Please, I beat up handicapped children & kick puppies to feel better about my superiority. Its not like I make lengthy posts analyzing someone's brief comment (that others agree with) and then try sounding like a message board psychiatrist to feel better about one's superiority. That would be really pathetic.

But you say you have no clue why people go nuts when one of these announcements are made? I think it's a pretty simple concept that people don't want to pay high prices down the road for items they want.

Re: New Round of Criterion OOP Announcements
You just made my exact point. If it is just an issue of money you have had 2 sales where the titles on this OOP could have been had for $10 -15. If you are waiting because you do not want to spend more money in the end, why would you not buy the titles you supposively "really want" when they are at a lower price then they have ever been or ever will be? Plus they are "criterion" titles which have always had a reputation for going out of print anyway. I'm sorry if it isn't nice to say, but there are a lot of people that have a collector mentality just because of the "OOP" factor. Same reason there are people that literally buy every single Criterion.

Threads/posts alerting me to titles going out of print are great, as they give me a chance to try to find them before they disappear or get too expensive.
For me, it's nothing about resale, it's figuring out when to buy things.
Many favorite titles, not just Criterions, I wait on, prefering to buy things that may go OOP later, or may not go on sale often.

Re: New Round of Criterion OOP Announcements
Speaking for myself, and a lot of others I imagine, there are hundreds of Criterions that I want. Yes, their have been a few good sales the last year or so, but I couldn't afford to buy everything I wanted.

Re: New Round of Criterion OOP Announcements
Well, your a good man Trevor & I respect that mindset. I guess I'm just the weird one then, that when I see titles on my wish-list on sale at great prices like Criterions have been, I buy them all to take advantage of the low price at that moment. When those B&N sales happened, I literally bought every single movie on my wish-lists at the time. I don't see the point in waiting in hopes that they could have possible been cheaper than $10-$15.
I want pretty much all of them, but over the years have purchased very few, as sales were rare. The B&N sales last year were like crack, and I purchased 200 or so between the two sales. Yes, I maybe could have bought the other 200 I want, but I'm not rich, and pretty much over did it as it was. Plus to maximize my cheapness, I only bought a few a day due to coupon limitations. As it was, I pretty much maxed out my possible separate trips to the stores and coupon usage, I physically could not have bought many more at the coupon prices. I tried to pick up any that were OOP or rumored to be OOP soon. So this announcement gives me a chance to pay a little more than July's prices but get them before they disappear and get too pricey.

I calculated all that to be roughly $5,597.50 so it really shouldn't be too difficult to grab all those up in a month or so.

Re: New Round of Criterion OOP Announcements
For the combined July/November B&N Criterion sales, I picked up 18 DVDs and 6 sets. Here's what I bought and what I paid:
1. Blast of Silence $12.13
2. The Thief of Bagdad $13.49
3. The Complete Monterey Festival Box-Blu $28.86
4. Nikkatsu Noir (Eclipse) $28.10
5. Postwar Kurosawa (Eclipse) $23.10
6. Kenji Mizoguchi’s Fallen Women (Eclipse) - $20.66
7. Battle of Algiers $22.50
8. Last Year at Marienbad $13.49
9. My Dinner With Andre $13.49
10. High and Low $13.49
11. Short Cuts $8.93
12. Wings of Desire $13.49
13. Vampyr $18.80
14. The Carlos Saura Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse) $22.46
15. The Friends of Eddie Coyle $8.93
16. The Hit $12.10
17. Fiend Without A Face $13.49
18. Salo $13.49
19. Army of Shadows $13.49
20. Floating Weeds $13.49
21. Mishima $13.49
22. Danton $13.49
22. The Seventh Seal $12.10
23. The Last Emperor 4-Disc Box $22.50
24. Dodes'ka-Den $8.93
Altogether, this cost me $383.67. With the B1G1 sales Deep Discount had, plus price glitches at Amazon which let me buy some Criterions for around $10 apiece, I've managed to add over 100 Criterions and Eclipse sets to my collection.
It's doable if you pay attention here and at other bargain sites.

I don't think you're getting it... He as well as all of us are already aware of the B&N sale. Thats what we're waiting for to take advantage of to the fullest extent. Brizz's problem is that he doesnt have the time nor the funds to pick up the 100+ titles in his wishlist. That is why he must PRIORITIZE his picks. The priorities in the wishlist get shifted around when theres an OOP announcement.
Some posters in this thread are clueless on the concept on wishlists. When theres a sale like the B&N sale, people like me can't splurge on 20+ titles because we live on a tight budget and/or don't have the time to go to different stores with all the coupons. That is why we PRIORITIZE.
Word of the day: PRIORITIZE.

My point remains: you and Brizz need to learn to bargain hunt. And, yes, sometimes that involves going to different stores with coupons, although I found most deals online.
If so, then he should realize that he will be paying 50% of the prices he quoted, less if there are applicable coupons this time around.

Wow, this is a whole lot of angst over what was originally just a snarky little comment.
Personally, I'm off the hook this time around because I'm not particularly interested in anything on the pending OOP list. I was concerned some more Powell/Pressburger titles might be on it that I haven't gotten to, but I appear to be in luck.

All of us have wishlists--some of us work on them, whittling the list down a few discs at a time, so we don't get blindsided by sudden OOP announcements because we've been buying all along. As I pointed out, there have been Criterion deals from various sources for a long time, all of which I discovered by checking the Bargain forum here.

This was just Brizz's DVD wish list, I'm sure there are other things he wants as well. Just because you have a wish list doesn't mean you can knock off twenty or thirty titles every paycheck. It's a gradual thing that you have to keep chipping away at when you can. I don't see what's so hard about understanding the concept of prioritizing.

Just cut back on the lattes and you'll be fine, Brizz. I've decided to not pay rent in July or August, so that should help me complete my Criterion wishlist.

Even half off criterions cost money. so I can get twice as many as normal is good...it doesn't mean I can afford 120 of them...it means I can afford 10 or 15 if i'm lucky. hence the need to PRIORITIZE.

For those of you hoping Criterion will offer these titles at a larger discount on their website like with the last wave:

Re: New Round of Criterion OOP Announcements
incredibly, some people have not been able to buy every criterion release that they want to each month they are released for the last ten years. other people have only recently, or in the last few years even, been introduced to such films and have had to purchase older releases as they can, rarely in quantities or with a frequency that they would prefer. There are also other companies that release dvds and blu rays that sometimes may take precedence over a catalog release from criterion, so that further lengthens the wishlist and makes picking and choosing difficult.
Thus, when - completely unexpectedly - five titles you have long coveted but put off buying for various reasons and financial realities are announced to be going out of print in 2 weeks and you know the history of values increasing dramatically once they are gone from stores, it creates a sensation of anxiety and haste for consumers to rush to buy the films they want to own - for if they don't now, they may not get to later. It's really not that difficult a concept all around, but I understand that your comment has less to do with any actual lack of understanding than it does a need to post smug self-satisfied snark like this to feel better about your superiority.

You have it right here.
You didn't get what Joe Camel was saying. Even if you cut it down to 50% of the prices that Joe listed that's still nearly three grand. There is still a price to be paid when bargain hunting. Maybe that's not a lot to you but to some folks it is.
This was just Brizz's DVD wish list, I'm sure there are other things he wants as well. Just because you have a wish list doesn't mean you can knock off twenty or thirty titles every paycheck. Rififi is great. I've just always preferred Bob a little more. It has a coolness to it that makes me want to crawl inside the movie and live there.
