I was saving Carpenter's Prince of Darkness for my birthday on the 10th but I'm not sure I'll still be able to. I actually planned to do the same thing last year but my all-region player broke down and all I have is the R2. It's one of the three Carpenter movies I haven't been able to finish the whole way through and from the first half hour I've seen, I loved it. It had the perfect tone to me and I was saving such a treasured ideal as unseen Carpenter for my birthday as a a treat.

Speaking of which, I feel stupid. I'm staying the night here at the hospital with my wife and I remembered to bring my laptop today since my wife has to sleep for the majority if the time. I figured I can finally update my list here on the site as well as work on my blog, both of which has been neglected for almost a week now. So here I am, ready to go and I realize: I left my notebook with my notes on every horror movie I've seen since July at home. So now I don't know what to do. I figure I'll go through and comment on the movies of the day that have already passes and I've seen before so at least I contribute some conversation even if I can't actually watch a movie.

Actually, maybe I'll give streaming a movie a shot. The idea is one I usually bristle at and I haven't had a good experience yet with it, but I've got nothing else going right now.

I thought I would actually have a lot more on my list this year, seeing as how I'm unemployed. As it turns out, all these things seem to be creeping up. I stayed at the beach over night last night, a surprise day trip. I'm going out of town next weekend for a concert (I may be unemployed, but the show is just $7), and then ... I have a job interview next week as well. I don't mind sacrificing some numbers if I get a good job out of it.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I just watched Dawn of the Dead: 2004 R rated version and think I like this version more than the directors cut. It's paced a bit better overall and is what I loved in theaters. The punch line to the "Down with the Sickness" montage is so much more effective(hilarious) in this version than the directors cut. The opening 10 minutes and credits sequence is just awesome and I had forgotten how effective it was. So it was nice to revisit the film again after not viewing it for years and almost thinking it was premature to praise it originally and that it'd not hold up to repeat viewings. But it's entertaining and quite a lot of fun.

To change things up then, I decided to view Child's Play since I hadn't seen that in years either and haven't gotten to the series in past challenges yet. It's easily the most effective of the series in terms of being a serious thriller with a tiny hint of dark humor, before the sequels really went to camp city. Depending on how I'm feeling, I might try to view all the sequels or at least Bride of Chucky. I don't recall liking parts 2 and 3 that much, and Seed was definitely the worst of them all. So it's still up in the air whether I'll view them or not. I recall Bride being a ton of fun though and working as a complete horror comedy.

Good luck, man. I've been in the same boat for a couple of months now.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Okay, now I'm confused. I've checked the MPAA website, filmratings.org, and they show The Evil Dead was rated NC-17 in 1994. There is no indication it was a re-rate. Evil Dead II, however, is listed as having been previously rated X in 1988 and edited for a re-rate of R. So my question is, did they just forget to include a note that The Evil Dead was originally rated X in 1981? I've temporarily changed it on my checklist to an NC-17 from an X, pending someone more knowledgeable than me on the topic clarifying this.

IMDB shows Evil Dead as having originally been rated X, so I'd guess you'd be OK to go either way.
However, in my opinion, I've had a harder time finding movies for this challenge that were rated NC-17 and decided to either edit it to an R or forego a rating (i.e. "unrated"), so you might be better off keeping it under NC-17.

I'm thinking about streaming Blood for Dracula as a Criterion Horror title anyway, and that was originally rated X, so I may just do that.

Didn't have a chance to watch anything today. Had to spend the day shooting political videos, I am sitting down now burning some DVDs to give to the campaign, and it's the first time I've sat down at home today. And I have more on Monday, so I might have some trouble making it to 100 without a marathon day or two somewhere before the end of the month.

I'm using the time in the morning between sending my son off to school and headin to work to knock out some of the shorter movies (anything less than 90mins) and man I've come across some pure trash.

Right now, I'm making my way thru 'Cheerleader Autopsy' and this may well be the first one to that doesn't get finished, but we'll see how I go. Obviously if it doesn't get watched I won't count it - fortunately it's only 75mins long.

It features Misty Mundae. Everything else is irrelevant.

EDIT: My bad. Wrong "Sick Girl" movie!

Show of hands: Who else is watching GHOULIES GO TO COLLEGE (1991) this year, as I just did?

Sounds awesome! I've never heard of that sequel, and don't think I've ever seen a single Ghoulies film. Been meaning to for years, and own a couple I think. Always sounded like a good marathon to me. There are 4 of them, right?

I've now seen all four of them. They're all terrible.

Loved your review Chuck, all your reviews actually. Wow, terrible is right. Thanks. My OCD will still compel me to buy the remainder of the series someday, I am now in no hurry to do so.

Well your OCD is going to flip out because you can only get 1,2 and 4 on DVD in Region 1. Part 3 is in some kind of rights negotiation hell.

Don't know if I'll get them all in, but this year I broke down and bought the Nightmare on Elm Street box set, the Friday the 13th box set, the deluxe versions of Friday the 13th 1 and 2, Jason Goes to Hell and Freddy vs Jason, as I was in the mood to revisit the movies I grew up with in the 80s. As for what movies am I saving for a certain date, I am considering waiting until the 13th before I put in any Friday the 13th movies.

Would have bothered me a year ago, but since then I've bought a $45 region-free player and discovered cheap international DVD buying.

I think I'm off on the 13th, so may try to marathon through all the Jason films that day. Started that project in the 2008 Challenge, but only watched the first two. Still never seen any of the others in whole.

Evil Dead has had more ratings than you can shake a stick at... spoilered for length.
Spoiler:

From IMDB: "USA:X (original rating)... USA:NC-17 (rated 1994)"

From Wikipedia: "When the film was re-submitted in the US for a rating in 1994 the MPAA classified it with an NC-17 rating. When the distribution company Elite Entertainment released the film on DVD in 1999 they retained the NC-17 version. Anchor Bay Entertainment has since acquired the DVD rights to the film, and their subsequent releases have surrendered the rating to allow them to release the film unrated."

The re-rating from X to NC-17 is because the MPAA discontinued official use of the 'X' rating in 1990.
From Wikipedia: "The last film rated X by the MPAA was the 1990 horror film sequel Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. On September 27, 1990, the MPAA introduced the rating NC-17 ("No Children Under 17 Admitted") as its official rating for adult-oriented films bearing the MPAA seal."

It's funny both the Masters of Horror episode and a seperate 2007 feature film are called 'Sick Girl' since that seems like an odd name. I was referring to the 2007 non-MoH feature in my original post. Maybe I should have pulled a 'Sick Girl' double feature. I will have to check out MoH one since I've never seen a Misty Mundae film (though I have appreciated the covers she graced).

The 2007 feature film is pretty gruesome in a torture porn kind of way I don't want to give away part of the "plot" (so have spoilered it) but there's nothing erotic about it.

Spoiler:
Highlight to read if you're sure you want "plot" points on the 2007 Eben McGarr helmed 'Sick Girl': The female main character cuts off a victim's penis attaches it to a spiked plank and screws another victim with it. The recipient then defecates on the floor.

Even though "Satan day" has already gone by, there's still several movies I've yet to go through that have "Devil" in the title. I think I'll save all those for a certain day.

Today might be my biggest, longest viewing-day of the month. I'm only averaging about a 5-minute break between movies so far.....Doh! Times up!

That is funny, I didn't even notice the director's name. And with that synopsis, I'm not sure I want to know any more about McGarr...

A rant:

Spoiler:

Regarding "torture porn" it's not my style but I sometimes wonder why film makers feel they need to push the envelope. Is it because we don't know what's scary anymore or can't suspend disbelief for supernatural horror? Sure gross-out is fun but suspense and atmosphere are also important. It doesn't take much skill to shock an audience with buckets of blood but it shows talent when there's a legendary enbodiment of that film the viewer takes home. It seems like these I can't think of a good recent domestic ghost film (ghosts being a subgenre that emphasizes subtlely). I can now appreciate giallo even more after seeing films that equate suspense with gore rather than character identification and subtle build-up. One of the things I've liked best about the horror genre is the black comedy and it's disappointing to see that reduced to random profanity in some cases. Hello Rob Zombie. Not everyone likes Blair Witch Project but I remember checking my backseat the whole way home after seeing it in an out of town theather because of it's creepiness.

...now I'm looking forward to my Saw marathon next week.

My wife and I enjoy watching her DVDs from time to time. They are pretty funny. I actually FF through most of the fake-sex parts to get to the corny plot. She is pretty cool for what she does.

MoH is a regular-type movie. But she still appears in her most famous attire (nude).

Come to think of it, my wife also likes Sasha Grey. Maybe we'll have a double feature with Sick Girl and Smash Cut. I'm not getting too personal here am I? Moving along...
