Studio pulling Harry Potter discs from stores December 29
Warner Brothers is taking a page from Disney.
The studio announced that it will pull all Harry Potter DVDs and Blu-rays from store shelves on December 29, 2011.
Move follows the November 11 home entertainment release of the final film in the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2," which should send disc sales into the stratosphere. The studio is also releasing a box-set of all eight Potter films on that date.
Disney has employed a similar strategy with animated hits like "Beauty and the Beast" and "Sleeping Beauty," re-releasing the movies in theaters and on tricked out versions for limited periods of time.
If the runaway success of the 3D re-release of "The Lion King" is any guide, fans can expect Potter to wave his wand in theaters at some point in the future.
Warner Brothers says the new moratorium will not apply to digital copies or video-on-demand.

Hm, so the last Harry Potter will be available for less than 2 months and that's that? Interesting choice to make such a limited edition.

Seems like a bad move to pull the blu-rays since that is still a growing format, and not mature like DVD.
At any rate, like Disney, it is a colossal dick move to make children's movies unavailable for long periods of time.

A smart entrepreneur would buy them up and then sell 'em at inflated prices on eBay after they become officially unavailable.
I'm not a smart entrepreneur and I have no idea where the nearest Costco is. So, take it away, geniuses...

There's part of me wonders if WB is trying to add some sort of gravitas to these films. Certainly, Disney has done so with its films going "Back in the Vault!" Thing is, no matter how good people may think the films are, the added gravitas is self-imposed and thus, comes off perhaps a little undeserved or false to me.

I really doubt the first 5 or 6 movies will have inflated prices since there have been many years to sell many copies of them. The last 2 or 3 movies might get a little inflated though.

Pretty sucky. I was hoping for a Deathly Hallows 1 & 2 combo release on blu-ray. Now it's going to be pricey and I don't really see a lot of copies of DH part 1 floating around on blu.

If you read the Digital Bits, you'll find out that Warner will be putting out whole new editions with new special features next year. So Warner's idea of putting them in the vault means no titles for about 9 months. Whoopty-friggin-do. I think we'll survive.

Nice. I'll wait then.

Have they even released the Ultimate for part 1 yet? So people who bought all six will have an incomplete set because they plan on releasing new box sets next year?

5 and 6 only just came out 4 months ago, so I didn't plan on it being out this year. First they have to do the simple editions and then the ones without patience double dip on the other sets. Nothing's really changing because even though they're going back to the vault, it's not like the existing copies are going to fly off the shelves. The same copies that have been sitting there for months will still be there at the beginning next year.

It works, but it seems like it is too late to try with the Potter discs, they have been discounted and rereleased so many times that there's not likely to be a shortage on the used market.

So for the "ultimate" collector who wants every little special feature, would it be best to hold off until a box set with every thing in it comes out?

I don't know how to break this to you but there will likely never be an all-encompassing edition. Just ask Star Wars fans. 30 years later and they're still scraping up outtakes of Chewbacca taking a crap and the fanboys rush off to buy the new edition. Either settle on one or be resigned to getting milked to death.

Instead I see other types of box sets that could be considered "ultimate sets" but not specifically with the ultimate editions.

I'm going to wait for the "Hermione Granger Dressed as Bellatrix LeStrange and Soaking Wet" Special Edition.
