Any love for the High Chaparral?

This was an old '60s western TV series that I would love to get on DVD. Sort of a take off on Bonanza but better I thought.

JOE29, have you been getting reacquainted with the show since it started airing on INSP a few months back?

I suspect you might already be aware, but for others that may not, each of the four seasons was released on German DVD over the past few years. And coming next week Germany is releasing a complete series set. I didn't follow the pricing on the individual releases too closely, but as of now the complete set seems to be a better option in terms of pricing...as of right now, it'd set you back about $109 shipped to the U.S..

On a somewhat related note, I'm interested in John Payne's THE RESTLESS GUN complete set coming from Timeless in April. I'll pick it up when it hits a nice price point sometime this year.

No i haven't seen it on TV at anytime in the past years. I remember watching it when I was a youngster when it had it's syndication run. The $109 is way too much for me to buy at one time. But I'd love to see a US Release. Don't know if that would ever happen though.

smurr05, didn't really get the info. from anyplace...I'm always "window shopping" at various e-tailers so I stumble into stuff. I don't know if it offers the best pricing in terms of German e-tailers, but I'm comfortable with Amazon Germany (aka amazon.de). The price I mentioned earlier is based on the price there. Just search "High Chaparral" and you'll turn up the individual sets and the complete series. U.S.-based daaveedee.com also has the individual sets if you want to double-check the tech specs, but their prices are much higher.

Now that I think about it, I have some faint recollection of a minor issue with regard to the first season release. I believe it was something along the lines of the first few minutes of the very first episode being in German-language...I think it was something like that. But otherwise things were fine. Don't know if they corrected that for the Complete Series set.

In other somewhat related matters, I've been enjoying the Western series THE REBEL starring Nick Adams on Me-TV (Saturday mornings). There was a nice episode a couple weeks back which incorporated the tale of the Apache warrior Massai (aka the same character played by Burt Lancaster in APACHE). While they of course took some historical liberties, I thought the treatment was reverent in many ways with regard to the tale of Massai.

A bit off topic- I also would like to get the TV series Hondo, not the John Wayne movie, but the old TV series.

smurr05, sure thing, pleasure to be of service.

JOE29, I thought Ralph Taeger was wonderful as Hondo. I'm surprised he didn't have a more successful career in the years that followed.

Thanks to you I have been watching the show again on the INSP Network. It's good to re-visit it. I never knew that it was on.

JOE29, I'm pleased to learn that I was able to be of some use.

COZI TV is another newish (at least to me) channel with some retro programming including - given his passing a couple days back - Dale Robertson's TALES OF WELLS FARGO.

In case you haven't already checked it out - and as one of the very few flag-waving Westerns fans on this board - you might enjoy the "50 Westerns from the 50s" blog. Toby - the author of the blog (and aspiring author as he is currently working on two books) - well, Toby is real good people.
