Alice: the Complete First Season

Maybe I'm the only person on these boards who's excited about this news, but Warner has just made the first season of Alice available MOD through the Warner Shop. This show is like a nice PB&J to me -- comfort food.

It's $29.99 thru Warner, not counting shipping and tax (?). Question: do these MOD sets ever get offered through Amazon?

I used to watch this show. Kiss my grits!

I think they do hit Amazon, after a bit of a delay. Don't expect huge discounts, though.

Re: Alice: the Complete First Season

I own the TV favorites DVD that was released years ago. I just checked Amazon and from the prices there, it looks like it must be rare/OOP. I would love to have more of this show on DVD. I've not had any experiences with the MOD, but I did get the e-mail about the release and would be interested in picking it up. The disappointing thing, from what I've seen, is just what's been mentioned--it's hard to find a good deal on these. I'd like to see some of the Survivor seasons that are MOD, but I've never seen them cheap enough to warrant a purchase and they've been out for a while.

Alice is a good show, but the MOD thing has me worried a bit, but I don't think it'll get released anywhere else or through retail and they do get pricey, but hopefully they have a sale on it sooner rather than later.

Re: Alice: the Complete First Season

I watched Alice many times growing up, but I don't think that I will buy it. Although if it ever would come back to TV, ( TVLand, or something like that ) i'd be sure to watch a few episodes now and then. I thought Vic Tayback ( I think that was his name if i remember correctly ) it's been so long ago, was great as Mel.

Yeah, all Warner ones at least usually show up there within a few weeks of release. http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Alice-Season-1/17082

On second thought, I could pick it up as a nostalgic thing. If the price is right.

Re: Alice: the Complete First Season

Amazon has it "in stock."

How can something that's "made on demand" be "in stock"?

The description says "This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media."

I would buy it, but $34.95 is a little steep for one season. I will patiently wait for it to go down a little.

Um, because the MOD model allows them to produce smaller and less-risky runs of stock that can be shipped immediately? As opposed to sending some guy running to the burner every single time an order comes through?

It's not a fucking conspiracy. Christ.

Just purchased from WB (along with the early 70s film "The Todd Killings").

I love me some Flo.

I had thought that "made on demand" meant that each individual set is produced when someone orders it - not by "some guy" - but by an automated system.

Warner Archive Releasing "Alice" Season 2 DVD Later This Year
Digital Digest: More "Alice" from Warner Archive
Saturday, July 07, 2012
by Skees

Hopefully, if you are a fan of the classic Linda Lavin series "Alice", then you are enjoying Alice - The Complete First Season on DVD. But if you were excited about that release, then you'll be even more excited to learn that more "Alice" will be making it to DVD by the end of the year!

According to the Warner Archive Facebook page:

"We can officially confirm that due to unprecedented consumer response to ALICE Season 1, clearances have been expedited and work has begun to bring you ALICE Season 2 later this year."

So it's official! "Alice" has done well on DVD, and we'll be seeing more!

They seem to be surprised that seasons 1 has sold so well - I guess they don't read message boards, or the amazon customer reviews of the 6 episode disc that was released several years ago. Anyway, it's good that season 2 is being released.

Re: Alice: the Complete First Season

Selling so well that they will release a pressed dvd with some extras?!? Polly Holliday, Linda Lavin, and Elizabeth Howland are all (thankfully) still around. I would pay hard money to hear some audio commentaries. Why that sounds great.. (Didnt think so)

Season 2 is now available from the WB website, and amazon will soon be offering it, although an exact date for amazon has not been specified:

I believe it's based on velocity. If they're consistently selling, say, 20 copies a day, they can run that many copies all at once and not have to wait for each order to come in. They can turn orders around faster that way as well.

Gambled and lost (thanks Amazon for delaying shipping until something I had pre-ordered on another earlier order came into stock), but I'll add that the case/disc holders they've chosen to use are very low quality and pretty much guaranteed to scratch the shit out of discs 1 and 2.

When I bought season 1 it had this kind of case, which holds the discs quite well. (I have not bought season 2 so far.)

Re: Alice: the Complete First Season

The case for season 2 that mine arrived in is similar, but very low quality.

The hinged tray that houses discs 1 and 2 is solid and made of very cheap porous plastic (the kind that has that strong plastic smell that never seems to fade, and warped enough so that when closed it has a gap at the top and bottom that you could pass a disc through), with the hubs being the type that push down against the face of the disc on the other side to release.

The biggest problem with these hubs is that they're not indented on the underside and were cut so poorly that they're sharp enough to scratch the surface of the disc beneath, so any movement that makes the discs rotate during shipping creates a circular gouge as if someone scratched it with a Spirograph.

Re: Alice: the Complete First Season

Just tried pre-ordering in the hopes of a pressed set.
It wouldn't take my CC info 7 or 8 times, then the 9th shot me back to the cart.
I'll try again later.

Thanks for the heads up though.
