually strongest September thru October, but I watch horror movies all year long mixed with other genres. Probably about 10-25 percent horror per month excluding September and October. September being about 50 percent and October coming close to 100 percent of what I watch. Occasionally though I want to watch only horror for a couple of days straight.

This month I have only watched one horror movie so far. The Midnight Game (2013) It was pretty good but not great.

BTW: At least one Friday the 13th movie is mandatory viewing on any Friday the 13th

No, you are most definitely not. I do on occasion and the co-worker I dragged into the Horror Challenge just commented a couple of days ago that she wished it were Horror Challenge Month as she's itching to watch some horror. I just looked at her and asked why she's letting a simple thing like that stop her?
