I have to admit that I like more specific checklists, though this year's SF challenge is the first time I've participated so I'll probably change my mind after a few more. I like looking at what people selected for different entries, especially when I'm stumped for what to watch. It's also nudges me to try something I wouldn't have otherwise. There's also more of a challenge to finishing it off. Finding a movie that starts with GHI is pretty trivial, but unearthing a movie from the 'parallel universe' sub-genre can take a bit of digging.

I totally agree that the checklist items shouldn't be too specific, and Trevor makes a good point about not going into too many nooks. Some of items are pretty limited in the SF Challenge (I'm having a hard time finding a non-Firefly/Serenity Space Western) but then there weren't a lot of people talking about it before hand and Peppers did give us a chance to comment. I'd like a mix of more and less specific entries so it would still be hard to complete, but not as hard as the 100 movie main goal.

That brings up an interesting point: should an entry that doesn't count as a 'movie' entry be allowed to count on the checklist? Of course people can do what they want, but I'd tend to say 'no'. I think the checklist rules should be the same as the regular list rules: (about) 90 minutes = one movie.

How about this:

Watch an anime movie (or 4 episodes of a sereis)
Watch theatrical shorts or (a movie).

As for Miyazaki, I can't believe I missed that one. I'm even saving Ponyo for next month. D'oh!

I was thinking the same thing, but Outland would probably qualify. (West World or Back to the Future III also came to mind as sci-fi Westerns, but they're not "space.")

I haven't participated in a challenge since the Academy Award one in the beginning of the year, but this one intrigues me. However I just recently got a new job and have very little time to do anything, so we'll see what I can do.

I'm thinking of doing a generic section that requires full length things and then, if I can think of enough, another section of more detailed items where any length counts.

So I went with a generic checklist because I'm incredibly lazy and I'm busy doing the sci-fi challenge, of course! Items marked - length doesn't matter mean that items of any length count. If it doesn't have that, you either need something full length or enough short items to count as an entry.

We'll see how this works out and change it for next year if needed. Any suggestions to the checklist before the challenge starts are always welcome.

I'm not sure what everyone else has planned but I'm starting off with some short toons followed by feature films, mostly Disney stuff I haven't seen. After that it's all special effects type stuff. Pretty much just going with whatever I'm in the mood for.

I'm still horribly disappointed I wasn't able to even participate in, much less host, the Historical challenge as I'd planned, and I've missed most of the Sci-Fi (though I intend to cram some stuff in for my own enjoyment in these last few days). Animation in August sounds good, and the chance to score some ThunderCats? Too cool for school!

Granted, some of them have animation in them, but they're still mostly live-action. But even without the CGI Characters, there's still some solely live-action titles in there. I didn't include Space Jam or Looney Tunes: Back In Action since the characters are pretty much carbon copies (appearance-wise) of their Shorts counterparts. Again, most are crappy, but it is what it is.

I actually think the Speed Racer movie should count as animation. Sure, the characters weren't animated, but everything else was just about as animated as it gets.

Question about counting entries:

I have lots of anime tapes that have multiple eps. of a series on them. Some have three eps., some have four, some have 5. One even has six (150 min.!) What I would like to do is count each tape with multiple eps. as a separate item, rather than count the eps. and try to separate them out and add them up. It'll all average out in the long run to 100 items. But it saves me a lot of effort if I count each tape as a separate item.

Is that okay?

With DVD sets, it's different because you sometimes get 7 eps. per disc, so I'd rather do the four eps.=1 item math there.

My personal opinion, if they are separate episodes, list them. Let's say there is one episode of the 5 episodes on one of the tapes that was amazing and you want to comment on it. If you just say "Anime Tape #4" it doesn't really mean a whole lot, but if you actually reference the episode(s) it seems more meaningful, and you could comment on that particular episode.

A few days ago I started making a list of some of the animated shows I thought would be fun to watch for this challenge. I slowly realized that I have a shitload of animated shows and I hardly ever watch anything animated! I think 80% of the animated shows I own are ones I watched when I was a kid and subconsciously I can't resist buying them when they are released. I.e. "Captain N is on DVD, oh my god, I used to LOVE that show on Saturday mornings!" Yet, I have hardly ever put any of those shows in the DVD player to actually watch.

I'm definitely looking forward to this challenge to catch-up / revisit many of these titles. The problem is that I have SO many, I won't even make a dent in them.... but it will be fun trying.

Here are some of the titles I'm looking forward to the most:

Bananaman (this will most likely be a HUGE letdown)

I hated Danger Mouse with a passion but sat through it just to watch Bananaman, which was the second half of the show.
