Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

My effort to watch Buffy for every single eligible challenge continues to pay off, as I watched the last six episodes of season 4 on vacation! Watching the big battle in the penultimate episode seemed like
Spoiler:
Whedon ripped himself off later in The Cabin in the Woods.

On vacation with my mother-in-law has been interesting. Her system of watching TV every night is to check the schedule and switch to whichever program she wants to watch. I assume I'm like other challenge participants in that I tightly control what I'm watching, and even watching a live program is because I've specifically carved out that time slot for it. E.g., catch up on a program on the DVR for an hour, live program, then a DVD to finish off the evening.

Incidentally, my friends and I compiled Top 10 lists a few days ago. Looking at Bob and Trevor's lists make me a little ashamed of some of my selections, but these are all shows that I absolutely love.
  1. Fullmetal Alchemist
  2. The West Wing
  3. The Simpsons
  4. Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)
  5. The Dick Van Dyke Show
  6. Avatar: The Last Airbender
  7. Extras
  8. As Time Goes By
  9. Batman: The Animated Series
  10. Babylon 5
Some favorites that didn't quite make the list: The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek: The Original Series, and Frasier.

Did it in 3 different sittings, but I completed The Revenge of Cobra mini series. Now I just have to decide what to watch next.

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

Finished up S1 of SeaQuest and started S2. It was weird to hear the characters saying that you can't trust something grown in a test tube or that the Daggers weren't human because they were grown in test tubes. Guess IVF didn't take off until after the series was off the air. Season 2 is when the show started moving away from science and more toward fantasy and if memory serves it's not nearly as good but there are still some bright spots. I can't wait until I get to the time travel episode though I think I've discovered a small continuity error but I'll wait until I get to that one before I roll into spoilers.

As for the ten series I would take to a desert island
1. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
2. Babylon 5
3. Homicide: Life on the Street
4. Sports Night
5. The X-Files
6. Roc (I really wish this was on DVD)
7. Scandal
8. The Shield (and I've only watched it once)
9. Firefly
10. I can't decide b/t The Wire, Angel, and The West Wing

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

I'm still bouncing around shows instead of just sticking with one or two like I thought I was going to, but I'm still getting things off my to watch list, so I'm not too disappointed in myself.

I've been looking at people's top 10 desert island picks and have to say, I'm having a tough time with mine! Some are easy, but others, I really had to think-do I really rewatch enough to want it be one of the only ones I ever watch again? The easy ones are the top 4/5. After that, I'm just not sure. I can come up with shows I've watched and watched again, but in the last couple years, I've just not felt like watching them. But yet, I still really enjoy them, if that makes sense...

This is what I ended up with:

1. M*A*S*H
2. Star Trek (and if I have to pick a single series, it'd be ST:TNG)
3. Bones
4. Roseanne
5. Jonny Quest (the original ones)

6. Buffy
7. Highlander
8. The Brady Bunch
9. Daria
10. The Simpsons

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

After finishing off Murphy Brown in one and half day, I have been all over the place in watching shows. I think I might stick with Season 1 of Murder, She Wrote on Netflix although I have watched Cheers, The Nanny, Family Ties and Bones.

I made my DI picks based on what I want to watch over and over again. This is my Top Ten DI picks:
1) Twin Peaks
2) Twilight Zone
3) The Simpsons
4) Castle
5) Psych
6) Mary Tyler Moore
7) Family Ties
8) Bones
9) Chuck
10) Batman: TAS

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

My Desert Island series, in alphabetical order:
  • Batman: The Animated Series
  • Cheers
  • Dallas
  • The Dukes of Hazzard
  • Homicide: Life on the Street
  • Psych
  • She-Ra, Princess of Power
  • The Sopranos
  • Star Trek
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

That's a decent cross-section of my tastes and favorites. Some of those shows ran for quite awhile so I'd be occupied for a bit. Though I never got into, though, I did consider Gilligan's Island. Seems kind of obligatory.

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

Believe it or not, but 2014 marks the twentieth(!) anniversary of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. Last year, I turned up the Volume One DVD set used at Half Price Books for a buck and I couldn't resist. Here's my review of the set, spoiler'd for length rather than for content:

Spoiler:
I always enjoyed the show during its original run. I quit watching [adult swim] altogether several years ago, but I was (more or less) a first generation viewer of that bloc so it was nice to revisit its roots.

I'm hardly offended by language in general (anyone who has ever conversed with my casually can attest to that!), but it was almost refreshing to see humor written within such strict confines. There wasn't a single "damn" or "hell" to be heard, whereas even just the promos for today's [adult swim] shows feature stronger language.

Here's my breakdown by quality:
  • ***** 2 ("Story Book House" and "Fire Drill")
  • **** 3 ("Gilligan", "Batmantis" and "Jerk")
  • *** 8 ("CHiPs", "Bobcat", "Punch", "Banjo", "Girlie Show", "Hungry", "Urges", and "Explode")
  • ** 3 ("Elevator", "Spanish Translation", "Sleeper")
"Elevator" was the first episode produced, and "Spanish Translation" was the first to air/third produced/second on the DVD, so maybe I was harsher on those two because I was expecting more. It's hard to say. "Sleeper", featuring Hulk Hogan, is just dull.

The two big gems, though, are "Story Book House" and "Fire Drill". In the former, two previous episodes ("Banjo" and "Batmantis") are read to us by Kirk the Storyteller while Carl the Cartoonist dashes off quick sketches. I dig concepts like that, and it was one of the things this show did really well. (My favorite episode probably remains "Table Read", in which the voice cast and writers rehearse the episode, "Fire Ant". It's not included in Volume One.)

"Fire Drill" isn't a high concept episode; it's just Space Ghost trolling Donny Osmond, and it's hilarious.

There are five commentary tracks. None are particularly great, but only one was disappointing ("Elevator"). There are also two Christmas-themed music clips, one on each disc; the Council of Doom performs, uh, their version of "Twelve Days of Christmas" in an Easter egg on Disc One, and Zorak and the Original Way Outs perform "Jingle Bells" on Disc Two. Something to be aware of in December for you Holiday Challenge participants!

I'd be lying if I said that Space Ghost Coast to Coast was the most satisfying thing I've watched in awhile, but I can say that, on the whole, this collection held up a lot better for me than did Aqua Teen Hunger Force when I revisited it in August. Dollar well spent!

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

Here's my review of the recent Star Trek: The Next Generation "Unification" Blu-ray Disc, spoiler'd for length:
Spoiler:
"I'm looking for Ambassador Spock."
"Indeed. You have found him, Captain Picard."

That exchange remains one of the most exciting moments in the entire Star Trek canon. I can't even be sure the last time I saw either part of "Unification", but it thrilled me as an adolescent. I read the novelization penned by Jeri Taylor (who wrote the Part I teleplay). I bought the TNG Volume Three CD, featuring a suite of Dennis McCarthy's music from the two episodes. I was thrilled when Playmates added an Ambassador Spock action figure to their lineup, and when he appeared in Decipher's Star Trek CCG. In short, I've been borderline obsessed with "Unification" for 22+ years.

At present, the full season sets on Blu-ray are outside my limited entertainment budget, but I was kindly given some Amazon credit by a friend and splurged on this release. I know I'm behind the times, but this was my first TNG in HD (outside of the movies) and I was quite impressed with the A/V quality. I was captivated just taking in the richness of the textures of costumes and sets. The lone exception is that the Vulcan ear points on Mark Lenard are embarrassingly off-color from the actor's own skin tone. I never noticed it in SD, but it's distracting here. His scene with Patrick Stewart is so poignant and heartrending, though, that I feel guilty even remarking on such a trivial thing. It remains one of the most affecting scenes in the series.

As for the bonus content, I confess to being disappointed. Though I didn't expect anything particularly revelatory, there isn't much here that adds to the appreciation of the featured episodes. Also, CBS decided not to include an UltraViolet Digital Copy for this title, as they had done with the similar standalone Blu-ray releases for "The Best of Both Worlds" and "Redemption".

Commentary by Jeri Taylor and Mike & Denise Okuda ***
This one is a mixed bag. When Jeri Taylor shares anecdotes from either "Unification" or Star Trek at large, she's engaging and interesting. The highlight for me was hearing Taylor acknowledge that Sarek's reference to Spock going off into the mountains was, in fact, a direct reference to "Yesteryear", an episode of the animated series. The Okudas, however, interject with remarks and questions more along the lines of minutiae. It comes off as a Q&A conducted on a fan made podcast. Since Taylor doesn't appear in the lone making-of featurette, though, it's your only chance to hear her reminisces.

From One Generation to the Next: The Making of "Unification" (16:43) ***
In fairness to the producers, it's difficult to make a making-of featurette without any of the key principles participating. Jeri Taylor only recorded the commentary, Michael Piller (who wrote the second half) passed away several years ago, as did actor Mark Lenard, and apparently, Leonard Nimoy passed outright on anything to do with this release. Instead, we hear more about the road that led from the original series through the TNG episode "Sarek" to "Unification" - which, thankfully, is actually relevant and interesting, even if it feels off-topic.

Deleted Scene (1:43) ***
This one kind of baffles me. It's a throwaway scene, to be sure, but it's clearly completed, rather than rough footage that was jettisoned early. I can understand excising it from the broadcast episode, but it seems to me that this single cut Blu-ray would have been an appropriate place to reinsert it as originally planned, though of course, no one asked me.

Episodic Promo: "Unification I" (0:34) ***
Episodic Promo: "Unification II" (0:34) ***
Pretty basic TV promos, but that second one, touting "one man sacrifices his life" is entirely and unnecessarily misleading.

Conclusion
Though the bonus content is generic and the second half of the story - the part that actually includes Nimoy as Spock - feels rushed and anticlimactic, the first half is genuinely terrific. "Unification" has taken on a new place in the context of the franchise in the wake of the last two movies. I can't in all honesty call this a mandatory purchase for Trekkers with the money to buy the TNG Season Five Blu-ray set, but for me...I have no regrets.

Re: TV on DVD* Challenge - Season Four Discussion Thread

After not participating in the first of these challenges, participating in the second because my son wanted to watch The Walking Dead, and casually participating in the third, I have suddenly decided to focus on this challenge this year. We began with a documentary about Man Ray, after watching a few of his short films on New Year's Eve. We have already finished the first season of Hannibal (my daughter's choice), aided by the holiday and a snow day. My younger son decided to skip Hannibal, a wise choice for him, as I found it surprisingly gory for a network show. That's probably strong evidence of how little TV I've watched in the last decade or so.

A lot of different options of where to go next. I need to remember where I put the second season of Girls so I'd have it handy for this challenge (watched the first season for the Comedy Challenge, decided to save the second season).

In preparation for doing a blog entry on George Reeves' centennial today (Sun. Jan. 5), I watched 28 eps. of "Adventures of Superman" since Thursday evening, plus re-watching two with audio commentary. I only watched three of the color eps. and would like to see more of those but I'm not sure which are the best ones.

Which are "best" is very subjective... Here are a few of my favorites from S3-S6:

S3
"Clark Kent, Outlaw" - September 10, 1955
S4:
"The Big Freeze" - March 3, 1956
"The Girl Who Hired Superman" - May 5, 1956 (Guest Star Gloria Talbot!)
"Dagger Island" - May 19, 1956
"The Deadly Rock" - June 2, 1956
S5:
"The Town That Wasn't" - March 22, 1957
"Money to Burn" - April 19, 1957
"The Phony Alibi" - May 3, 1957
S6:
"The Mysterious Cube" - February 24, 1958
"The Perils of Superman" - April 21, 1958
"All That Glitters" - April 28, 1958

In honor of what would have been George Reeves' birthday, I started today with the one Adventures of Superman episode I own, Superman and the Mole-Men. I think it may have meant to have been the pilot as it was a different Lois Lane.

It was shot as a theatrical film as well as being a trial run, or pilot of sorts, for The Adventures of Superman TV series. When the series started the film was recut into the only two-part episode called "The Unknown People" which aired late in season 1. The film as well as season 1 of the series starred Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane (she received equal star billing at Reeves' insistance). Noel Neill, who had played Lois in the 2 Superman serials (1948 & 1950) alongside Kirk Alyn (as Superman), took over the role starting with season 2. Production had been suspended following season 1 while the producers looked for a national sponsor. When production started on season 2, Coates had already committed herself elsewhere so Noel Neill was tapped for the role as she'd already played the part successfully in the serials.

I've always thought Coates portrayal of Lois was a stronger one as she seemed to be less of a "damsel in distress", but that can also be attributed to the difference in scripts from season 1 to the later seasons. While I more closely associate Noel Neill with the part I tend to favor Coates.

Season 1 and, to a degree, season 2 are crime/noir type productions. Once the series shifted to color it became more "kid friendly" as well as more aligned to the nature of the comic series during that time (criminals as bumbling fools, more comedy, and more SF themes). It's almost like 2 different programs.

My Desert Island shows would be:

1. Friends
2. Lost
3. X-Files
4. Seinfeld
5. The Office
6. Mad Men
7. The Twilight Zone
8. Justice League (Unlimited)
9. Modern Family
10. Mystery Science Theater 3000

I'd be tempted to pick SNL just for the music and longevity.

As I go through S2 of SeaQuest I now remember how bad season 2 was compared to season 1 and how much I disliked the character of Brody - though the episode with his mom was pretty good and I can see the beginnings of the film "Minority Report" in the flashback sequences. Spielberg had to get something out of producing this series. I really wonder what accounted for the change in tone between seasons, where the ratings that bad? The producers didn't do the female gender any favors by replacing Hitchcock with Henderson - the latter was a mess of a character compared to the former. The same goes for replacing Westphalen with Smith.

Remember; seaQuest DSV aired opposite Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. I'm pretty sure it lost consistently in the ratings war to Teri Hatcher. I also remember Roy Scheider made a big deal out of pushing for the second season to delve a lot more into sci-fi than had been done in the first season.

Nice sum-up, Bob, although I tend to favor Neill over Coates and Season Two over Season One. I watched a total of 28 eps. over the last few days and I did a blog entry on the show today in honor of Reeves' centennial:

Was in the mood for some old favorites, so I've watched a couple episodes so far of one of my favorite cartoons as a kid, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe as I have the MC Season 1 set. While I admit it wasn't as good as some other cartoons of the era, it is still a guilty pleasure of mine. I'll probably watch some She-Ra some time this month too.

I didn't remember that - I didn't get into Lois & Clark until the reruns were airing in syndication. That situation explains a lot, thank you!
