Swamp Thing?!? Answers PMed!

(Now I have only to rely on my newly developed uncanny ability to be picked by random selection at a rate slightly higher than chance alone)

Re: 2010 TV on DVD Challenge Discussion Thread

Anyone else out there keep up with Dexter? I'm currently halfway through Season 3 and it seems much slower (and like there is less plot going on). Not that I want to get into content (or spoilers) at all, but is Season 3 known as a weaker season? I've heard competing arguments.

On another note, I'm rewatching my first three seasons of Entourage and I forgot how much quick, mindless escapism there is in this show. I picked up 3-4 of the more recent seasons (which I haven't seen) from a recent (holidays?) Amazon sale.

I also have no idea where I left off on Californication, so I think that show is on hold for me until after the challenge is over.

Re: 2010 TV on DVD Challenge Discussion Thread

My sleep schedule is completely off, so I'm staying up late running in and out of the bathroom (stupid Crohn's) for the second straight night. Re-visiting The 4400 The Complete First Season, which I enjoyed in its original broadcast. I wish I'd kept up with the show during its run. Incidentally, add it to the informal list of recent era shows that actually has a full theme song--and for my money, the opening credits of this show was one of the best on TV. I loved the peculiar sound of the song ("A Place in Time"), and thought it was a clever montage showing the passage of time.

Paramount didn't put much effort into the DVD release, though: five episodes (including the double-length pilot) across two discs. I suppose they could have just made it a single flipper disc, but other than that this is as barebones as it gets. A shame, too, because with the talent behind the series (including two Deep Space Nine veterans) there was bound to be a worthwhile commentary track to be had.

The 4400 is a good show but although worthwhile I didn't think the later seasons kept up with the very high quality of that first season. There are commentaries in further releases.

I just notice the entire series is $30 on Amazon Marketplace, that is psychotic. I'm reminded of my problem when I suddenly want to purchase something I already own because it's a good deal (but I don't, that would be odd).

Of the first 4 seasons, I do think that Season 3 is the weakest one. Not only slower and less interesting, but Dexter doesn't seem to be himself and certain other characters are just over-the-top. Season 3 isn't terrible, but I found it to be the least satisfying one. Things get back on track with Season 4.

We were sporadic viewers of subsequent seasons (USA seemed to air this show during times of the year we were less likely to watch TV), but I saw enough to like the rest of the series. Even if it doesn't measure up to my hopes, I'm eager to explore the rest of it. $30 is awfully tempting, but we're hoping to go Thursday to the Louisville Science Center to see the just-opened Star Trek: The Exhbibition, and that'll set us back $36 just to walk through the door. That night is a Cincinnati Reds Winter Caravan stop at the Louisville Slugger Museum, and while it's free there's still parking to consider, plus we'll need to eat downtown.

Of course, if my guts choose to be uncooperative on Thursday, bets will be back on!

A note on the trivia questions: the third question is always specific to the prize being awarded.

Good to know. I just watched the episode from Season 3 titled "Easy as Pie" and I felt like things finally got back on track (at least somewhat). There are long stretches of the show that feel like they could be edited, so I'm certainly looking forward to a return to what was working in Season 1 and 2.

Thanks for giving your perspective. I agree that I don't think it's terrible, but it's certainly a step down from the first two seasons.

Telly's Matlock is going out this afternoon. Sorry it took so long; this was the first time I have ever shipped internationally--on that note, telly, let me know if you don't get it within say 2 weeks--that would probably mean I messed something up.

Congrats!

You should change the title to Swamp Thing: The Series, in your question.

Re: 2010 TV on DVD Challenge Discussion Thread

I finished the third season of The Mary Tyler Moore Show today and was surprised to see Craig T. Nelson have a bit part in the final episode of the season. One of the things I love about watching old shows is spotting people who go on to become bigger names just getting their start.

This snide little crap is not appreciated. I sent in answers to questions after I had won. This is my first challenge and I understand completely that you would make winners ineligible to allow others a chance, but commented that I wish this had been made more clear. I thought we had taken care of this privately. but some people can't let it go.

Relax, young feller, and check your guns at the bar (I've been seeing a lot of TV westerns for this challenge). It's only a game--and rules sometimes need to be repeated for the benefit of everybody. It's not all about you.

I watched the final season of Mary Tyler Moore and was surprised to see Helen Hunt as in early teen. It looks like she didn't age.

Yes, it's frightening. I'll see if I can get a screencap.

GoldenWheels: Matlock arrived this afternoon. That's some pretty fast shipping!

Perhaps not, but read this carefully and see if you don't see the snide remark here.

I think when MinLShaw said "folks" he meant it as "guys/people/everyone" and not as "That'sAllFolks."

That's how I read it. I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out. I thought the complaint was because there was just a note that past winners can't try to win again, which I didn't understand why anyone would get upset.

I'm glad you got it so fast but now I wonder how it got sent--I filled out the forms and basically said "no rush" to my guy as there was no slow option to avoid, just varying degrees of fast ones...you got it overnight! Nice!

I didn't include a catalog as we don't do business in Canada--someday maybe.

Re: 2010 TV on DVD Challenge Discussion Thread

Massive update/response post here, trying to cover everything at once.

Trivia Questions, Round Five
  1. The Dukes of Hazzard yielded two spin-off series. Name both of them.
    Spoiler:
    The Dukes and Enos
  2. Which James Bond hosted an episode of The Muppet Show?
    Spoiler:
Roger Moore hosted The Muppet Show "Episode 524." Pierce Brosnan later hosted "Episode 204" of Muppet Tonight.
  3. Where was Swamp Thing originally filmed?
    Spoiler:
The show originally filmed on location in Florida, and at Universal Studios Florida.

And the randomly selected winner as chosen by Math Goodies Random Number Generator is...

jmsmath! Congratulations!

Speaking of the prizes...

Please note: previous winners are ineligible to win another prize. Tryin' to spread the wealth here, folks.[/QUOTE]

As others have already noted, this was not meant at all to call attention to you or anyone else in particular. The "folks" was entirely unconscious on my part, and you're just going to have to take my word that I'm neither malevolent enough, nor pun-happy enough, to have inserted the word purely to take a jab at you. To wit, notice that I was also prompted to post the following trivia rule reminder:

I thought establishing the rules in the very beginning would be sufficient, and twice now in five rounds I've run into a problem with an omission in the wording. This hosting business is hard, y'all!

It hurts me to see Helen Hunt maligned like this. Oh, the things I used to want to do to/with/for her....

GoldenWheels: Matlock arrived this afternoon. That's some pretty fast shipping!
Shazam! That was fast! Rich has really gone above and beyond with these prizes, despite my best efforts to ruin it for everyone, and I hope even those who haven't won yet recognize the time and trouble (and cost) it's taken to dress up our little challenge with some respectable prizes.

As promised, Helen Hunt circa 1977. She looks exactly the same as she does today, or is it just me?

Re: 2010 TV on DVD Challenge Discussion Thread

I started watching The Black Adder on Netflix instant stream. A bunch of reviews recommended skipping the first season, which I enjoyed, but they all failed to explain that you really didn't need to watch the first season to enjoy the rest. The second season on, was basically a reboot of the series and is completely different than the first.

I still liked a lot of the first one since he was more of a Mr. Bean type character.
