Finally decided to catalogue my DVDs, I'd been putting it off for the longest time, I wanted to get several key DVDs in place before I started. My list will be divided into several categories, the first of which I've just completed: The main alphabetical list. Took me several days to complete, 11 pages at 32 items per page = 352, but some of these are series (of which I counted each season as an item on the list) and compilation sets (of which I counted each separate/distinct movie in the compilation as an item).

Next category will be Science Fiction, then Fantasy/Adventure, then Horror, then Action, Drama, and finally Series. That way, if my wife & I are in the mood to watch an adventure movie, or a SciFi flick, I can turn to the respective section in my list instead of going through the whole frickin' list to find a movie to watch.

What a PITA to compile these lists! They'll be easy to maintain once I get the main body of it out of the way, but until then.......WRITERS CRAMP!


Do you catalogue yours? Alphabetically? I think the next major step will be to create an alphabetical list on my computer where I'll be able to insert new movies as I buy them and keep the list alphabetical. But that's not going to happen any time soon... -kd5-

I use DVDAficionado. I like that I can set up folders for the various categories.

Same here - also, like having the info on a web-based site rather than on my computer.

Just out of curiosity, is there any particular reason why you prefer to keep your DVD list(s) at an online site over having it on your computer? -kd5-

Why do you need it on your computer? If you wanted to find something, you could just look at your shelves. Having them cataloged online lets other people see how impressive your collection is. Plus, having access to it over an iphone, cell phone, etc. helps stop double/triple dips.

That said, I keep mine on DVDAF and a master list on Excel. Someday I hope to complete the webpage I've started to show 'em off without using a service like DVDAf.

Because if the internet is down or the site is undergoing maintenance, you can't access it. If the site shuts down, which has happened with other popular ones, you get the joy of redoing everything.

I use software so that I can pull it up on my computer and I can also export it online.

Easier said than done.

i don't think anyone on this forum would ever take the time to catalogue their DVD's with any type of online, offline cataloguing service, let alone discussing it in a thread or two or three...

You could use Excel instead of writing the lists out. Then you can sort however you want.

I've seen threads here where people have posted pictures of their DVD collections, are actually quite proud of what DVDs they have amassed, and enjoy talking about them here.

Cataloguing my DVDs is important to me because #1: If our house ever got broken into or a fire ever burned it to the ground, homeowners insurance will appreciate knowing what needs to be replaced, and #2: I want to be able to puruse a categorized listing of what movies I have as opposed to standing in front of my collection for 30 minutes (until I'm semi-catatonic) trying to decide what I want to watch that evening. Having it categorized means that if I'm in the mood to watch a SciFi movie or a Fantasy/Adventure movie, I can quickly browse those categories and decided what I want to watch.

I don't think it's anal to create a list of my DVDs and I don't think it's anal to want to discuss it at a DVD forum. -kd5-

My only exposure to Excel (several years ago) taught me very quickly to hate it. I've created tables using word processing apps which would admittedly be more of a PITA, maybe I'll take another crack at Excel after I get my masterlists created.

I catalog and continue to RE catalog all the time. I'm just a very bored person (currently unemployed) and will do it over and over again. I just recently did a spreadsheet on Google Docs on top of having it already on DVDaf and formerly on DVDSpot (RIP, )

I like DVD Profiler, but there's no way I'm paying 30 dollars for it. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find a code for it.

Heck, not only am I planning to list/catalog my DVDs, I'm currently working on listing/cataloging all the software and websites available to help list/catalog DVDs! I've been reading this site for a while, and finally registered today planning to post that when I finish it in the near future, to help anyone else who wonders what their current options are beyond the well-known DVD Aficionado and DVD Profiler (there are a ton more).

Kd5, the king of useless threads was mocking you for starting a thread without searching first.

We have dozens and dozens of threads about this topic.

Thousands of people use software and websites specifically designed to track DVD collections.

Some people write them out themselves or use excel or something, but if your collection gets large you'll save much time if you invest in one of the countless programs/websites dedicated to the task.

Welcome to the forum, and you'll go far by becoming familiar with this page.

Once you get used to it though Excel (or any decent spreadsheet program) is really easy to use/manipulate. Over the past 10+ years I've created a spreadsheet that has all my DVDs (+rentals/ratings), console games (+rentals/ratings) and boardgames. Using some of the spreadsheet functions I can automatically pull such data as total cost, #DVDs/genre, total watching time, movie release dates (broken down by decade), etc etc etc. It's really all just a matter of what formulas you know/can dig up and what data you enter. The one thing that might be better is some sort of database (mysql, postgress, or access) but frankly I don't have the time/motivation to learn that

Excel is the lazy man's database.

30 dollars is cheap for never having to pay for updates and have a page that list your collection.

You're fine. Scott and I were just teasing you. I think we're a pretty decent group here, lots of people taking on small roles and projects to make the overall site the best DVD place on the net.

Less name-calling and nastiness than most sites, we just bicker sometimes, like any family, and like to mess with the new people.
