I just wanted to throw in my two cents about the commercial one-I'm all for getting rid of this one! I did it last year and it was a pain in the butt. If someone wants to keep it, how about shortening it to maybe 5 or 10?

I'll add my voice to those in favor of axing the "watch animated commercials" checklist item. One or two might be OK but 100 is enough to cause me to avoid the checklist.

I discovered there are quite a few animations that either won or were nominated for the Saturn Award. How about a "Nominated for a Saturn Award" checklist item?

I've updated the checklist with the suggestions people have posted. Sorry it took so long to update, I have just been rather busy with life this month.

I'd vote to eliminate the: "Watch animation from at least three different formats" section.

Also...

Why not go ahead and un-combine "Ralph Bakshi and Don Bluth" in the "Watch 5 Winsor McKay Award Winners from the Annie Awards" section. As you select 5 from the list there are enough that those of us who do not like the work of either can simply ignore their presence (unless you're trying for full completion) plus it gives those who *do* like their work a additional checklist opportunity. Another option would be to put *all* the names 2 per line with a select one from each line mandate. Then put Bakshi and Bluth on separate lines so they can be avoided as desired. You could still leave it at 5 overall or make it "one from each line" for completion.

I don't have any problems with this as a check list item, but can anyone suggestion any other non-fiction animation other than "Waltz with Bashir?" I tried watching that one last year and didn't get very far.

Good call. When I suggested that section, I didn't expect it to be adopted exactly as I had put it together.

The Lion King is a documentary.

I watched that with a friend, and we sat in silence for probably five minutes after the credits ran. It's one of those "too painful to watch twice" films. Off the top of my head, I can only come up with Persepolis (2007) and Madagascar, a Journey Dairy (2009), a short film. Hmmm... perhaps Wild Life (2011), which is not technically non-fiction but is based on true stories. That's all I can come up with.

This is an animated documentary about the great manga artist, Yoshihiro Tatsumi, author of the autobiographical manga, "A Drifting Life."

VICTORY THROUGH AIR POWER (1943)
This is an animated feature documentary that advocated the use of air power to win the war (World War II). Churchill saw it and then insisted that Roosevelt see it, so it had some impact. It's on the Front Lines set from the Walt Disney Treasures series and there are tons of other animated films on that set that would qualify.

Also, the Tomorrowland set from Walt Disney Treasures includes animated specials on the moon and space travel, including Man on the Moon and Eye in Outer Space that would qualify.

Lion King is a documentary?

I'd say Lion King 1 1/2 is more of a documentary.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Hopefully I can find something out of those that I can get. Maybe this will be my incentive for getting that WD Treasure Tin with Victory Through Air Power in it. I just watched the Tomorrowland ones so I probably won't revisit, but that's something I can fall back on. Though, Persepolis could be an option too. I have heard of that one, at least, but didn't realize it was non-fiction.

The film is nice, but the graphic novel (originally published in two volumes) is richer in content. Marjane Satrapi wrote and illustrated it, telling the story of her childhood and coming-of-age as a child of the Iranian revolution. It's a fascinating look at a rather unique generation in that society. The film is abridged (for obvious reasons) and while I did like it, it felt somewhat gutted. I would recommend maybe seeing the film first and then reading the graphic novel. It might be more satisfying that way.

Too little, too late!

I agree! I watched the film first and picked up the graphic novel on my way home. The novel is just wonderful, rich and rewarding to read. It's right up there with Fun Home by Alison Bechdel (of the Bechdel Test fame) and David Chelsea in Love.

Since I'm not making it to as much anime as I was hoping in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy challenge, that will probably me my focus for this challenge. Most of the animation in my unwatched pile consists of television content. For course, I did just get three Disney films on BD for my birthday... I'll see if I wait for two weeks!

Just to let everyone know, my vacation is now official. I just booked my flight this afternoon. I'll fly home monday night after the challege starts.
