Re: 4th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

Just finished the first volume of Animaniacs this week. Like others have mentioned, I still have lots of unwatched animation sets that I purchased from Big Lots years ago.

damn home computer frizzed out on me yesterday, sitting here in the library making some random posts and doing my mod thang... I've got a boat load of stuff I need to add to my challenge list, but that won't happen til next week. [sigh]...

Boooo!!

We're only allowed four at a time from our library - which is a bit annoying because we have a surprisingly good range, too.
Yup, I read that earlier. When I buy it, I'll have to open it right away and see if I got a good one or not. Hoping that by the time I do get to it, all of them will be fixed. But, it is nice that they are offering replacements. That doesn't always happen.

Hmm, I've never had a problem with limits at the library. I do try to keep it around 5-6 as you only get them for a week, but they haven't said anything about getting too much. I wonder if they had problems with people taking too many out at once and limiting popular titles?

I actually went through half (3) of the titles I got from the library yesterday. It wasn't hard as they were kids ones, so fairly short. 3 more to go!

TVShowsonDVD have new information with different codes for the fixed and unfixed versions, so you won't even need to open it immediately.

That's a thought... I was thinking that our library system had had problems with theft, and was trying to limit their potential losses... The computer system just won't let them issue more than four.

However, it's not really a particularly sane attempt to restrict patrons to only the number of things they can reasonably watch in a week, since those four titles can be full seasons of TV shows, and therefore potentially 4 sets of up to 6 discs!

We've just got half of the Shrek spin-offs out, and many of them are less than half an hour long..! I would feel really ripped off if I'd bought them.

I saw that yesterday-was going to post the next time I was on, but you beat me to it! It's nice that they're changing the UPC codes so you can see at a glance which one you bought.

I've been fairly lucky with buying the Shrek shows-been able to get all but one relatively cheap as you're right, they are very short! Sad thing is, I've liked them all! I think the Halloween one is great fun.

Re: 4th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

Just finished watching "Millennium Actress (Sennen joyû)" and really enjoyed it. I was expecting not to that much, but it really held my attention and I wanted to find out what happened in the end. It's a bit sad, melancholic, but quite good. It's fast paced. Liked how the current time people mixed with the story telling of the past, especially.

It's films like this one, "Wallace and Gromit," "Tokyo Godfathers" and "Summer Wars" that I enjoy doing these challenges for. I would never have watched these just randomly-there's really no way that I would have been exposed to them naturally, but by trying to fulfill the checklist, recommendations here on list and trying to check off movies at icheckmovies.com, I've been exposed to several movies I've really enjoyed and am glad I have not missed them. There's probably been more duds, yes, but I think the good movies that I have found more than make up for them!

While I haven't got them from Big Lots, I too have a lot of unwatched animation sets, like season 1 of the 1982 He Man and the Masters of the Universe, season 1of She Ra, series 1 of G.I. Joe, various anime series, and the MASK series set.

Re: 4th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

Just finished up American Pop. I can say I enjoyed it but I doubt I'll ever look for a copy for my collection. It's an interesting story-following the lives of 4 generations of a Jewish, Russian family with music. If you're looking for something to finish up the challenge with, it's a good choice. It even counted for an unexpected checklist item for me, the director is Ralph Bakshi. I rented it without knowing that so pleasant surprise.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! (I also saw your post on the Criterion challenge thread.) It is one of my all-time favorite animated films. It was a blind-buy from a closing Blockbuster store, and I bought it solely due to the cover art. Sometimes judging a film by its cover works out well!

I just finished My Neighbors the Yamadas, an anime film that has been sitting on my shelf for quite some time. It took me about ten minutes to acclimate to the sketchy animation style, and after that, I was completely hooked. It is one of the sweetest, most charming films I've watched in a long time. It's a series of vignettes about a middle-class Japanese family, and parts of it are insanely funny. I'm sure some of my neighbors heard me laughing!

Go to your list and click at the bottom where it says "Last edited by [Your Name]; [some date] at [some time]." It will take you to the "Post Edit History" page. You should be able to recover an older edit from there. (I've never actually done this, so good luck.)

Edit: Okay, I tried it. What you do is click on "Old" for a post that has everything you lost, "New" can be the current one, then click the "Compare Versions" button, and you should get everything from the old one and the new one with the differences highlighted. Then you can just cut and paste the missing stuff into your list.

Re: 4th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

I've fallen pretty far behind in this thread. Lisa and I synced up to watch The Boondocks The Complete First Season. That was a lot of fun. After a month that revealed to me how little enjoyment I still get from a lot of [adult swim] fare, it was nice to find one that's just as satisfying as ever. They did a spectacular job with the animation as well as the writing. One thing neither of us noticed until this time through was that there's a chair thrown in just about every episode. More disappointingly, though, there's really only one positive portrayal of a black woman and that's Granddad's sister ("Wingmen"). Riley cracks me up, but Huey's my fave.

The highlight episode remains "Return of the King", in which Dr. King survived the assassination attempt and went into a decades-long coma, from which he awakens. The episode scathingly indicts our sound byte-happy media that would be too impatient and impertinent for the eloquence of such a man, and it exposes the vacuum of real leadership in society today. It's social satire at its finest, making us laugh and cringe simultaneously.

As for me, I finally got around to watching The Lion King 1½. From my Letterboxd diary:
Spoiler:
After being so thoroughly disappointed by The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, I was apprehensive about revisiting The Lion King 1½. So apprehensive, in fact, that it took me eleven days to bring myself to pop in this DVD.

Pleasantly enough, though, I found I enjoyed The Lion King 1½. By shifting the focus to Timon and Pumbaa, they avoided the cumbersome task of dealing with the lions again - which is where The Lion King II got into trouble. There's a Back to the Future, Part II-level meta quality here that lets the story add to the first picture while still offering something new.

The pace is brisk, and making it concurrent with The Lion King allows the story to use some shorthand for narrative development that, in turn, keeps the focus on the comedy throughout. They go back too often for my taste to Pumbaa's gastroenterology for humor, but the byplay between Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella makes it feel like we've dropped in on two longtime friends.

The most glaring deficiency of The Lion King 1½ is the soundtrack. "Digga Tunnah" has a somewhat catchy melody, but it's certainly not on par with anything from the first film. Such comparison might be unfair, were it not for the fact that some of the songs are referenced throughout this film. They're done cleverly, such as showing where Timon and Pumbaa were during the in-movie performances of "I Just Can't Wait to Be King", "Be Prepared" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight".

The chief problem is that these are not the original recordings and they don't feel right. Especially obnoxious is "Can You Feel the Love Tonight", where just that title line is repeated. We never hear any of the verses or even the rest of the chorus.

It was nice, after the tedium of The Lion King II to be so entertained by The Lion King 1½.

The Lion King 1½ was re-ranked on my Flickchart to #579/1545

I love that show! One of my favorite episodes in Season Three's premiere, "It's a Black President, Huey Freeman". Werner Herzog does a great parody of himself as he documents the Freeman's responses to President Obama's election. It's great! If I didn't have so much unwatched animation in my collection, I would revisit the show.

I've been trying to finish up the first volumes of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Tiny Toon Adventures. If time permits, I may try marathoning another anime series as well.

Boy, I am really enjoying Alf! I brought the first season along to my parent's place on vacation and have been watching it with my father and one of my sons. I forgot how much I liked this show when it had its run on TV. Really silly but very entertaining! I wonder if it holds up for all four seasons? I only have the first. I didn't buy more since finding out they are the butchered syndicated episodes. And what's with the crazy order they are in on these discs? It's almost random!

BTW: He IS almost always a puppet. It almost seems impossible because his movements are so good, but that is because he has two operators down below. Each has a separate hand and various other tasks.

I hope you are talking about the show not the cartoon! The cartoon-so not worth it. But I saw the puppet add on, so am hoping it's the show.

Watched the first disc of season 1 of Beetlejuice this evening. It still holds up, but I remember still liking it the last time I watched my copy of the movie which has a couple episodes on it. Three things got my attention: 1) Lydia and Beetlejuice spend the majority of their time in the "real" world. While there is some Netherworld action, it's really not a lot.

2) So far this season (half way through) focuses on just Lydia and Beetlejuice. Her parent show up a couple times, her friends a couple times and the Neitherworld friends once that I remember. Looking back, I remember them all in the shows, well, maybe not the parents, frequently. Maybe in seasons 2-4 they start showing up more?

3) Beetlejuice sounds just like Michael Keaton. I know it's not, but it sounds like him! It's Stephen Ouimette, I believe, and he does a great job of it!

They're not at all bad - and it's interesting to see which ones they did (and did not) get the main cast back for! - but I was wondering during the Werewolf and Thriller shorts quite who they were aimed at... those seemed a little bit too 'adult' for many children.

LOL! Yes! It was your comments about the animated series that made me think of Alf and realize it could also qualify for this challenge. At the time, I didn't think I owned any but about a week ago I found season one among some stuff in my office so I cracked it open. So I thank you for not enjoying the animated series enough to post about it!

I found another show from the 80s that I've enjoyed revisiting. I haven't finished the first mini series yet, but what I have seen, I have enjoyed of G.I. Joe. Other than the movie, I own all of series one, and the first two mini series before it became a regular daily series.

Glad it worked for you. I'd seen a couple of posts about that function, but had never used it, so your post gave me a reason to actually try it.

Since this is the last week of the challenge, I looked through the lists as you need to participate in order to be eligible for a prize. There were for lists with nothing listed.

I'm glad the Tiny Toons volume 4 set will have a new UPC for the ones with the corrected disc. I'll definitely get that if I see it at Target or Best Buy.

Re: 4th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

Today, I was able to finish the first volume of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983). I was really surprised at how well the show held up for me. The characters are really engaging, and the story-lines were not as repetitive as similar shows. I watched the included featurettes which outlined how innovative the show was from a business standpoint. Apparently, it was the first cartoon to be made for syndication and paved the way for others in the industry to bypass the networks.

I also watched an anime film called Tekkonkinkreet (2006) and really enjoyed it. The film sets up a visually stunning world for its characters. The level detail in the sets is astonishing. The characters live in "Treasure Town" which has fallen on hard times and seems to consist of vacant lots, crumbling industrial complexes, and low-rent residential and commercial districts. The film follows a duo of street urchins who run foul of an enterprising gang of developers who are going to teardown Treasure Town to set up an amusement park. I was shocked to see the film delve into the psychology of the characters and not rely on action sequences (not to say that the action sequences aren't awesome).

I tried to watch a conversation with the director and the band Plaid who provided music for the film, but it was one of the most boring interviews I've ever attempted to watch. I lasted all of five minutes before giving up.

Re: 4th Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread

Whoo hoo! A little while ago I priced Millennium Actress and found that the used started around $15. Today, I rechecked and found one for $7.50! Glad I waited!

Finished off the first season of Beetlejuice. I was glad to see more episode take place in the Neitherworld. As I mentioned before, most of the first half takes place in the normal world. The 2nd half had a lot more quirkiness and was a bit more fun to watch. With a few days left of the challenge to go, I'm going to try to watch at least the next disc or two (which would be seasons 2 and 3 leaving me with season 4 to go).
