Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD & Blu-ray: The Official Thread
For the sake of simplicity, and since it's probably all any of us really care about anyway, this thread will only pertain to the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts, movies, and specials produced before 1970, with a few exceptions. I will include the post-1970 television specials that still had Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, and Mel Blanc involved and featured new animation as well as including on the DVD and Blu-ray listings those shorts produced after 1970.
I'll use the first three posts to gather all relevant information about the shorts, which have been released on DVD and Blu-ray, and which DVDs and Blu-rays contain which shorts, as well as to post updates with recent news pertaining to releases. As for the list of DVDs and Blu-rays, I'll include a link to the DVD Talk Review if one exists.
Because there are so many shorts I might inadvertently leave something out, so if you notice anything missing please let me know. Additionally, there are some shorts that have been released in their entirety, only as part of a documentary; as of now I have not included those on the DVD and Blu-ray list, but may revisit that decision and would welcome any input as to that decision. Once I finish updating the list of shorts (which will be the most time consuming) I may also indicate in the DVD and Blu-ray list which non-animation DVDs and Blu-rays include the shorts as bonus features, but if I do that it will definitely be the last thing since most of us aren't going to be interested in getting such releases for only one short.
Feel free to post any comments, suggestions, or news and discuss the releases throughout the rest of the thread.

Created by legendary animator Chuck Jones, the series had a simple premise: The coyote, who was very hungry, tried to catch the Road Runner, who was very fast. Wile E. would try anything to catch his prey, utilizing a wide variety of products from the Acme Company (rocket skates, giant magnets, foot springs, etc.).
Regardless of the scheme, it would always backfire, and Wile E. would end up trapping, flattening, or blowing himself up. The coyote was persistent, though. No matter how many failures he met with, no matter how many times he fell off a cliff, no matter how many signs he held up with the word "Ouch!" written on them, he refused to give up. Signs were the only way Wile E. communicated in his shorts with the Road Runner, and the bird only spoke the two-word catchphrase, "Beep Beep!"
Warner Home Video has today announced that a title with new-to-DVD content will be released on May 24th when they put out Looney Tunes Super Stars' Road Runner & Wile E. Coyote: Supergenius Hijinks. The disc will cost $19.98 SRP, and contains 15 animated shorts. Below is a copy-and-paste with Warner's information listing those shorts (this is an exact quote, and we're assuming the studio info is correct as shown). Underneath that you'll find the package art!
1. NEW 2010 ROADRUNNER #1 (Judge Granny Case)
2. NEW 2010 ROADRUNNER #2 (Wild King Dumb)
3. NEW 2010 ROADRUNNER #3 (Wile E. Coyote Ugly)
4. WHIZZARD OF OW
5. CHARIOTS OF FUR
6. LITTLE GO BEEP
7. FREEZE FRAME
8. SOUP OR SONIC
9. SUGAR AND SPIES
10. CLIPPERTY CLOBBERED
11. THE SOLID TIN COYOTE
12. OUT AND OUT ROUT
13. SHOT AND BOTHERED
14. CHASER ON THE ROCKS
15. HIGHWAY RUNNERY
EDIT: Like the Tweety & Sylvester and Foghorn Leghorn releases, this one will include both the original full frame aspect ratio and the newly created matted widescreen.
I've created a spot for this release on the list, but won't list the contents until it is actually released, since the previous releases have seen changes prior to the official release date.

Those are the worst Road Runner cartoons ever made. Casual buyers who don't know any better are going to be awfully disappointed with this DVD.
What they should have done instead is to release the rest of the pre-1964 Road Runner cartoons that haven't yet been released on DVD, plus the wolf-sheepdog and Bugs-Wile E. Coyote cartoons that haven't yet been released on DVD.

I've kinda gone on Looney Tunes sabbatical. We have drastically limited our TV viewing with a little in the house now, and while I want him to enjoy these cartoons like I did, I do want to wait till he can process the slapstick violence a little better.
I also wish there were releases that duplicated the way so many of us first saw these, in half-hour or hour blocks of random shorts on Saturday mornings or when Cartoon Network would play them a few years back. It gets tiresome watching more than one short of the same character right after another, it can get repetitive and you start to see the strings holding the whole mess up.
But let me say I find the work you're doing in this thread very impressive, and I'll be bookmarking it for future reference.

Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
So are the "Looney Tunes Super Stars" discs made up of entirely unissued material or are they mixed with toons that were in the Golden Collections? Are these replacing the Golden Collection line? Sorry if these are simple questions.

I'd like to know who this Amit Desai of WHV is, who keeps praising these releases as the greatest thing to come along since the invemtion of the wheel. Tried getting in touch with WHV to voice my opinions on them but nobody ever responds back. He's always in those press releases. Is this guy for real?

Warner has said that the reason they are re-releasing some shorts to DVD is for 'regular consumers" as well as to fund further restoration efforts.
And yes, the Super Stars line is considered the official successor to the Golden Collection line.

Thanks for the info KStublen. Never knew or even realized that. As long as thewre's no full double-dipping on the newer releases, I'm fine with that then.

Well, like I said, some of them there are and apparently will be. Tweety & Sylvester is comprised of nothing but double-dips.

I wonder if anyone can tell me the name of the two chipmunks/squirrels that were in Looney Tunes. They are not "Chip And Dale". I just remember these two little guys who were really polite to each other all the time, "After you" - "No, after you, I insist".
I just remember this one cartoon of the two of them being stuck in a tomato canning factory.
Anyone?

They're named are Mac and Tosh, but usually people just call them the Goofy Gophers. The short you're thinking of is called I Gopher You.

Here's a link to where you can get the Private Snafu release. It's sold by a third party, Thunderbean, but that's who actually produced the DVD release. It's a high quality release on a factory pressed DVD, not a DVR. Also comes with a four-sided color insert that includes an essay, photographs, and disc contents.

TVShowsonDVD.com just issued an article on some changes to the newest Looney Tunes Superstar releases and it's nowgoing to include those damn CGI shorts. MAn is WB scraping the bottom of the barrel here but watch Amit Desai praise this as being such a wonderful DVD set of cartoons like he always does...http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Bug...er-Stars/14987

Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
Here's the article:
I could care less about the CGI ones. There are still unreleased Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner shorts that they could have put on instead. Although, this is technically good news because while the 2010 crap from the initial announcement is replaced with more 2010 crap, the 1979 and 1980 shorts that no one cares about, are being replaced with 1965 shorts that actually matter. So if they had to change it, at least there was some positive in the change.
I am annoyed, however, that they're putting the CGI first, so if we hit "play all" we'll have to skip through the first three shorts. I'm pretty sure that was intentional on their part.
---
I'm still not going to list these shorts under the releases section or post that these shorts have been released on shorts section. The past Super Stars releases saw changes up until the week or two before release, so there's still plenty of time for this one to change.

At the time we gave you the full list of included cartoons, which we had copied-and-pasted from the studio-provided info.
Now Warner has informed retailers that 5 of the 15 previously-listed shorts won't be on the finalized product, but that five other cartoons would be included instead. Out are 1979's "Freeze Frame" and 1980's "Soup or Sonic" (both by Chuck Jones), as well as the three new 2010 webtoons: "Judge Granny Case", "Wild King Dumb" and "Wile E. Coyote Ugly". In place of those you'll instead get 1965's "Boulder Wham!" and 1965's "Hairied and Hurried" (both by Rudy Larriva), plus 3 shorts produced in 2010 using CGI animation: "Coyote Falls", "Fur of Flying" and "Rabid Rider". All other info seems to be unchanged, including the package art (shown again at bottom) and the pricing. 2. FUR OF FLYING (CGI)

Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
For anyone that wants to know, these are the Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner Shorts that have yet to be released to DVD. The ones Warner plans on releasing on the Super Stars DVD are in bold.
Hip Hip-Hurry! / Hot-Rod And Reel! / Wild About Hurry / Fastest With The Mostest / Hopalong Casualty / Zip 'n Snort / Licket-Splat / Beep Prepared / Zoom At The Top / War And Pieces / Rushing Roulette / Run, Run, Sweet Road Runner / Tired And Feathered / Boulder Wham! / Just Plane Beep / Hairied And Hurried / Highway Runnery / Chaser On The Rocks / Shot And Bothered / Out And Out Rout / The Solid Tin Coyote / Clippety Clobbered / Sugar And Spies
As you can see, that still lives 14 original Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner shorts unreleased on DVD. So instead of what really matters, the pre-1970 theatrical shorts, Warner is giving us 3 CGI shorts that no one cares about, 3 newer shorts that mostly no one cares about, and 9 shorts that we actually do care about. I just don't understand why Warner Bros. insists on doing things like this. At least with the Foghorn release it was a good release with stuff that hadn't yet been released to DVD, and it was full of shorts we cared about. This though, is just rubbish. I'll pick it up if I can find it for $5 since I don't have faith in Warner Bros. to release the shorts that do matter (the ones bolded above) in any other format or package.
Not to mention the the three remaining Bugs Bunny and Wile E. Coyote shorts: Rabbit's Feat / Compressed Hare / Hare-Breadth Hurry

Thanks for the info kstublen and manicsounds. This gets very confusing for me. Might have to pickup the Foghorn release as he is my favorite character and not well represented in the Golden Collections. My kids don't really care for him though.

If you're a Borders Rewards member, they might have it in stock at your location and you can get 40% off it as well this weekend only. There's a link to that coupon in the Bargains section for Borders. That's where I got my Foghorn DVD from.
