Maybe expand the checklist even more but then have different levels of completion? The higher rank/level you accomplish could then earn you another prize entry or a wild card*. Something like:
Bronze: Complete 50% of the checklist, dupes allowed.
Silver: Complete 75% of the checklist, dupes allowed.
Gold: Complete 100% of the checklist, dupes allowed.
Platinum: Complete 100% of the checklist with no dupes and every item** completed.

I still wonder whether offering a short list and a long list might work - so you could choose to do either, while the long list would include the short - but it might be easier and simpler to leave the no-duplicates as a personal challenge, as people have explained some do for watching a multi-tick-movie that counts in many ways.

Not sure how many of you have seen it, but I watched a neat documentary earlier today on Netflix Streaming called The American Scream. It chronicles three groups of people in the same Massachusetts town during October who build the "ultimate" haunted house each Halloween. Would be cool for a wildcard.

Yeah, I watched The American Scream during the challenge and thought it was excellent. If you haven't already, check out the director's first movie, Best Worst Movie, which is about the Troll 2 phenomenon.

Believe it or not, it's getting to be about that time again ...at least as far as contacting potential sponsors goes.
Bumping this to see if anyone has suggestions for any we haven't had in the past?

I've been thinking about horror the past few days. This bump makes me realize the thread isn't too far away.

This thread has inspired me to break into my MC Horror sets as there is plenty to watch before the challenge. Just started watching Black Dragons.

My suggestion for the checklist is to dump
--- Takes Place in Space -
--- Takes Place on a Holiday -
--- Takes Place on or Under the Sea -
just because there a limited number of films that fit those criteria, they are already used in the Sci-Fi checklist, and the horror checklist could use a refresh.
How about adding these checkmarks?
---Forbidden knowledge (Lovecraft and Elder Gods mythos)
---Old West horror
---Eldritch powers (aka telepathy, psychokinesis)
The X/NC-17 check should be optional because there just aren't that many extreme horror films being made anymore, and porn horror is boring
.
And maybe bringing back the Criterion/ MOC check?
I am so pumped for October!

I feel like this challenge garners lots of great sponsors already (giving many people a chance to win) so maybe we go less quantity of individual prizes this year and more value per prize.
Looking forward to the challenge itself as always too. I have lots of horror backlogged to get to (been playing too many videogames I guess).

Really excited about the upcoming challenge and I've been thinking about it for the past few weeks.
Kept poking my head in since I've been wondering if others were also getting excited.
I really agree with Undeadcow on his suggestion for the checklist. Those previous theme nights deserve a new home on the checklist and maybe some of the others could be dropped or incorporated.

To diversify the checklist it would be good to use theme from previous years and insert then into the checklist. For example this year's medical horror or campfire tales could become checklist items. There's been enough theme nights over the years that there should be plenty to chose from.

I have actually felt a little guilty watching a few horror movies over the last few weeks knowing that we are getting close.

To be honest, I haven't been that excited about this one. Something always seems to leave a sour taste in my mouth. Whether it's the inactive member who pops up just in time to list their 819 movies watched for the month before vanishing again or the endless debates about wildcards and what constitutes "true horror".
That being said, I've still started holding off on watching horror for the past few weeks.

Each year I say that I'm not going to look at lists and then I end up doing so anyway. Just a glutton for punishment, I guess.

Ditto, although I might dip into some Criterion horror in September. Given that I'm actually working this year, I doubt I'll get past 50 films, but I'll enjoy each film I watch..

Yeah, 306. 300+ has happened a few times and I feel like it has been bullshit each and everyt ime. Averaging 10-12 hours daily for a month is something that I don't find to be believable, no matter how you defend it. I believe it even less when the member doesn't post for 9 months, immediately after the results thread. Just doesn't sit well with me.

I went to 132 last year and it messed me up for awhile. Haha. It was a fun experience but after a heavy day or two my head just couldn't take it. Wasn't working much last year at the time so I was able to exceed expectations. I might get to 100 again, but I'm setting a lower goal this year so that I can enjoy the flicks more and maybe do more reviewing. I want to do theme nights and the checklist for sure, though.

Jeez guys I consider myself accomplished when I have hit 31. I am SO happy to get a movie a day in.
JMO if there is a big argument over any title being included....I think that shows it really isn't horror enough. To me it should not even really be debatable. And if there's debate, then yes, to me that's where you use the wildcard.
(I wanted to laugh at Spiderman being watched in a horror challenge last year but it was too dramatic already--I try to stay neutral.
)
